For two millennia, the church has gathered throughout the week leading into Easter

Sunday (Holy Week) and it is no surprise that music has come to play a large role in

the celebration of the events of that week. At the heart of this time is the remembrance

(the making real once again in this time) of one of the most profound events in human

history: Christ’s crucifixion, death and resurrection. This concert takes us on a journey

through this remarkable time, reflecting on the significant events of that week and

celebrating with all the world This Joyful Eastertide…

The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle

Christ Church Cathedral maintains a music programme that has benefitted this city

for nearly 200 years – the first record of music at the Cathedral dating back to 1835

when a finger and barrel organ was in use. During that time, the choirs, organists

and musicians have enhanced the worship of our church, diocese and city, and

provided entertainment on the concert platform in one of Australia’s finest and

most historic buildings.

The full and active music programme includes two choirs, Christ Church Camerata,

a concert series and Friends of Newcastle Cathedral Music. The Cathedral

Choir forms the basis of the choral programme. Their repertoire spans ancient

plainsong to the present day, and includes a number of anthems, canticles and

settings by local composers. In addition to this, the choir regularly sings major

settings by Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria, Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, Widor and Vierne,

as well as the “traditional” English repertoire of Darke, Sumsion, Stanford, Howells

and others.

Peter Guy, Organist and Masters of Choristers

Peter Guy is Organist and Master of the Choristers at Christ Church Cathedral,

Newcastle. An honours graduate and University Medallist of the University of

Newcastle (where he studied pipe organ and conducting with Dr Philip Matthias),

Peter has a strong association with the musical life of Newcastle. Prior to this,

Peter was Director of Music at St Stephen’s Uniting Church, Macquarie St, and

St Andrew’s College within the University of Sydney.

Peter was a national keyboard finalist in the Symphony Australia Young Performer’s

Award in 2003, performing with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. He has

undertaken international tours with the University of Newcastle Chamber Choir,

has performed as part of the national conferences of the Organ Historical Society

in the United States, and in 2016 directed the inaugural international tour of Christ

Church Cathedral Choir. Peter has recorded two solo organ compilations, directed

Christ Church Cathedral Choir in recording and enjoys an active recital schedule

around Australia.

Joshua 24: 16 – 33

The first lesson is taken from the book of Joshua, Chapter 24, beginning at the

sixteenth verse.

Then the people answered, ‘Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to

serve other gods; for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up

from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs

in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the

peoples through whom we passed; and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples,

the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is

our God.’

But Joshua said to the people, ‘You cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He

is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake

the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume

you, after having done you good.’ And the people said to Joshua, ‘No, we will serve

the Lord!’ Then Joshua said to the people, ‘You are witnesses against yourselves

that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.’ And they said, ‘We are witnesses.’

He said, ‘Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your

hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.’ The people said to Joshua, ‘The Lord our God

we will serve, and him we will obey.’ So Joshua made a covenant with the people

that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.

Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large

stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the Lord. Joshua said

to all the people, ‘See, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all

the words of the Lord that he spoke to us; therefore it shall be a witness against

you, if you deal falsely with your God.’ So Joshua sent the people away to their

inheritances.

After these things Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being

one hundred and ten years old. They buried him in his own inheritance at

Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who

outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel.

The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried

at Shechem, in the portion of ground that Jacob had bought from the children of

Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of money; it became an

inheritance of the descendants of Joseph. Eleazar son of Aaron died; and they

buried him at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which had been given him in

the hill country of Ephraim.

Acts 12: 1 – 17a

The second lesson is taken from the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 12,

beginning at the first verse.

About that time, King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the

church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw

that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the

festival of Unleavened Bread.) When he had seized him, he put him in prison and

handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him

out to the people after the Passover.

While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him.

The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two

chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were

keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a

light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get

up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him, “Fasten

your belt and put on your sandals.” He did so. Then he said to him, “Wrap your

cloak around you and follow me.”

Peter went out and followed him; he did not realise that what was happening with

the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. After they had

passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into

the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked

along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and

said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the

hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

As soon as he realised this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John

whose other name was Mark, where many had gathered and were praying.

When he knocked at the outer gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer. On

recognizing Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of opening the gate,

she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate. They said to her,

“You are out of your mind!” But she insisted that it was so. They said, “It is his

angel.” Meanwhile Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the gate,

they saw him and were amazed. He motioned to them with his hand to be silent,

and described for them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison.

Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before thee all those who are poor

the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to

heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant

this, Father, for the love of thy Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our

O God, heavenly Father, who by thy Son Jesus Christ hast promised to all those who

us, we entreat thee, in this time of need, such moderate rain and showers, that we
