Description

Designer/Maker: Homestead layout and farm established by Alexander Macleay, first Colonial Secretary of NSW

Builder/Maker: George Macleay (Alexander Macleay's son)

Construction years: 1827-

Physical description:

Physical condition and/or Archaeological potential:

The site has high archaeological potential. Much of the colonial landscape and garden is still evident. Sub-surface remnants of previous agricultural structures and/or associated artefacts may still be within the boundaries of the original allotments. Flaggy Creek Quarry site: About 100 metres south of the Round House is a quarry in the Flaggy Creek bed, a tributary of the Mount Hunter Rivulet. The quarry was a source of Wiannamatta stone (advertised in the press of the 1820s - '30s as Cowpastures stone), a highly-figured mudstone used for paving (i.e. flagstones) at Brownlow Hill (the console table base, veranda and entrance hall flagging) and Elizabeth Bay House (the entrance hall and flagging, saloon

stair and upper floor chimneypieces). The Camden Park portico columns are reputedly from this quarry. The quarry provides a rare instance of a surviving connection between early houses and the source of their materials and is an important archaeological site (Carlin, 2008).

Modifications and dates: House Modification: The house at Brownlow Hill was originally built as two small separate wings of brick at right angles to one another, with a separate kitchen at the rear making up the third side of the Courtyard. By 1834 alterations were made transforming the house which was "now pronounced the best in the Colony." The two small wings were joined, forming an L shaped building. The original roof endings are still to be seen beneath the present roof. Within the angles another section was then added to the east wing, On the right of the north elevation is a wing which was added by Jeremiah Downes, who bought the property In 1875. At that time the front door was replaced and a small portico built before it. A cellar is approached from the rear. In the 1890s a portico-ed entry way to the front door, and new Victorian front door, was added, along with a new wing to the west of the original house. John & Joan Downes made significant modifications in c.1961, installing two internal bathrooms in the eastern wing, a corridor connecting the entry hall with the eastern wing rooms leading to a relocated entry door, moved to be centrally placed on the eastern wing. An internal kitchen was also provided within the central wing of the house, including the removal of an internal wall between a former bedroom and scullery. Landscape Modification In the 1850s the property was leased for pig raising when much damage was done to the surrounding growth. In 1859, the property was leased by Jeremiah Downes. Brownlow Hill was sold to Severin K Salting and in 1862 was again leased to Downes who purchased the property from Salting in 1875. In the intervening period it was managed as a series of tenant farms In the 1960s, a quarry was established on the western extremity on the property with minimal impact on the working farm. Further information: The general layout is well maintained but individual items and some overgrown areas need attention. The aviary is in urgent need of restoration. The outer garden, lane/ Loop Road and hedgerows are in need of some weed management, to retain significant views and vistas, and control spread, particularly of African olives and privet. The olives in particular are invasive as scrub elsewhere on the farm, although this is under management. The pond/dam wall is in need of repair and some reconstruction, to prevent further cracking and slumping.

Current use: dairy farm and residence

Former use: working farm and residence

Notes for William Duck: William Duck and Elizabeth Gummer were married at

Kingsbury Somerset before leaving for Australia 1855. They travelled on the "Gilmore"

and arrived October of that year. William first worked for Alexander McLeay at

Brownlow Hill. He took up land on Bobs Range 1860, Portions 42 and 43. William had a

mixed farm and did fencing the district and he later bought adjoining properties. In the

landholders' returns of 1883 for the district of Picton he owned two hundred and seven

acres, eight horses, ten head of cattle and eighteen pigs. William and Elizabeth's four sons

were George, William, John and Charles. Their only daughter was Sarah who married

Jess Stuckey and worked at Gledswood. John was a schoolteacher at Pumpkin Hills near

Lakesland. William was a butcher and moved to Junee. George Duck, the eldest son,

remained on the property at Bobs Range. The property was later named "East View".

George married Isabella Rapley 1879 Isabella was the daughter of Thomas and Eliza

Rapley, who lived at Werombi. George and William planted an orchard and bought more

land. George and Isabella had five children:- Fred, Herbert, Eliza, Spencer and Hazel.

Herb and Spencer Duck grew large areas of winter peas on the hills and slopes of their

farms. East View remained the Duck family until it was sold the 1940s and Herb retired

to live at Elderslie. Elizabeth Duck died 1909, aged seventy-seven years. William Duck

died 1917, aged eighty-one years. They are buried at Glenmore. William's youngest son,

Charles, bought Portion 30 and 31 at Orangeville. He was the first person Orangeville to

plant Valencia oranges 1905. He also grew peaches, apples and vegetables. The fruit was

taken to Camden Railway Station by horse and wagon, empty fruit cases constituted the

back load to Orangeville. The Uniting Church (formerly Methodist) was built on land

given by Charles Duck. Charles married Maude Kiss whose sister was the wife of

William Duck junior of Junee. During World War One, Charles bought Portions 24 and

25 from Wheelers at Werombi. The price paid was thirty-seven shillings and six pence

per acre. Some of Portion 24, which belonged to Dunbars, was bought for six pounds per

acre. Orchards were planted on the section fronting Silverdale Road. The remainder of

the land had a good stand of bush. A windbreak of pines sheltered the orchards, which

were mainly citrus. They were well-kept orchards and a pretty sight from Silverdale

Road. Charles loved his garden and grew many roses. It is now looked after by his

daughter- -law Alice Duck and still has lots of roses, which are a blaze of colour the

spring and summer. Before the days of common use of motor cars the Duck family used

to go for picnic driving horse and sulkies. Other neighbours would go too. As most of the

families were large there would be quite a procession of horse drawn vehicles. Charles

Duck died 1962 and is buried at The Oaks. There are still many of his descendants living

at Orangeville/Werombi today. Charles and Maude Duck had eight children. Barney and

Jim Ducks' orchards were on Portions 24 and 25 at Werombi. Lloyd Ducks' home and

NORRIS William known 1860 farmer, William Norris was born 16 Nov 1813

Cornwallis, NSW, and died 25 Sep 1843 Windsor, NSW. He married (1) Lucy Brown

1836 Windsor, NSW, daughter of Daniel Brown and Mary Potter. She was born 16 May

1814 Cornwallis, NSW, and died 08 Nov 1876 Windsor, NSW. He married (2) Mary

Ann Lucas 11 Jul 1849 West Maitland, NSW, daughter of Richard Lucas and Charlotte.

She was born 1827 Gunville, Dorset, England, and died 31 Aug 1863 The Oaks, NSW.

Notes for William Norris: About 1836, William Norris formed a marriage with Lucy

Upton, nee Brown (his brother James was married to Lucy's sister). In subsequent years

before William's early death, William and Lucy had five children baptised at Windsor

R/C. From Lucy's earlier marriage (aged 13, to Jesse Upton) she had three children.

Apparently William and Lucy never legally married, as Lucy is buried under the name

Upton Windsor C/E near her son, Henry Norris.

A Sydney Morning Herald report of 20th December 1842 on the Windsor Court of Petty

Sessions read: A most savage assault was committed on Friday night, on William Norris,

a settler of Cornwallis, which may be attended with a fatal result. He was attacked on the

government reserve there, and his head has been battered to such an extent as to place his

life the greatest jeopardy. Shortly after the outrage, Norris was carried into Mr Fisher's

Commercial Hotel where every attention was paid to him. Dr. White, accompanied by

Dr. Stewart, shortly afterwards attended him, when the former extracted 4 pieces of bone

which were pressing on the brain, he having been wounded two parts of the skull, both

before and behind. It is supposed that the injuries were inflicted with a heavy batten,

which was produced Court today, Saturday when two men of the names of Punch and

O'Byrne were brought before the bench on suspicion of being the guilty parties and were

remanded until it was ascertained whether the man would live or die. Dr. White is still

doubt as to Norris ultimate recovery.

A later newspaper reported that the two men were John Punch, who received a 2 year

sentence, and Loughlin O'Byrne, who received 18 months. William subsequemntly died

on 25th September 1843 and the verdict of the inquest was that he died from effects of

injuries inflicted by John Punch. The death is mentioned the Windsor Express and

Richmond Advertiser of 23rd November 1843, and the Morning Chronicle of 24th

January 1844 reported the second court case when the two men were convicted of killing

and slaying one William Norris and received the very light sentence of 16 months hard

labour from that date. William's headstone bears the following verse: A faithful friend

and father dear The loss of him we do sustain. More About William Norris: Arrived: 08

FATAL ACCIDENT

26

On Saturday evening as Mr. & Mrs. Denis Reilly of Glenlogan were proceeding

homewards from town a spring cart the horse became unmanageable and running the

vehicle against a fence effected its complete overturn. Mrs. Reilly escaped with a

fractured collarbone and severe injuries to the hand, but Mr. Reilly unfortunately fell

beneath the vehicle, the side rail of which came with very great force across his loins. Dr.

Bartlett was prompt attendance on the sufferers and did all that skill could dictate to

alleviate their suffering, but from the first he held out no hopes of Mr. Reilly's recovery,

whose internal injuries were of a very serious nature. The injured man, however,,

lingered on dreadful agony until 4 o'clock on Tuesday morning when death released him

from further suffering. Very great sympathy is felt the district for the grief stricken family

their hour of trial and affliction. Mrs. Reilly we are happy to state is progressing towards

recovery. More About Denis Riley: Arrived: 03 Feb 1858, Telegraph As A: Free Person

SMALL Henry born 30 Apr 1799 Brede, Sussex, England. He immigrated 7 Aug 1841

on the China He died Senile Dacay on 3 Dec 1885 at the age of 86 Theresa Park, NSW.

Henry was buried on 5 Dec 1885 at Uniting Churchyard Cawdor, NSW. He was a

Groom, Butcher, Dairy Farmer. He immigrated as a Free Person On a few farms it must

have been impossible for all the people to live together in the same building, even those

who were relations. Here the evidence points to small communities of families under

different roofs, bound by kinship and shared labour. Henry Small took up a lease on

Glendaruel, Brownlow Hill in 1849, bring with him a wife, eight sons and two daughters.

His farm was one of the biggest on the estate and he stocked it with dairy cattle. In 1855

he was called a substantial farmer with an extensive dairy and several sons to whom he

entrusts the management of his stock. By 1859 four of his sons and both daughters were

married and all but a son and a daughter lived near their father, presumably on his farm.

This adds up to five couples, all with children. The missing son, James Small, seems to

have spent five years with his wife's family at Cawdor, on Camden Park, but in 1859 he

returned to a farm of his own on Brownlow Hill, the only one of the boys to have an

independent lease. There was a dairy at Brownlow Hill, apparently set up by old

Alexander Macleay, who lived there in the late 1840s. Henry Small and his sons, also at

Brownlow Hill, they probably took over Macleay's herd, were the only tenants in the

district with a dairy. Henry Small and Harriet Manser were married on 26 Jun 1822 in

Northiam, Sussex, England. Harriet Manser, daughter of Thomas Manser and Keturah

Murgin, was born on 13 Jul 1806 in Westfield, Sussex, England. She immigrated on 7

Road in Marrickville, NSW. Harriet was buried on 29 Sep 1887 at Uniting Churchyard in

Cawdor, NSW. She immigrated as a Free Person. Children of Henry Small and Harriet
