Membership Spotlight … Alyssa Fry In the grand scheme of things, I am relatively new to the world of construction. I had previously been in nursing for five years, when I was offered a job at my stepfather’s company, Tom Herrman Masonry, last October. Talk about a whole new world! Since then, my mother Lisa has opened Central Plains Stucco, and I am currently doing office administration work for both companies, with special attention to the estimating and human resources aspects. Although the construction industry is new to me, it has definitely been a part of her genes. My grandfather was a general contractor, and her uncle an electrician. My mother has been involved in construction for many years, including real estate, office management, and now owning her own stucco business. I joined NAWIC because it seems like a great way to learn more about the industry from women who may have started out just like me. As it is still pretty new to me, I need all the help I can get! There are already so many different opportunities that I’ve found out about through the organization and I’ve only been a member for a month! I married my husband, Scott, last Labor Day after dating for seven years. He also works in masonry. We are looking forward to starting a family in the not so far distant future. We recently purchased our first home in north Wichita, where we live with their pets, Wrex and Fat Cat.

When I’m not working at Central Plains Stucco or Tom Herrman Masonry, you can find me curled up and zoned into a good book. I also love to get together to craft with my girlfriends. Lake season is almost here though, so I will be soaking up the sun with my family and friends as much as possible the next few months! I can’t wait to see where this new adventure will take me in the coming years! Welcome to the chapter, Alyssa! We are glad that you joined!

Membership Spotlight … Connie Ellingsworth I grew up in the Seattle area and moved to Kansas because my dad said he would pay for college! After graduating from WSU with a degree in accounting, I worked for 14 years as a Financial and Operations Principal with a stock brokerage firm. After leaving there, I took a couple of years off and spent a good deal of that time helping my brother set up his accounting system for his flooring business in Ozark, Missouri. Then Bob Simpson called me and said that I had been recommended to him from a mutual friend. I interviewed with Bob and was hired in September 2004. In 2005, I took over as the Finance Director and have been here ever since. I am a single mother by choice and waited a long time to have my son Alex at the age of 42! It is scary to think about how old I will be when he graduates. He is the light of my life and I cannot imagine life without him. He just turned four. For fun, I like to golf with my girlfriends. We play on the Business Women's Golf League at WSU. I don't play enough to be very good and I don't find time to practice, but I like to get out with my friends. Mostly I just like to hang out with Alex, putter around the yard with him, Finnegan, our cat, and Pipsqueek, our new puppy. We ride bikes and lately have been playing a lot of Super Hero games in the yard. I like to read, bake and do Sudoku puzzles. Connie, we are all happy to have you as a part of our NAWIC chapter!

Forum Report SUE GLEASON, PRESIDENT, CHAPTER #120

Linda Geesaman, Rhonda Richardson, Bev Sauerwein, Linda Walton and I attended the 2012 Annual Forum held April 20-21, 2012 at St. Charles, Mo. We had a great trip up and arrived in time for the tour of Panera’s Office

Remodel. On Friday, April 21st I attended the President’s Luncheon. Chapter presidents gave a recap of their Chapter activities to date. Director Leipard gave a report of the National Mid Year Board Meeting, reporting that the dues increase for 2012-2013 passed. At 1:00 p.m. Director Leopard called the general session to order. The credentials report was presented with 36 members, 2 National Board Members, and 1 guest present. Sandra Carter gave the welcome to Forum and introduced Karen Fraser, from the St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau, who welcomed us to St. Charles. Bev Sauerwein was elected to serve as Director of Region 6 for the term of 2012 – 2014. She will be installed at the National Convention in

Denver this year. Sandra Carter presented our hands on project. Everyone was given wooden kits to build stools, tool boxes, and keepsake boxes. After working on the kits she explained that each Chapter would take their projects back to their chapters, decorate them and return them to APC this fall. They will be raffled off. Receipts from the stools will go to the NEF Foundation and receipts from the tool boxes and keepsake boxes will go the Directors Fund. Director Leipard reviewed the strategic plan we developed at Forum, 2011. We discussed the goals and decided to leave them as is (a copy is attached). We then had some free time and joined other members to investigate Main Street, St. Charles and had dinner at Lewis & Clark’s. After dinner we went to the Casino, quickly donated our money, and spent the rest of the evening in the hospitality room. Saturday, April 21st the general session was convened at 9:00 a.m. We listened to a great speaker, Tom Evers, MO-DOT Engineer from St. Charles County who spoke to us on the bridge repairs on the bridges over the Missouri River and the over the Mississippi River. Melanie Mitchel also gave a very interesting presentation on “Virtual Design In Construction” and how it’s development has affected our industry. After Lunch, Director Leipard gave a presentation on “Making Connections” with ideas on networking and making it work for “YOU”. Candidates for National Offices were presented and allowed to speak. Dove Sifers-Putman, current National Secretary is running for the office of secretary again and spoke to us about her qualifications. Director Leipard then spoke to us, explaining why

May 2012 Issue Page 7

Forum Report SUE GLEASON, PRESIDENT, CHAPTER #120 (continued from page 6) she is running for National Treasurer and asking for our support. Kimberly Staats read candidate statements from other candi-dates unable to attend. A discussion followed with an urge for everyone to vote. Region Six has a low voter rate and we need to change this. This year we have some strong candi-dates running for office (namely our own Di-rector Connie Leipard). Your vote is your op-portunity to affect the direction you want NA-WIC to go. So voice your opinion – VOTE. Following the afternoon session, we walked through the Home Builders Show being held in the convention center. The Awards Banquet opened at 6:30 p.m. We enjoyed a good meal and then awards were presented. Ladies “WICHITA ROCKS”. Our Chapter won 1st place for the Construction Industry Community Benefit Award for our work with The Lords Diner and we won the 2011-2012 WICK WEEK award for the “Best Public Relations Event”. Linda Walton crowned the evening as she was presented the most prestigious award that NAWIC can convey to a member, she was named the 2011-2012 WIC of the Year.

Membership Spotlight … Andrea Cole In May of 2010 I graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelors of Business Admini- stration with emphasis in Finance. Immediately following graduation, I began working for Lockton Companies, LLC in Kansas City in their Associate Account Manager Training Program. This training program is designed to give recent college graduates the tools and knowledge to become successful insurance consulting professionals. In June of 2011, I chose to take my insurance career towards the construction sector and joined a permanent team within Lockton’s construction group. I am currently working on additional educational designations specific to the insurance field. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my Golden Retriever, Raleigh. We spend many Saturday mornings at the lake with Raleigh; he is an avid swimmer. I also enjoy giving my time to community service groups such as Special Olympics, Harvesters, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. One thing many people might not know about me is that I am a huge hockey fan. I grew up playing hockey and decided to retire my stick and gloves when I went to college. Since there isn’t much hockey in Kansas City, I was very happy when the Missouri Mavericks established a home here. I hope to get more involved with youth hockey by coaching this fall. Membership Spotlight … Jaymie Rothrock Hi, my name is Jaymie Rothrock and I am very excited to be joining the Greater Wichita Chapter of NAWIC! I wanted to get involved in NAWIC because I love what the association stands for—creating an environment where women in all phases of the construction industry can come together to further our individual success. I am a CPA and Senior Accountant at Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk and Loyd, LLC and I specialize in performing audits, reviews, and compilations for construction companies. I also provide tax preparation services and general business consulting services to companies in the construction industry as well other commercial businesses. SJHL has offices in McPherson and Hutchinson, and I personally have clients located all over Wichita. I am a Colorado native, but came to Kansas to attend McPherson College. After graduation, my husband and I moved to Colorado and I worked for a public accounting firm in Denver that specialized in the construction industry. After nearly five years of focusing solely on our careers, my husband and I decided we were ready to spend a little less time in the office and a little more time growing our family. We moved back to McPherson in July of 2010 and welcomed our first child, Brielle, to our family this last September. While Brielle and her big “sister” Emma (a 5 year old basset

hound) keep me quite busy, there is always time for a few other activities. In addition to participating in our church, I am involved in Relay for Life of McPherson County and was recently elected to the executive board of the McPherson Chamber of Commerce. Also, in my spare time I enjoy being outside. Whether its projects at home like landscaping or building a deck, to fun activities like playing in the yard with the dog or spending time at our family cabin near Pikes Peak, you can always find me out soaking up the sun.

It’s great to have you as a member Jaymie!!!

Membership Spotlight … Andrea Cole (continued from page 7) My interest in NAWIC began when I was introduced to Lori Payne of Andale Ready Mix Central. Lori encouraged me to attend a NAWIC event as a guest in December of 2011. I had a great time at my first event and could see the many opportunities being a part of NAWIC could bring to me. I’m very excited to get even more involved with NAWIC and continue to grow the relationships that I’ve started to build with the women of NAWIC of Wichita. And we’re excited to have you as a member!!

2012 Forum Report LINDA WALTON, CIT Forum was great! Sue Gleason, Rhonda Richardson, Bev Sauerwein, Linda Geesaman and I headed for St. Charles, MO Thursday morning. The trip provided the opportunity to do some NAWIC strategizing and to catch up with each other. First on the agenda of Forum activities was a job tour of Panera Bread (aka St. Louis Bakery —they’ve kept their original name in St. Louis) Headquarters. It was interesting to hear about the project. Connie Leipard, CIT, Region 6 Director called the meeting to order on Friday. Stephanie San Paulo, CIT sang the National Anthem (what a beautiful voice she has!), and Karen Fraser from St. Charles Convention & Visitors Bureau welcomed us to the area. Forum business was conducted, including the election of Bev Sauerwein as NAWIC Region 6 Director!! (woo hoo Bev — you’re going to do a great job!!!) We did a hands on project and built some wood projects for chapters to take home and decorate. The finished products will be raffled at APC as a fundraiser for NEF and the Directors Fund. Friday night a group of us went to the historical district of St. Charles and visited the shops and had dinner. It’s always great to catch up with members throughout the region. Stephanie San Paolo started our Saturday morning by leading us in our morning stretch. Our first speaker of the day was Tom Evers, an Engineer with Missouri Department of Transportation. He talked to us about us two large bridge projects — the I-70 Blanchette Bridge Rehab and the new 1-70 Bridge over the Mississippi River. The first project is a $60.5 million rehabilitation of a bridge over the Missouri River that was built in the mid 1950s. The bridge has about 72,000 vehicles travel on it daily. The second project is the construction of a new bridge over the Mississippi River. It is a joint project between

the Missouri DOT and Illinois DOT. The new bridge is a 1,500 ft. cable-stayed bridge. The total project (including new approaches, etc.) is a valued at $667 million. It is expected to be finished in 2014, and the bridge will be maintained by Illinois DOT. It was interesting to hear about the projects. Melanie Mitchell, a former NAWIC member, spoke about Virtual Design in Construction. She led us through the evolution of drawings from cave drawings to the current use of BIM. Quite the evolution there! Wonder how it’ll be done 50 years from now?? Connie Leipard, CIT, Region 6 Director presented “Making Connections” and discussed the importance of networking and connections. Tips she gave on making connections included: connect to make a difference, be adaptable, be interesting by being interested, watch your body language, be a conference commando, and be a high quality connector. The day concluded with region business and discussion on national candidates. The Awards Banquet was Saturday and what a special night it was! The chapter won an award for Construction Industry and WIC Week, Bev had been elected Director, and I was given the WIC Member Award. What an honor! I was surprised … not sure why it was awarded to me, but it is something I’ll always remember and cherish. A big thank you to the chapter for nominating me!! THANK YOU!! I had never seen the Arch in St. Louis, so we made a quick trip by it. Thank you Bev! It was a great trip and a great Forum! I encourage each one of you to attend a Regional Event!
