Abstract
This report contains a description of my co-op experience at Benteler Tube Management GmbH. While
employed, I gained many necessary skills and professional knowledge that will undoubtedly prepare me
for the workforce. The main skills I have developed while working at Benteler Tube Management GmbH
include technical translation, technical editing, and market research. These, along with my assignments
allowed me to perform at my highest level during my employment with Benteler Tube Management
GmbH and taught me a lot about the professional workplace.
Working in a professional environment such as the one I worked in at Benteler Tube Management GmbH,
allowed me to work alongside industry professionals in a German speaking country to develop more skills
pertaining to my degree and future employment opportunities that until this co-op were not considered. I
was also able to practice my German language skills and develop them more during my time living in
Paderborn, Germany.
Benteler Tube Management Company Description
Benteler Stahl/Rohr, with its’ three business units Benteler Steel/Tube, Benteler Rothrist, and Benteler
Tube Management, develops and produces customized tubes for selected customer groups and
applications. The company’s particular strength is in lightweight construction, high-strength products,
and surface protection.
The business units Benteler Steel/Tube (which produces seamless hot-rolled and seamless cold-drawn
steel tubes) and Benteler Rothrist (which produces welded and welded drawn precision steel tubes) are
more than tube manufacturers – they are a strategic development partner with their customers. Alongside
these two divisions, Benteler Tube Management develops new product and business ideas based on tube
solutions and tube products and handles important overarching functions for both units, such as Central
Technical Development, Quality and Environmental Management, Purchasing, Marketing, and Human
Resources.
Benteler is globally active with 170 plants, locations, and warehouses in 38 countries. Benteler believes
that intensive communication with their business partners and quick decision making go hand in hand
with success. That is why they have offices and production facilities located close to their customers and
they support their customers as an expert development partner and dependable supplier.
Daily Tasks
Within my co-op, I dealt with appropriate tasks corresponding to the scope of the marketing department /
area at Benteler Tube Management GmbH. My work corresponded not only to market analysis but also
corporate communications and also included any other tasks deemed necessary within the department.
Tasks deemed necessary by superiors within the marketing department were completed in a timely
manner and submitted via e-mail or hard copy as requested. Upon completion of tasks, meetings in which
I presented the finished work were scheduled and the superior who commissioned the work or the
departments which it will affect were invited.
Tasks that I was required to complete included:
Competitor research
Creation of PowerPoint presentations
Database compilation
German-to-English and English-to-
German translations
Graphic design and layout work
Market and business climate research
Presentation of findings
SAP database organization
Technical editing
Technical translations
Benteler Tube Management GmbH has obligated me to maintain confidentiality of knowledge and / or
experiences that I may have gained through this employment and which use or notification of third parties
could damage the company or companies economically associated with it, during the period of my
employment and after I have left the company.
From the First to the Last Day
During the beginning of my co-op, the Marketing Department moved locations within the same plant. I
helped the department during the move by packing and labeling boxes. I do not believe the department
was ready for my arrival as I was not initially provided a computer or any tasks. Luckily, I was able to
begin my work with Benteler by assisting the department with this move. Once we were in the new
location, the real work began and with my own computer I could begin my assignments.
I had the opportunity to learn in every sub-department of the overall Marketing Department during my
time working in Paderborn. I did not have a specific supervisor assigned to me allowing me to work on
many projects. I worked for the market research, corporate communications, market analysis, and
corporate graphics sub-departments.
Market Research & Strategy
The main assignment that I completed while working in the Market Research and Strategy section of the
Marketing Department was a seamless steel tube market research assignment and corresponding
presentation. I researched Benteler Tube Management’s competitors to find information such as news
articles on topics like capacity increase. I then used this information to create an Excel spreadsheet
[Figure 1] containing information on our top 25 competitors.

Figure 1: Seamless Steel Tube Market Research Assignment Excel Spreadsheet
Typical questions that I researched to support this assignment included:
Announcement of capacity reduction in Europe
Announcements of capacity increase in Europe
Information about technological improvement in European production.
What has happened in the past regarding the seamless tube competitors?
What is the strategy of our competitors in Europe?
With the information from these inquiries I created a PowerPoint Presentation [Figure 2] which I
presented to the department during a monthly meeting. It was required for me to cover the basic technical
content but I was allowed creative freedom with design. This presentation focused mainly on:
2011 market conditions
Company information (markets served and important news)
My personal predictions for the future of the industry based on my research
Figure 2: Seamless Steel Tube Market Research Assignment PowerPoint Agenda
The second project that I worked on with the Market Research Sub-department was a shale gas market
research presentation. I began by conducting online research on the market position of shale gas and oil
drilling in Europe. I used questions such as these to guide my research:
What are shale gas and shale oil?
What are the environmental issues surrounding the process?
What is the current state of energy production and transportation in Europe?
Where are these resources located around the world?
I saved my sources for this project in Microsoft Word documents [Figure 3]. These documents contained
citation information such as the company producing it, date produced, and date found. I also took the
time to highlight all the important information within the article. This process and the idea behind the
collection of resources will be helpful for me during my next research project at Michigan Tech. I found
this idea of data collection quite helpful in locating sources and organizing my data.
Figure 3: Market Research on Shale Gas, Source Collection
Corporate Communications
Because corporate communications is what I found the most interest in during my time working in
Germany, I did more work within this department than any other. My main experiences in this
department were in working with PowerPoint Template Slides. With this project, I helped create
PowerPoint templates that would be made available to all of Benteler GmbH through a tool available
within PowerPoint. These slides will be used by all employees of Benteler GmbH in the Steel & Tube
division including:
Benteler Rothrist GmbH
Benteler Steel Tube GmbH
Benteler Tube Management GmbH
Figure 4: Slide Examples from Benteler Slideshow Templates
These templates were a compilation of slideshows about Benteler as a whole, sales data from the
company, and each plant within the division. Once I had compiled all the slides into one presentation,
copying them from one presentation to another, I then had to reformat them so they had the same
layout. After finishing with the designs, I saved them as both a .ppt (PowerPoint 2003 document) and a
.pptx (PowerPoint 2010 document) because many people in the company have different versions of the
Microsoft Office suite [Figure 4]. This project allowed me the chance to work with and create master
slides in PowerPoint. I have never worked with this tool set before so this provided me with a learning
experience, the outcome of which was a new skill set.
A master slide is beneficial in a presentation because you can propagate the general layout of the master
slide through all the slides used in the presentation. This can include background, character format (i.e.
size, font, etc.), date, slide number, and icons or logos. In this sense, it also allows modifying the layout
of the presentation much quicker than if you had modified it on a slide by slide.
Another experience that I had working in the Corporate Communications Sub-department was with
technical translations. I helped translate emails about the PowerPoint toolbox that was distributed to the
company from German into English. Since there are both English and German speakers workers at the
company and English is the international language, this was the easiest way to spread the message.
Market Analysis
With the Market Analysis Sub-department one of my main projects was to manage the Visit Report
Database in SAP. Along with another project regarding the creation of a database to store visit reports
created by Benteler employees, I also assisted the Market Analysis Sub-department in compiling
information related to these reports.
The information I was to compile included: the company’s name, the SAP number assigned to it, and the
city and country that it is located in. In this search, I used: the visit report database, the visit report
documents saved on our central file sharing space, and SAP [Figure 5].
Figure 5: SAP Database Used for Visit Reports
SAP AG is a German multinational software corporation that makes enterprise software to manage
business operations and customer relations. The company's best known software products are its
enterprise resource planning application and its enterprise data warehouse solution software (SAP
AG).
Corporate Graphics
I was also able to use my graphic design skills during my co-op by assisting the Corporate Graphics Sub-
department. I was allowed the opportunity to work alongside a representative from the Sales Department
to design the two panels shown here [Figure 6].
Figure 6: Corporate Presentation Posters
Through this project, I learned more about a specific product produced by Benteler Steel Tube and I was
able to showcase some of my design skills. This product was Zistaplex© Tubes. Outstanding bending
properties shown in these tubes are the secret to the success of Benteler’s precision steel tubes for special
applications.
I was given the opportunity to work on this project because the graphic designer in our department was
out of the office but also I had expressed interest in doing some design work previously. But after this
project, I was not given more design projects as the designer was back in the office.
Like any other client project, there were some changes suggested to me but they were simple and didn’t
take long to remedy. For this project, I worked with PowerPoint and Adobe Reader because the company
does not have access to programs like Photoshop which I am more comfortable with. But this project
pushed me out of my comfort zone a bit and allowed me to try something new.
My Co-Op as Viewed from a Humanities Student’s Perspective
The best part of this co-op experience for me was the access it gave me to learning about new cultures. I
learned a lot about German culture and language but I was also able to travel all over Europe while living
here. With the use of CouchSurfing.org I learned about the people who grew up or lived in these cities
that I visited making the overall experience even better.
At CouchSurfing.org, the vision is that of a “world where everyone can explore and create meaningful
connections with the people and places they encounter. Building meaningful connections across cultures
enables us to respond to differences with curiosity, appreciation and respect. The appreciation of
diversity spreads tolerance and creates a global community” (Our Mission).
At first, as one could assume, I was worried about CouchSurfing. I would be staying in the homes of
strangers and learning things about them, their food, their culture, etc. But what about the dangers of
staying with someone you don’t know? How can you really trust them when you know nearly nothing
about them? CouchSurfing answered this question again in their mission statement: “A number of
obstacles can inhibit people from feeling free to explore. These barriers include safety concerns, financial
means, or simply a lack of information. CouchSurfing addresses and removes such barriers to exploration
by providing tools and guidance for the explorer” (Our Mission).
The profiles created by users on the site give information on the person such as:
Friends on CouchSurfing
Groups they have joined
Information about the sleeping surface
they can offer
Most recent location visited
Most recent log-in time
Photos
Reviews written by people they have
surfed or traveled with
The most important thing about the profile on CouchSurfing, as agreed by members, is the review
system. It tells people if you are reliable and if others enjoyed their cultural exchange with you. It’s the
best way to find information on a person who you plan to stay with because you can say anything about
yourself but hearing the information from someone who has actually met you is far more
beneficial. Below are a few sections of my CouchSurfing profile [Figure 7] (Gabrielle Elser – Profile).
Figure 7: Sections of my personal CouchSurfing profile
The website gives great tips on what to do during your first experience as the site and community is based
on a trust system. The CouchSurfing team considers the security and happiness of the sites’ members to
be their highest priority. A foundation of trust and accountability within the community is what makes it
possible for people to feel comfortable meeting one another and exploring CouchSurfing experiences
(Your Safety).
These experiences are fueled by members’ imaginations, enthusiasm and desire to connect with one
another in order to explore, learn and grow. This raw energy is funneled into each aspect of the
CouchSurfing system, from surfing and hosting to activities and peer-to-peer sharing. The countries that I
visited using CouchSurfing.org included:
Belgium
Denmark
France
Germany
Poland
Spain
Switzerland
The Czech Republic
The Netherlands
The UK
Each country I visited has given me a new view on life and communication patterns through the
world. With each city that I visited in the country, my previous assumptions were shattered.
Upon my return to Michigan Tech in the spring 2013 semester, I hope to share the information that I
learned during these travels with my peers and professors through the university. I will be in contact with
the Scientific and Technical Communications Student Chapter about presenting in one of their STC
Speaker Series events during the spring semester.
The Economic Troubles Effecting Europe
All over the world economies are failing. I have experienced this first hand in Europe. Not only through
the price differences on common goods while traveling Europe, but also through the department that I
was working for during my co-op.
On Thanksgiving Thursday this year, there was a meeting held for the department where we were
informed that the department would be closing. Unlike in the U.S., people were not sent home
immediately. Europe has better labor laws it seems, but there was no final date set for this closing. The
company informed all employees within the department that if possible they would be relocated to
another department and if not, that’s the end of their employment with the company. This was a hard
truth to face as I have become close with each member and seeing them losing their employment right
before Christmas was quite difficult. I was fortunate enough to keep my position for the entirety of my
co-op but with the low morale of all employees, after Thanksgiving I did not have any work to do.
Being as resourceful as I am, I took this opportunity to begin researching Master’s Degree programs as
well as future internship opportunities in Germany or greater Europe. I am beginning to consider
pursuing another degree after finishing my Bachelor’s Degree at Michigan Tech. However, I need more
research to know if this is what I want to do with the next two years of my life. Of course, this second
degree all depends on funding opportunities. From the research I have completed so far, studying for my
Master’s Degree in Germany would be less expensive than in the U.S..
The End of My European Experience
This co-op experience was challenging for me. Being so far away from family and friends took its toll
on me, especially with the six hour time difference; however I know the work experience I gained will be
invaluable to me when looking for more permanent employment in the future.
Before coming to Germany to begin my co-op experience at Benteler Tube Management GmbH, I didn’t
know what to expect from working within the marketing department. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy the
work as the market analysis intern as much as I thought I would but perhaps it was the organization of the
department or the work that really affected that. I found many of the assignments that I worked on to be
quite boring and tedious but with this experience I have found that perhaps market analysis is just not the
right career for me. I enjoyed my time living, working, and traveling Europe however and would love to
come back, no matter what the work turns out to be.
Having the opportunity to travel and learn in each country that I visited was beneficial to me on many
different levels and will, no doubt, assist me in my studies. I learned more about international
communication and international technical communication through these travels then I ever could have in
a classroom.
World economies are failing left and right and this particular time may not be the best to look for a solid
employment opportunity especially after experiencing this first hand. I have begun researching for a
Master’s Degree while having free time at work but still need more research to be sure it is what I want to
do and where I want to pursue this degree.
The skills I learned through the aforementioned projects while working as the market analysis intern at
Benteler Tube Management GmbH will prove exceedingly useful with not only my courses at Michigan
Technological University but also future employment opportunities. I have improved my
communication skills in German and believe that these skills will assist me in finding employment in the
automotive industry where I hope to be employed in the future. I feel that working at Benteler Tube
Management GmbH, and learning from my colleagues was the best thing I could have done at this point
in my undergraduate studies and know that the communication, professional, and technical skills I have
gained from them will be useful skills to have in the future.

Essay Questions
How have your co-op assignments adequately prepared you to enter the industry you plan to
pursue upon graduation?
For me, I am undecided on which type of work I plan to do after graduation. I would like to work in the
automotive or marine industry but I haven’t decided if I want to work in technical writing, corporate
communications, marketing, or something completely different. This co-op experience, while providing
me with many opportunities to experience new cultures in Europe, also allowed me to discover some
things I would like to do more than others.
From the experiences I had working in Paderborn for Benteler Tube Management GmbH I have realized
that I would prefer to work in corporate communications than in market analysis. It just interests me
more. I learned a lot working here and the skills I gathered in all the departments I worked in can not only
be used in the work place but also in everyday life.
How can the MTU co-op program be improved to meet the demands of industry and our students?
The MTU co-op program has been a great way to go through this experience. I don't think that anything
needs to be changed on the school’s side of this co-op experience. In my opinion, having a more 'hands
off' approach with the exception of the progress reports is a great way to handle co-ops because it allows
the company to continue on with daily work without being distracted by their co-op students and constant
updates. By having a mid-way and a final evaluation by the supervisor rather than just having one at the
end really encourages people to look for changes and describe progress. The program is set up well for
both industry and students.
The program is perfect for a student. Personally, my advisor requested bi-weekly updates on what I had
completed and encouraged me to consider the implications of these items as well. I also enjoyed the
newsletter informing us co-op students of upcoming due dates though there was an issue with delivery as
positions changed. Michigan Tech’s co-op program handled this well though and gave extra time as the
newsletter should have been the reminder to send in mid-term reviews. The entire program seems to be
set up in the perfect way to benefit industry, students, and Michigan Tech.
Describe how your cooperative education has enhanced your understanding of professional and
ethical responsibility.
Working in a large professional organization such as Benteler Tube Management GmbH in both the U.S.
and Germany has given me the opportunity to truly experience professional and ethical responsibilities in
more than one culture over a long span of time. Benteler has high standards for the products they produce
and I have learned that to create quality products, there needs to be quality work leading up to it. This
quality is not only seen by the customer but also by the employees within the company who work hard to
make the products what they are as a final product.
Americans and Germans have different concepts of work ethic. American employers lay emphasis on
practical experience with the training on the job concept; contrary to Germany where your potential
employer focuses very much on education and qualification. Americans are more pragmatic and goal-
orientated than Germans. For example, German business and academic meetings are longer than the
American equivalent. While German businessmen tend to discuss all topics in detail to make sure
everything is settled and agreed on, their American counterparts concentrate on getting a positive result as
quickly as possible without paying much attention to minor issues.
Finding your work is different in Germany but keeping the position tends to be the same. Everyone
works hard to complete a task. Seeing the pride each employee within the company has for the products
shows me just how professional the people I have worked with are. Everyone who I have had contact
with at the company works their hardest to ensure they are doing the best job they possibly can. Benteler
Tube Management’s policies and the culturally engrained work ethic of the Germans I worked with have
showed me how important integrity, ethics, beliefs, and professionalism are in every line of work..
Describe how your cooperative education influenced your ability to identify, formulate, and solve
problems.
I have had the opportunity as a Michigan Tech student to complete many projects within groups or
individually and those assignments have helped me to complete the assignments I received while on my
co-op. For the projects that I worked on while in Germany, I took the same approach for nearly each
item. I began each assignment by sitting down with the person who wanted it completed to discuss what
they saw as a final product and to clear up any questions or assumptions that I had about it. From there I
had freedom to decide which steps to take and in what order, by trial and error I found the best way to
finish each assignment. With all of the practice in solving problems that I have received working at
Benteler Tube Management, I am better at it. With some assignments, I had to be quite creative to solve a
problem that I was facing and now I know that I need to think a bit more critically when solving
problems, while still considering options “outside the box.”
Describe how your co-op experience exposed you to the use of techniques, skills, and modern tools
necessary for your career. Which of these items were you exposed to at MTU, and which were you
only exposed through your co-op experience?
During my time working at Benteler Tube Management GmbH, I was assigned many projects that I really
didn’t know where to start with; they really put me outside my comfort zone. But because I didn’t know
these things, it forced me to learn them and expanded my knowledge base. Of course the language
difference that I experienced while working in Germany will be beneficial to me and my minor degree
and during the first few weeks living in Germany I felt like totally giving up because I had no idea where
to even start but now I can say that my language skills have improved. I am glad that I had the
opportunity to learn these things at Benteler while living in Germany and I hope I have the chance to use
them again in both my classes and in future employment opportunities.
How has your co-op experience helped you to develop social, team building, and written and oral
communication skills?
At Michigan Tech, I have learned to work well in teams through many of my courses but this co-op
experience has also given me more practical practice working in groups on professional
projects. Working here has not only solidified the skills learned at Michigan Tech but it also taught me
new skills perhaps specific to the German culture and work world. Working on such a large team, and
with other departments really gives a co-op student experience working with many different
people. Many of the projects that I worked on were given to me individually and were completed alone
but in the end the whole department was involved in the process.
Would you recommend cooperative education to a sophomore student? Why or why not?
I would recommend a co-op to a sophomore student at Michigan Tech because it gives students a chance
to see industry, and more specifically their chosen field in action. It allows a student to make a decision
as to if they really wish to pursue their field of study based on what it is actually like in industry. As a
sophomore, it’s not too late to change your field of study and so I think that is the best time to take on the
challenge of a co-op. Cooperative education also allows students the opportunity to experience working
in a professional atmosphere and gives them a glimpse of the inner workings of industry without being
expected to know how to act from the start. Cooperative education has been a fantastic experience for me
and has allowed me to look further into my major and the diverse fields I could work in. I have gained
real world experience that any employer would be happy to see on my resume before even considering
hiring me for a position.
