The Perth East Fire Department invites you to participate in "Building a Farm Fire Safe Community" (FFSC). The FFSC Program was created to address the growing concern regarding farm-related fires. Barn/shed, agricultural vehicle and other farm-related fires have led to staggering losses (over $8 million between 2010-2014 in Perth East). Fires have destroyed buildings, livestock, vehicles, equipment and often cripple the livelihood of farming families. In Ontario alone, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) reports farm structure losses of $25 million-$60 million each year (this does not include contents such as equipment and livestock). The FFSC Program is founded on education, awareness and farm fire safety planning within the Perth East and West Perth fire areas.

The FFSC Program is made possible by our Partners in Farm Fire Safety: • Tradition Mutual Insurance Company • North Waterloo Farmers Mutual Insurance Company • South Easthope Mutual Insurance Company • Perth-Huron Insurance Brokers Association

Each farm is unique, which means each farm should have a unique farm fire safety plan. We've made it quick & easy for farm owners/operators to qualify for a custom-made fire safety plan for their farm. Simply complete the Self-Assessment Form and send it electronically, (or print and submit it) to the Fire Department. Once we've reviewed your completed form, we'll contact you and schedule a visit to the farm property. From there, we'll work with you, your family, employees and the property itself to create a farm fire safety plan.

ON THE ICE AT PERC

PRE-AUTHORIZED PAYMENT (PAP) PROGRAM

• IT’S SIMPLE - One of the simplest ways to pay your property taxes and water bills is through a pre-authorized payment plan. Both taxes and water can be set up to be deducted from your bank account on the due dates. Property taxes can also be set up for a monthly deduction.

• THE PLAN - The monthly plan, when started in January, will deduct 10 equal instalments from your bank account on the 15th of the month. This amount is determined by taking the previous year’s taxes and dividing them by 10. The November deduction is the balance between the previous year’s taxes and current year’s taxes. You can start this plan at any time of the year and we would simply adjust the payments by however many months are remaining.

• MAKING IT HAPPEN -You need to complete the application, attach a void cheque, and return to the office via mail, fax (519)595-2801 or email to [email protected] .

PURCHASING A FARM?

Check with OMAFRA before you purchase a farm to be sure the property is in the correct tax class, please call 1-800-469-2285. When a property is sold, it will become 100% residential. The farmland assessment class is very important and can mean the difference of thousands of dollars on a tax notice. The Township must bill out according to the assessment information sent to them and getting it changed after the deadline has passed is not always possible. MAILING ADDRESS REMINDER

Please notify the Township with your correct address. Canada Post has returned mail with incomplete addresses.

Building Permits

#Build2Code

Planning to build or complete renovations to your home, business or farm building? Building Permits are required to ensure that zoning requirements, fire and structural safety standards as well as other building standards are met, primarily for safety reasons. Whether you do the work yourself or hire a contractor, it is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure that a Building Permit is obtained, when required, and that the required

inspections are called for and any infractions are corrected. Starting construction without a permit is illegal and is a Provincial Offence under the Ontario Building Code Act. We advise property owners to ensure that the permit has been issued prior to any work commencing.

Building a Deck or Detached Garage The Perth East Building Department has introduced a Deck and Garage construction package to assist homeowners who would like to provide their own drawings for their projects. These packages outline the documents required to obtain a Building Permit and include sample drawings for reference. Also included in the sample drawing packages are span tables to assist in selecting framing members. Typical guard details are available for deck projects with samples that conform to the Ontario Building Code requirements. As with all projects we recommend owners retain the services of a qualified BCIN designated designer to prepare your plans and specifications. Some unique features or structures may require the services of an Architect or Professional Engineer. To view these packages please v i s i t o u r w e b s i t e , www.pertheast.ca, and follow the links on the Building Department page.

Planning for a Tent? Plan on a Building Permit. The warmer weather brings with it outdoor parties and weddings. If you are planning on having a tent or group of tents you may need a Building Permit. A tent or group of tents over 60 m2 (646 ft2) in gross area requires a Building Permit. In addition, if the tent is over 225 m2 (2,421 ft2) an inspection of the anchorage and tent structure is required by a Professional Engineer.

On a Septic System? When is the last time you thought about it? Your septic system is part of your home and your responsibility.

Don’t wait until you have a problem with your septic system. Protect your investment and avoid costly replacement – call a licensed septic contractor today.

SEPTIC TIPS

• Keep it Protected – Get it Inspected! - Have your septic tank inspected and pumped out by a licensed septic contractor as needed (on average every three to five years),

• Don’t Strain the Drain! - Use water efficiently to avoid overtaxing your system. Fix household leaks, run the dishwasher and clothes washer only on full loads, and consider installing high-efficiency fixtures.

• Think at the Sink! - Don’t pour grease, fats, or harmful chemicals like paints and solvents down your sink. They can clog or harm your system.

• Don’t overload the Commode! - Do not flush non-degradable items such as dental floss, diapers, coffee grounds, or feminine hygiene products.

• Shield your Field! - Care for your drain field by only planting grass, not driving or parking on it, and reducing roof and surface water drainage near the drain field.
