Kia ora koutou jazz lovers!

The 2020 National Jazz Festival is the 58th to be hosted right here in the heart of Tauranga. The festival is a musical treasure trove and I’m delighted to welcome so many jazz fans

to one of the city’s great, home-grown events.

For many people, locals and visitors alike, this is an absolute highlight – a must-do event that brings them back year-after-year. Take a look at this year’s programme and you’ll understand why the festival has such a loyal following. It literally offers something for everyone, featuring top jazz musicians from New Zealand and around the world. It is also a showcase for some of the very best emerging jazz players from across Aotearoa, who are here to take part in the National Youth Jazz Competition.

Events like this play a key part in promoting the cultural, social and economic wellbeing of our city. That’s why Tauranga City Council is proud to continue its close association with this iconic festival.

On behalf of the community, I extend a very warm welcome to all of our visitors. Please enjoy some musical magic with us and while you’re here, sample some great cuisine and check out the attractions of New Zealand’s fastest growing city.

The Tauranga Jazz Society are proud to once again present the National Jazz Festival and National Youth Jazz Competition over Easter 2020.

We are so pleased to bring back acclaimed Australian

jazz musician James Morrison as our headline performer. He amazed the audience at his last appearance here. James was artistic co-director of UNESCO International Jazz Day 2019 alongside jazz legend Herbie Hancock.

Jazz can trace its roots back over 100 years and yet continues to be at the forefront of musical innovation. Jazz has evolved over the years to encompass a wide range of musical styles from its original American origins, absorbing influences from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere to become a truly universal language. It is arguably the most inclusive and collaborative art form on earth!

The Tauranga Jazz Society is committed to holding more events in the city to add to the existing events such as our regular Jazz Jam nights at the Mount Social Club which continue to attract new performers and audiences. Jazz is indeed alive and well in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.

Our thanks once again go to all our sponsors and especially to Tauranga City Council and TECT. Without their generous support this event would not be possible.

We hope you enjoy the depth and variety of concerts on offer and look forward to your support for our up and coming performers at the National Youth Jazz Competition at Baycourt.

Once again enjoy the weekend and keep music live.

Get your tickets now and take advantage of the Early BIrd specials(offer ends 14 Feb 2020)

Thank you to our sponsors, funders, supporters, volunteers, musicians, schools, teachers and band leaders, and most importantly to our fantastic audience – ENJOY!

Pianist and composer Kevin Field has collaborated with some of the top international names in jazz including Grammy nominated guitarists Mike Moreno and Nir Felder, and Charles Haynes - drummer/producer for Kanye West and Lada Gaga. He is a well-known name in NZ jazz circles and has performed in the UK, USA and Australia. His latest album Soundtology has just been released in Europe.

In this concert Kevin is joined by one of New Zealand’s greatest expatriate vocalists Bex Peterson.

Originally from Auckland, Bex made her name in the jazz scene before branching out in soul and R & B. Under the stage name Sassy, she is a household name in her current home Fiji.
