Welcome to the third edition of our Quarterly newsletter. The last three months has seen another intense period of work delivering projects to our clients, with our teams working extremely hard over the Easter and two May Bank Holidays. I am pleased to say that this work passed off without any incidents or accidents, and it’s been another good period from a Health and Safety perspective. It has, however, been noticeable that the number of close calls reported across the business has fallen, and if we are to continue improving and maturing our safety culture, it is important that we recognise and report those issues that could lead to accidents. Please keep up the good work, and with summer here, take extra care in the warm sunshine and be careful out there. At Pod-Trak we recognise the need to keep pace with an ever changing world and the use of technology. In order to improve productivity and reporting, the business has decided to roll out a new Information Management System (IMS) which will headed up and launched by Brian Gildea, supported by Matt Ardley. Please ensure you take ownership to make it successful for you and your project, and ultimately for the business. The second quarter also saw the successful completion of our largest and most challenging multi–disciplinary project to date, the Crossrail Ilford depot. Both our OHLE and Civils teams met the stringent completion milestones set by our client, and I would like to thank all the staff and teams involved in this key milestone Crossrail Project. Everyone associated with this project should be proud of delivering on time without any lost - time or RIDDOR accidents While much of the focus has been on Ilford, we cannot forget about all the other projects our Communication, OHLE, P-Way, ETE, Civils and Airport teams have been successfully delivering across the UK. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, and the newsletter details updates on the status of these projects. The business has been working hard behind the scenes to secure more work, and three recent awards were made to Pod-Trak Limited. The first is for the OHLE and Piling on the WAML Project; the second is Lostock Substation, and the third is the NWEP Phase 4 ATF Civils. Both Lostock and the ATF Civils are on the Northwest Electrification Project. With the summer sunshine upon us, many of you will be taking a well earned holiday with your loved ones. Welcome to the third edition of our Quarterly newsletter.

The last three months has seen another intense period of work delivering projects to our clients, with our teams working extremely hard over the Easter and two May Bank Holidays. I am pleased to say that this work passed off without any incidents or accidents, and it’s beenanother good period from a Health and Safety perspective.

OperationsFollowing on from the last quarterly report the OLE division has delivered the Ilford and Maidenhead projects, won WAML and also started work on the Bromsgrove project for ABC.This again strengthens Pod-Trak’s OLE delivery capability in the market place.

Ilford - the team achieved a major milestone in week 5 when all the Overhead line works were completed and commissioned at Ilford. This work was the completion of roads 1 and 2 along with the new sidings at the country end of the depot. All the works were completed over the bank holiday weekend with the team working around the clock.

Anglia Structures - in the period after the successful delivery of the first eight structures we were awarded an additional 19 structures to replace in weeks 4 , 7 and 10.In week 4 the team delivered 11 out of the 12 structures planned with only a shortfall of one structure due to a design issue. This structure was planned in week 10 and success-fully delivered. The remaining 7 structures that were planned in week 7 were not delivered due to the possession being cancelled and these structures are now planned to be installed in week 26.Again due to the Pod-Trak’s professional delivery and safety record in the delivery of the structures the client is looking at awarding another 14 structures, we will update you on this in the next news letter.

Maidenhead - again since the last newsletter we have successfully completed the works on this project with Balfour Beatty. Balfour Beatty has requested the Engineering management team remain on the project assisting the project in completing all the handback information for Network Rail. Balfour Beatty are pleased with the support we have provided on the project and as

a result would like to have us involved and playing a key part on upcoming projects at Gospel Oak and Newport and this is testament to the hard work from all our staff who have worked on this Project.

In the last quarter Pod-Trak have won the OLE delivery on the West Anglia Main Line (WAML).The Project scope is the installation of over 150 piles, the OLE Steel SPS and Wiring of a new third line between Lea Bridge Station and Angel Road Station and the installation of new HV feeder cables at Coppermill TSC in North London.

Other works won in the period are on the Bromsgrove project where we are working with ABC installing new Overhead line SPS and installing installing new SPS, conductor wiring and carry-ing out final registration.

Due to the works that we have over the next 12 months we are now looking at increasing our delivery teams with the addition of some new OLEC 2 and 3’s and Supervisors.

Hello from

The warm summer sunshine that we have all being enjoying recently has been shining brightly on the Civils North team as two new contracts have been awarded and commenced..

The first contract was awarded by Carillion to Pod-Trak as part of the North West Electrification Programme (NWEP). The contract, led by Phillip Ocego and supported by Martin West, consists of a number of projects which cover a wide variety of civil engineering disciplines. The initial project includes for the installation of a sub-station, platform trial holes, route clearance and the installation of GRP troughing.

Over the past three months the P-Way team have successfully completed 12 of the sites on the Sussex PSU project for McNicholas. The project is now looking to expand to a further 20 sites, taking the total to 90, which are planned to be delivered by November 2018. The P-Way project team have worked closely with the PTL plant department to manage all OTP operations in house, providing a “one stop shop” for P-Way works delivery. This demonstrates our capability in this field to our client, and has also been noted by others in this region.

We also commenced works with a new client – UK Power Networks (UKPN) - on the N321 Slave contactor project at Blackfriars. The project is part of the final phase of the Thames-link programme upgrade and is thus very high profile. The package of works contracted to PTL is multi-disciplined including P-Way, ETE and civils. The works are planned to be completed by September, undertaken over numerous possessions at Blackfriars station, with each one presenting different logistical challenges. Since the last period we have secured a new contract with Heathrow Airport Ltd which will commence in due course and will continue until Christmas 2017. The project involves the replacement of rail seat pads, clips and insulators over a 10.4km stretch of track within the Heathrow Express Tunnels at Heathrow Airport. This amounts to approximately 35,000 pads, 70,000 clips and 70,000 insulators to be changed by hand.

With summer just around the corner we are updating our procedure for the management of track in hot weather. This follows the recent Standards update to CRT management, and we will be providing support to our clients with assistance in CRTmanagement over the warmer months to al-low renewal works to continue.

Phillip, who recently completed the Stoke Gifford project, and Martin, who recently completed the challenging Eastern Apron Slab at Ilford depot, have got off to a flying start and we wish them all the best. The picture on the left shows the installation of a Crib wall for the sub-station at Lostock Station.

The second contract awarded was by TfGM as part of the Manchester Metrolink upgrade and the commissioning of two new sub-stations. The Principal Contractor is PSP, who have engaged Pod-Trak Ltd on the basis of a Design and Build Contract. Noble are undertaking the Civils Design, with Brecknell Willis undertaking the design of the OLE. In London the last three months have also seen the completion of a number of projects, most notably the Crossrail Ilford Depot, West Kensington Roof repairs on behalf of TfL, and the Hitachi Stoke Gifford Depot Shore Supply works.

The period also saw the Civils works at Blackfriars station make good progress. This work forms part of the P-Way contract with UKPN, and is scheduled for completion in the mid-dle of September 2017.

John Kearney and his team have undertaken some rather challenging works in the last three months, including over the Easter period. This included UTX DC4, which had a number of hidden obstructions only discovered on excavating the chambers. John and his team worked around the clock over a number of weeks to rectify the re-designed UTX and allow this critical section of work to be completed, opening up work for con-tractors following on.

2017 has been a busy period for the ETE team at Waterloo Station. We have been busy supporting the Wessex Capacity Alliance, a joint venture between Skanska and Colas Rail, working in collaboration with MottMacDonald, AECOM and Network Rail. Our work includes the cable diversion works, containment andcommissioning.

The project is the rebuilding of the former Waterloo International Terminals to bring platforms 20–24 back into use with modern facilities, new track and signalling, as well as extending platforms 1-4 to accommodate longer trains. Since the successful delivery of the Christmas works the ETE team have soldiered on with the cable diversion project despite numerous delays and setbacks out of our control.

The Alliance remain extremely happy with the Pod-Trak team’s performance and the “get the job done attitude” while working safely. The cable diversion works will be ongoing until the block-ade which is scheduled for August 2017. This is when they will make all of the final connections and the new track lay-out will be ready for passenger trains to run in September.

Railway Electrification - ETE – Gary Toth - ETE/ETM Contracts Manager

Plant

During the last three months the vast majority of On-Track Plant has been utilised throughout the business to support ongoing contracts.

A second successful weekend possession on the Anglia Structure Renewal contract was completed using both Doosan 270 Road rail excavators and six RR14 EVO Mewps, with no plant issues reported.

The previously reported continual investment in new OTP has resulted in the additional purchase of two Liebherr 914 Road Rail excavators direct from Liebherr. These machines are classed as medium lift capacity and will complement the heavy lift capacities of the two existing Doosan 270’S. Delivery of these machines is presently anticipated end of June/early July. The two recently purchased RR14 EVO 400 Mewp’s have arrived in this country, after their dispatch from the factory in Italy and are now completing final trials prior to hand over.

Upgrade works on the Mercedes Road Rail Unimog have been completed, allowing OHL Panning capability on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure. The machine has already completed OHL panning shifts on Manchester Metrolink and is now waiting sign off by Network Rail.

The Communications division has continued to grow and progress since the early part of the year.Work continues on the Crossrail Anglia DOO Project, between Stratford and Shenfield, installing GSM R cable to feed the Driver Only Operated camera system.

We are currently working on a new innovative “Blue Light Platform Gap“ warning system for Heathrow Express Limited at Padding-ton Station. The project is for the installation of a lighting warning system at Platform 6 to warn passengers of the large gap when boarding or exiting trains. Pod-Trak are managing this behalf of Heathrow Express, with Telent PLC installing the system.

A number of new projects are currently on the horizon. These include a GSM R upgrade project in the Severn Tunnel, which links South Gloucestershire in the west of England to Monmouthshire in South Wales. The project involves the upgrade of repeaterlocations, re-termination and replacement of cabling arrays and antennas, and will be supported by Pod-Trak owned OTP(On-Track –Plant). The project will take place over 12 consecutive weekend possessions.

Then there is the fibre optic upgrade projects on the DLR to upgrade the VCC (Vehicle Control Centre) borders. This involves re-routing fibre routes to support additional signal paths to facilitate the upgrade. Also involved is a new communications link being installed to the FLRT (First Line Response Teams) facility at Shadwell Station. The Comms division also runs all mechanical and electrical projects and is currently working on a solu-tion for new lighting systems in the REB area of platform 1 for the Wessex Capacity Alliance at Waterloo Station.

On Tuesday 02nd May 2017, we successfully completed the section proving element of the Overhead Line discipline at Ilford. It felt to many, that this day would never come, especially through the early month’s in 2016 when the integrated pro-gramme was being compiled in a makeshift meeting room in Aladdin’s, which had constant water running from the ceil-ing.As with any multi-discipline project, the OLE team is the tail-end Charlie asked to deliver unrealistic goals with limited ac-cess. Fortunately, on this occasion we had good access times and managed to plan the outputs to satisfy all parties, which was down to working with our client and other subcontractors. This project has been far from plain sailing and the efforts of the core team is what made the delivery possible and work-ing together as a team on site and off also helped to avoid everyone going mad. A special mention to Chris (Rasher) Baker and Ben (No.1 Son) Talman, who managed and supervised the majority of the delivery works.A special mention to Chris Baker, Ben Talman and James Whittle who managed and supervised the majority of the deliv-ery works.

Over the past 12 months, we have completed all stages on time to hit our client’s and other stakeholder’s milestones as follows:

Ilford DepotProject Feature

• Stage 3A – De-wirement of old sidings.• Stage 3B – Electrification of the Inlet/Outlet.• Stage 3C+D – Electrification of Roads 1 & 2.• Stage 4 – Electrification of the new sidings A to K and Workshop A

The above stages (3B, 3C+D and 4) consisted of the following works:• Installation of Small Parts Steel (SPS) to over 300 points.• Running of OLE Conductors (18 new wire runs)• Installation of 21 section insulators.• Installation of 9 lineside switches.• Final registration and pantograph checks throughout.• Installation of over 500 traction return bonds

To achieve the above stages, circa 25,000 hours have been accrued with no lost time injuries or accidents and fatiguemanagement controlled throughout.Commercially this project has been challenging and keeping on top of all the changes has been tough, but with the sup-port of Phil Doyle, we have managed to increase the turnover by 50% plus.

What this project has proved, is that Pod-Trak can undertake major OLE works and compete against anyone else in the industry and that is down to strong leadership, good management & supervision and dedicated site operatives with the right skills and more importantly the right attitude.

I would like to personally thank everyone who has been involved in this project, especially all those in the core team.

The curtain came down on the Ilford Yard Sidings project in the early hours of Monday 22nd May 2017, bringing to an end over 9 months of painstaking planning and implementation. The Civils team broke ground with the first depot possession on 6th August 2016, carrying out enabling works to Roads 12-13 to free up throughput to the existing depot; no-one would have envisaged the level of acceleration required to complete the project to the original programmed end date. Working around the clock from January through to May, over 150,000 hours were amassed on site by the Civils Team alone without a lost time incident or accident.

Much of the success of the project came down to the grit and determination of Cathal O’Sullivan and Gerard Kelly who were first involved in the planning and tendering of the project along with Hugh Byrne back in late 2015, suitably backed up by Michael Byrne, Denis Ferry, Shane Gillespie, Robertas Petrauskas and Hugh McGuire, amongst others.

From January 2016 Pod-Trak were awarded the East Apron Civils package, which consisted of the grey area between Phase 2 (Work-shop A) and Stage 3-6 (Sidings) schemes; many challenges were faced integrating two seemingly separate Civils design packages, including the now infamous “Bermuda Triangle” and the single point of entry/exit to site via the Northern Access Road. Perhaps the greatest challenge in this area was the first milestone pour on 12th January; with a planned start time of 11am that morning, the pour didn’t commence until 2pm with steel still being tied and new ducts being installed up to 5pm that evening due to last minute design changes from the client, resulting in completion of the brush finish at 11pm that night – all this whilst battling snow and rain! A further pour on 20th February consisted of over 40 concrete wagons and a 30m mobile boom pump from Camfaud, starting at 5am to mitigate risk of delays to the flow of concrete wagons into the depot.Peaking at over 120 operatives per day in March this year we recruited many excellent tradesmen and staff and a special mention must be made for Office Administrator Elaine Slingsby who had to process countless inductions, competency checks, TVPs and site documentation as well as maintaining a steady flow of tea to the Ley Street office staff!

Working in a collaborative environment in the open plan Ley Street offices with our client VolkerFitzpatrick and agents from Crossrail, many logistical and design challenges were encountered and faced head-on with the informed decision-making and technical know-how required to meet the finish date. Tensions ebbed and flowed throughout, but safe delivery of the project and sight of the end-goal were never lost, facilitated through daily Supervisor briefings and weekly Box Plan, Race Card, Progress & Whiteboard meetings. Several Safety Stand Down days were held throughout the project to reflect on the achievements and milestones met by the Team, with refreshments provided by Crossrail on each occasion.

One last job is to mention our supply partners, without whom this project would have been a lot more difficult; specialist contrac-tors Ballycommon, JK Rail, Deploy UK Rail, WSM, SCS, ESG Scientific and Batth Contracts contributed greatly as did our supply chain of Scott Parnell, Evergrip, Hanson Concrete, Rainham Steel, Llynch, Flannery Plant, CES, Coyle Haulage, Speedy Hire, GGH, A-Plant, VP Groundforce, MGF Ltd, Jewson, Rosehill Rail and many more.

To wrap up and summarise the scale of the Civils project I thought I’d share some of the huge numbers and stats with everyone, showing the capability of Pod-Trak as a total solutions provider, in one of the most challenging environments faced in the rail indus-try in recent years.

Facts & Figures• 3000m of track, foul and storm drainage plus 550m of water & fire mains installed• Over 500 manholes and chambers constructed• Almost 27km of utility ducting and troughing routes laid – the same distance as the crow flies from Head Office to Ilford Depot!• Over 11km of line painting either hot-laid or torched-on• 22,300m3 of spoil removed; equal to 2,500 muck-away wagons or the volume of nearly 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools• Nearly 2,800m3 of concrete poured, delivered on 375 wagons• 14 month programme condensed into 9½ months

Finally, before signing off I’d like to personally thank all thecolleagues who helped in any shape or form and look forward to crossing paths again at some stage in the future; hopefully this project will showcase our capabilities and skills, securing future projects with both existing and new clients.
