From the Acting Principal......

Dear Parents / Caregivers,

After speaking to some students within our school it has been brought to my attention thatsome of our students are engaging in video games that are not age appropriate. With theholidays ahead here are some hints and tips to help you keep your children safe on theinternet because as with the real world, the Internet has its seamy side and it's all too

easy for kids to stray into it.

Tip #1 - Parents have to get involved. " Just as you know every detail of the playground around the corner -- the jungle gym, the

swings you need to know your kids' online playground as well." Playing copilot to yourchild is the best way to make sure he/she stays safe while on the internet. You won't needto be glued to their side, but you should be somewhere in the room or checking infrequently.

Tip #2 - Set house rules

Decide how much time you're comfortable with your children being online and which sitesthey may go to. Visit www.SafeKids.com for lists of safe video games and contracts touse with your children. Talk about the rules and the consequences for breaking them tomake sure there is no confusion.

Tip # 3 - Teach them to protect their privacy

While they won't fully understand the consequences of revealing personal informationonline, you should still make sure your children know:

* never to give their name, phone number, e-mail address, password, postal address, school, or picture without your permission

* not to open an e-mail from people they don't know * not to respond to hurtful or disturbing messages

* not to get together with anyone they "meet" online.

Tip # 4 - Be their go-to Instruct your child to come straight to you when they see anything that makes them feel

uncomfortable, and assure them that you won't overreact, blame them, or immediatelyrescind their online privileges.

Tip # 5 - Turn your ISP into your ally

Before buying a safety product, work with what you've got, starting with your Internetservice provider’s (ISP) free, reliable, parental controls that can limit children's access towebsites and communication features by age, content categories, time and other choices.

Tip # 6 -Tune up your search engine

Your search engine can be pressed into service for free. (But be aware: A savvy childcould switch the settings back.) Once you set restrictions, Google will block sites withexplicit sexual material (Preferences/SafeSearch Filtering). AltaVista puts several types ofoffensive content off-limits with its Family Filter (Settings/Family Filter setup).

Tip # 7 - Stay in a kid-friendly zone

For beginners as young as 4, consider confining online exploration to web addresses thatlist child-safe sites on everything from TV, movies, music, and games to world history, science, and trivia. Some good choices are:

* web directory Yahooligans * answer supplier Ask Jeeves for Kids

* the American Library Association's Great Web Sites for Kids * the U.S. government's "Dot Kids" domain .

A copy of a SafeKids contract is available on the Skoolbag App for you to view and use tohelp you keep our kids safe while playing on the internet

Remember to limit screen time and get them out in nature playing and exploring in theoutdoors during these school holidays.

Kind Regards

Sharon Willoughby Acting Principal

Nihongo News Ginza 2018

On Tuesday 3rd July some of our Year 7 students met at Ginza for a Japanese banquetmeal. The students ate in a traditional style room where they sat at low tables andenjoyed an authentic Japanese atmosphere.

Firstly the students enjoyed an entrée tasting plate that had a variety of different foods totry, including Sushi of course! For the main meal there was a choice of Chicken Teriyaki,Yakiniku Beef or Tempura Udon and then there was green tea ice cream for dessert. Thestudents really enjoyed trying new foods and went home with full bellies! A big thank youto the parents who dropped off and picked up their children.
