These style guides are standards that are designed for writing documents that are used for publication, organizations, and specific fields. The purpose of style guides is to provide uniformity on the style and formatting of a document. This web-based tool provides students and researchers assistance in citing their resources. Click to proceed to the next slideSon of Citation Machine Home PageHere is a screen shot of the Son of Citation Machine Home Page. Across the top of the homepage is one ad in a banner format that changes with each page.Underneath this area are the flags of Spain, Portugal, France and Germany. When you click on these , a window opens up to the Google translator to translate the page into the language you choose. Unfortunately, the Google translator does not work. Next to the flags are tabs that provide information about the software, Instructions, a link to a Face book page, a link to a Blog, and a Disclaimer and privacy policy.The middle of the page is where you input information in entered into a web form, or find out more information. The center of this page changes with each tab you choose.

The bottom of page does not change and the following information is given: Serving High School, College, and University students, their teachers, and independent researchers since 2000. This online tool was originally created by David Warlick of The Landmark Project on October 29, 2000 and is part of the Landmarks for Schools Web site for teachers. Copy right 2000-2010.

Click to proceed to the next slideEach tab has information about the web-based citation tool.The Home page tab gives you option to put in ISBN of material and choose either MLA or APA style.The Instructions tab give you step by step directions on how to choose the style, enter the information, and then paste it to your document. The Facebook page takes you to David Warlicks Facebook page. It comments that he has a Citation Machine blog and provides the address. The blog is also a tab on the website homepage and it gives you information about the development of the site. To get back from the blog and Facebook, you need to click the back arrow.The Disclaimer and privacy policy tab gives address and email information. The web page states that cookies are used to store visitors preferences, but no information is collected on users, including the domain and email address.

Directions: Click the citation style you want to use. Choose from MLA, APA, Turbaian, Chicago. Click the type of resource you are using (journal, book, Web site, etc). Complete the web form that appears. You can have material that has up to 8 authors. Click the Make a citation button to produce the bibliographic and in-text citation. Highlight the citation, copy and paste it into your document.

This web site not have assistive technology and failed the automated verification Web content accessibility report, provided by the Cynthia Says website. It did pass the 508 Standards, Section 1194.22, (m) that states when a web page requires that an applet, plug-in or other application be present on the client system to interpret page content, the page must provide a link to a plug-in or applet that complies with 1194.21(a) through (l).

The Son of Citation Machine can be used by students, researchers, teachers, and school districts. It can be used by students and researchers to check their work. Students can compare how resources are cited differently by each style. Teachers can teach about the various citation styles and hold students accountable for checking their own references.

Because the site links to the producers Facebook page, I do not know if a school districts filters would prohibit the link. Pros: The directions are easy to follow and there is a choice of 4 common citation styles. It is quick to produce the bibliographic and citation information, once you enter the information. The citation formats are easy to transfer to your document. The tool is free and does not require a subscription. Therefore, the site does not acquire your private information.

Cons: There are ads on the top and right side of the page that constantly change. The background on directions is a pale yellow color behind red text, making it difficult to read. This may not be readable for color-blinded readers. Some of the text is in a grey color, also making it difficult to read. In addition, you need to enable cookies so this site works correctly.

Click to proceed to the next slideConclusionToday, we have looked at the features, usability, and how the Son of Citation Machine might be used in education. Also discussed were the pros and cons of the web site.In conclusion, the Son of Citation provides users with an uncomplicated way to produce bibliographic and citation information. Although the ads may be distracting, the tool is useful and reliable. The author does put the disclaimer that There are usually many variations of in-text citations and one needs to consult the style guide for clarification (Son of Citation, 2010) . So, in the end, the responsibility rests with the author of the paper.With that in mind, I feel this is a useful web-based citation tool.
