THINK AGAIN

Message from the Staff

New. Fresh. Exciting.

Instructor Spotlight

That’s what we have in store for you this fall. And it all starts with a revamped THINK AGAIN.

As more users register online and our course offer-ings continue to grow, we’ve shifted away from the old-fashioned catalog with class listings. Instead, you’ll find an updated newsletter format, which helps us do several things. First, this new format lets us better share stories and more detailed infor-mation about our exciting programs and classes. Second, it also supports sharing news about our stu-dents and instructors as well as learning outcomes.

Additionally, it reduces our use of paper and helps support the University’s sustainability pledge.

You’ll still find some course listings. In each issue, we’ll highlight a sample of NEW classes (pages 6 and 7) as well as our TOP PICKS for the semester (back cover). You’ll also find course listings throughout the catalog by topic as well as easy-to-follow links to our web pages and online catalog.

We hope you enjoy this new format! See page 5 for ways to share your feedback.

Retired Reverend David P. Bridges, a new writing instructor, will see his fourth book published this fall, a novel titled The Broken Circle (Wipf and Stock, 2013). Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, the nov-el follows Dr./Maj. James Breathed as he chooses the cause of the Confederacy over medicine. The novel is filled with historically accurate battle scenes, and the characters are all real historical people. Bridges brings to the classroom not only his expertise in research and writing, but also his experience as a published novelist. Fall classes: “How to Write Family History and Biography” and “Writing Historical Fiction.”

Karen Wormald, owner of Kew Publications, is a professional writer and published author named one of the School’s most valuable instructors in 2012. As an instructor, she enjoys “hearing the light bulbs go ‘Click!’ when students realize they aren’t the hopelessly bad writers the managers who sent them to class think they are.” Teaching at Richmond has led to speaking en-gagements with professional groups and with state agencies. Wormald will teach two writing classes this fall: “Business Writers’ Bootcamp” and “Power Proofreading.”

David H. Morgan has worked in publishing for over forty years as a literary agent, freelance editor, fiction editor and publishers’ sales rep. He teach-es classes in fiction and nonfiction writing for publication. Morgan has helped writers become published authors—many of whom had been rejected by agents and publishing houses. As the owner of an eponymous editorial/ghostwriting business, Morgan brings years of writing experience and publishing expertise to his students. Selected fall classes: “Art and Craft of Creative Nonfiction” and “Writing a Nonfiction Book Proposal that Sells.”

Kathy Jenkins is one of the architects of our new Professional Organizing Certificate. She’s a Contributing Professional Organizer for Better Homes and Gardens’ latest book, Organize Your Home: Clutter Cures for Every Room. Catch up with Jenkins signing copies September 14 at Barnes & Noble Short Pump.

FALL 2013

Tom Parfitt’s first look at the culinary arts was behind a sink, washing

dishes.“I spent most of my time watching the chefs cook on the line, trying

to learn what I could, making my shift meals, and emulating what

they did,” he says.As Parfitt moved up through the ranks, he fell in love with the fast-

paced life of a restaurant kitchen. His work ranged from sous chef at

Zeus Gallery Café in Richmond, and a pastry cook at the world-class

City Zen restaurant in Washington, D.C., to working for a chocolatier

in Alexandria, Va., and even a little taste of vegetarian as a chef with

Ipanema in Richmond’s Fan District.

Eventually, Parfitt enrolled at L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg,

Md., where he honed his pastry skills—a more marketable skill set in

the culinary world. He ultimately returned to Richmond and started

a line of chocolates at his own Seven Hills Market, while also offering

culinary consulting and menu planning for local restaurants.

After a chance meeting with Cary Jamieson, then program specialist

with the School of Professional and Continuing Studies’ Landscape De-

sign Program, Parfitt was introduced to the University of Richmond’s

Culinary Arts Program, and his career took yet another direction.

Now a full-time instructor and program coordinator at the Culinary

Arts Center, Parfitt was instrumental in developing the new Baking and

Pastry Arts certificate, which he says, “walks the line of being good for

the hobby cook and prepping someone going into the business.”

Moving from the back-room kitchen to front and center as the

instructor has been rewarding, Parfitt says. “I love students

learning things and sending me pictures of what they’re

making. One of my favorite things is to … go to the farmer’s

market and see someone selling something that I know that

they picked up from a class, and seeing Richmond becom-

ing a little bit more of a pastry-centric town.”

Visit spcs.richmond.edu/culinary to hear Parfitt talk about

his vision for the Baking and Pastry Arts program. Then watch

the slideshow for a demonstration on the art of chocolate.

Massage Therapy Studies Program wins AMTA Schol-arship for SchoolsIn 2013 the American Massage Thera-py Association introduced the AMTA Scholarship for Schools. The scholarship supports schools by providing scholarships to their massage therapy students.

AMTA awarded twenty $1,000 scholar-ships to selected schools. The University of Richmond was chosen as a scholarship winner based on the academic rigor of its clinical massage therapy studies program.

SPCS selected the scholarship recipient, Sharry Goode, based on her application and essay. She plans to graduate from the program in December 2013.

Goode, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, found clinical massage

offered a healing touch in her own treat-ment and recovery. From her experience as a patient, Goode “wanted to pass on the positive energy [she] experi-enced through massage.” Her studies in the School’s mas-sage therapy studies program have trained and prepared her to do just that.

Do You Chain Maille?Chain maille jewelry and decorative pieces are made by weaving together metallic rings into decorative patterns and weaves. Our chain maille classes offer jewelry making techniques for beginners as well as more advanced artisans. From charm bracelets to necklaces and earrings, our classes give you the materials and skills to create beautiful pieces, for yourself or as gifts for others.

All of our classes result in creating a take-home piece. Students receive one-on-one attention from instructor Celeste Miller, who also provides group instruction along with individualized commentary on the pieces created. Miller focuses her courses on teaching the skills and sharing the resources needed to make your own pieces in the future.

After nearly 25 years in “Corporate Amer-ica,” Miller retired to pursue her creative side. Her chemical engineering back-ground and love for “process” attracted her to stained glass, glass mosaics and fused glass. Miller’s desire to do more than just fused glass led to a certification in Precious Metal Clay (PMC) over five years ago. Learning chain maille became a “must” when Miller’s PMC students expressed a desire to make charm bracelets for their fine silver pieces.

Becoming an Organized StudentIs your child underperforming academically because he/she just isn’t organized, can’t find homework in a “black-hole” backpack, turns papers in late or has a desk crammed with overflowing papers?

Studies have shown that students who lack critical organizational skills are at greater risk of suffering from lower academic success, self-esteem and productivity, and may have higher levels of stress and anxiety. Learning essential life skills such as organization and time management can help your child move forward. This course hopes to help stu-dents become better organized at home and school, become proficient at time and project management, master effective study skills, develop self-esteem and confidence, grow to become more responsible and realize his/her full potential.

Designed for grades 6-8, this new course is taught by Kathy Jenkins, whose professional designations include Certified Professional Or-ganizer®, Certified Family Manager® Coach and Love & Logic® Parenting Facilitator/Coach.

This certificate program does not contain a pre-requisite course; instead, students are open to choose eight core courses that most interest them and to take them in any order.

Environment & Sustainability Programs – In the Garden and on the WebWhat do sustainability, ecology, conservation and going green mean to you? Are you an active recycler? New Formats Available for SHRM Learning System®

To meet the growing needs of human resource professionals, we have expand-ed our HR management programs and formats. The SHRM Learning System® is a comprehensive program that provides a review of the entire body of HR knowledge and prepares students to take either the PHR or SPHR exam. Students who earn these credentials know the most current principles and core practices of HR man-agement, and become more marketable when competing for top HR positions.

The School of Professional and Continuing Studies previously offered this program only on-campus (in person) for a 12-week session. We are pleased to also offer this program as a live-online, instructor-led option. In addition to the on-campus and online options for the full semester, we have also added a 3-day intensive program. This is ideal for students who feel they are ready to take the exam but need an inten-sive review or refresher.

Language and Cultural StudiesWhether driven by an interest to explore a new culture or to improve existing language skills, our language and culture classes help students of all levels accomplish cultural and language learning goals in a non-competitive class environment.

Language learning methods vary by instructor, but each course stresses confidence in the language and insight into the culture behind the language. University of Richmond pro-fessors, Fulbright scholars and local professionals all serve as language instructors. Each semester, we strive to offer courses at different levels, providing options for beginners as well as intermediate and advanced language students.

Our cultural enrichment program provides a fun yet educa-tional way for au pairs, international students and non-na-tive English speakers to practice and improve their English speaking skills, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension of the English language. Additional courses explore American customs, culture, history and entertainment.
