Introduction to STAR Conference 2017 Transportation has a key role in enabling the economy and in continuing to increase Scotland’s prosperity. Changes within the wider political context will bring challenges and provide new opportunities for innovation. In a time of huge uncertainty, the transport profession will have to play its part in managing change. We invite you as transport professionals to share ideas and collaborate by participating in the STAR 2017 Conference. Join us at STAR – Scotland’s only fully multi-disciplinary Transport Conference. It is imperative that public and private bodies work effectively together to develop practical solutions. STAR provides a unique opportunity for professionals from local and central government, private practice, the voluntary sector and academia to share knowledge and to learn from each other’s experiences. We invite your contribution from any sphere of transportation practice. Some of the key transport questions in Scotland today are: • “How does Scotland respond to regulatory challenges

in public transport?” • “What do Local Authorities need to do to maximise

use of public assets and meet the needs of service users?”

• “How do we encourage effective co-existence between cycling and other modes?”

• “How do we encourage better integration of transport modes and services to support active travel and use of public transport?”

• “Can we create more liveable environments?” • “Can we learn lessons from planned and unplanned

disruptions to the transport system?” • “How do we meet sustainable transport objectives in

rural areas?” • “What role can technology play in shaping Scotland’s

transport?” • “What evidence base is required for decision makers

to deliver meaningful change?” Let’s join together at STAR to shape transport in an uncertain future.

Audience STAR offers an opportunity unique in Scotland to exchange knowledge and good practice. The conference is aimed at everyone engaged in any aspect of transport including policies and strategies, research, strategic planning, development and appraisal, design, implementation and evaluation, maintenance, operations and management of services and projects. It will therefore be of value to everyone interested in transport issues. The conference has consistently received very good feedback from delegates including:

“A great event, complemented by a great variety of presentations”

“Excellent overall, venue and event”

“Excellent day – congratulations to all the organisers”

Format

The conference will comprise plenary sessions and parallel themed sessions covering a diverse range of current transport topics and will conclude with a wine reception and prize-giving ceremony.

Venue The Conference will be held again at the Technology and Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, 99 George Street, Glasgow G1 1RD.

The aim of STAR 2017 is: “To disseminate current transport research and practice that is relevant and applicable to the transport agenda within Scotland.”

Key Features STAR 2017 will focus on results of research, good practice and practical issues of implementation that are relevant to Scottish transport policy, infrastructure delivery and transport provision. The Conference will provide an opportunity to learn about new and emerging practice in transport in Scotland in an informal yet informative setting, and will allow participants to help shape the Scottish transport agenda. A further major benefit of the conference will be the opportunity to network and the timetable for the day is structured to offer delegates additional opportunities to interact, including a wine reception at the end of the event. See the draft programme opposite for full details of what to expect at STAR 2017.
