Greetings! We will long remember our Second Sunday of Advent 2019. As you know, we celebrated both the 65th anniversary of the founding of St. Mark’s (October 19, 1954) and the 60th anniversary of the dedication of the church building (December 11, 1960). Thanks to everyone who made the day a special one. Mark your calendars: we will celebrate the diamond anniversary of the church’s founding (October 19, 2029) on the following Sunday, October 21. This week we remember Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk who received a revelation on March 18, 1958. He was standing at the corner of Fourth and Walnut in downtown Louisville, KY. (There is a sign there now that marks the spot.) His revelation? He loved the people he saw around him on the street. Reflecting on this experience, Merton later wrote, “It was like waking from a dream of separateness, of spurious self-isolation in a special world, the world of renunciation and supposed holiness . . . .Having entered the strictest of monasteries in 1941, he now suddenly regarded his “renunciation and supposed holiness” as illusory. He would remain a priest and monk for the rest of his life, but he would confront continually the tension between

Greetings!

We will long remember our Second Sunday of Advent 2019. Asyou know, we celebrated both the 65th anniversary of thefounding of St. Mark’s (October 19, 1954) and the 60thanniversary of the dedication of the church building(December 11, 1960). This week we remember Thomas Merton, a Trappist monkwho received a revelation on March 18, 1958. He wasstanding at the corner of Fourth and Walnut in downtownLouisville, KY. (There is a sign there now that marks the spot.)His revelation? He loved the people he saw around him on thestreet.

Reflecting on this experience, Merton later wrote, “It was likewaking from a dream of separateness, of spurious self-iso ‐lation in a special world, the world of renunciation andsupposed holiness . . . .”

Having entered the strictest of monasteries in 1941, he nowsuddenly regarded his “renunciation and supposed holiness”as illusory. He would remain a priest and monk for the rest ofhis life, but he would confront continually the tension between

his call to isolation and his call to the world.

His autobiography, The Seven Story Mountain, describes thistension directly. A biog raphy by Michael Mott, The SevenMountains of Thomas Merton, describes this tension in evengreater detail. Mott suggests that prior to his accidental deathin 1968 (while in Bangkok, Thailand, to participate in aninternational conference on Christian and Buddhistmonasticism) he felt seriously conflicted and may even haveconsidered leaving the priesthood.

Merton is a superb writer. Here’s a vintage quotation: “Beanything you like, be madmen, drunks, and bastards of everyshape and form, but at all costs avoid one thing: success . . . .If you have learned only how to be a success, your life hasprobably been wasted.” What do you think Merton meant? Thequestions raised by John the Baptist (reported in the Gospelwe will hear on Sunday) may offer a clue.
