    There was speculation thatLiow would be appointed partypresident.

    A party insider said that Ongsdecision had not only pacifiedChuas supporters who wantfresh elections, but he had alsostopped the incumbent leadersfrom sharing the spoils of war.

    The EGM could be held as soonas seven days or within 30 days ofthe requisition.

    KUALA LUMPUR: No new admission ofInfluenza A (H1N1) patient to intensive careunits (ICU) was reported yesterday.

    Health director-general Tan Sri Dr IsmailMerican said, however, 167 new patientswith symptoms of influenza-like illness hadbeen hospitalised for treatment and 166 ofthem had been discharged.

    The number of ILI cases still under treat-ment nationwide is 699 at 80 hospitals, withseven of the patients in private hospitals.

    KUALA LUMPUR: Newly elected MCAdeputy president Datuk Seri LiowTiong Lai disclosed that most of thecentral committee (CC) members didnot agree with party president DatukSeri Ong Tee Keats decision to call foran extraordinary general meeting todetermine whether there is a need forfresh party elections.

    Liow told reporters after the CCmeeting yesterday the CC memberswanted a better way to resolve theparty crisis following the decision at theEGM on Saturday to reject the leader-ship of both Ong and former deputypresident Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

    There must be a better way tostabilise the party but it is the right of thepresident to call for an EGM under Article30.1 of the party constitution, he said.

    Liow said according to the partyconstitution, fresh elections can onlybe held with the resignation of two-thirds of the CC members.

    We give time to the presidentto think the best way (to resolve theproblem), he said, adding that Ongmust define the resolution based onthe party constitution.

    Earlier, Ong did not tender hisresignation as promised after he lostthe majority support of the delegatesbut directed secretary-general DatukWong Foon Meng to prepare an EGMand let the delegates decide the needfor fresh party elections.

    Vice-presidents Datuk Seri KongCha Ha and Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen,Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong andWanita chief Datin Paduka Chew MeiFun had joined Liow for a high-teasession before the press conference.

    On his new post as deputy president,Liow said he accepted the promotionwith a heavy heart but vowed to reunitethe party and help Barisan Nasional suc-ceed in the next general election.

    He said his election as the deputypresident was done after the commit-tee had interpreted the third resolutionto reject Chua in the EGM under Article174 that since Chua had not been rein-stated, the post was vacated and theinterpretation by the committee is finaland shall not be subject to question byany court of law.

    He said the election was conductedbased on Articles 23 and 40 of the partyconstitution and he thanked Kong, whowas also nominated as deputy presi-dent, for making way for him.
