    Lau to wedCarol Chuwithin100daysANDY Lau, the Hongkong superstar whose relation-ship with his Malaysian girlfriend of 24 years, CarolChu, came under intense media scrutiny over theweekend following the death of Chus father, is to wedChu within 100 days.

    According to a report yesterday in Sin Chew Daily ,which quoted a reporter from the Singapore Chineseevening daily Lianhe Wabao , Lau, who flew intoMalaysia to attend the funeral of Chus father, haspromised the Chus to marry her according to Chinesetradition to full the senior Chus last wish.

    According to the report, a close family memberhad told the reporter in an interview that Lau, whowas accompanied by Carol and their daughter, felt he owed his father-in-law an explanation and afterconsulting the Chus decided to hold a wedding re-ception within 100 days in accordance with Chinesetradition (which dictates that Carol must wed within100 days of her fathers death or wait until after threeyears).

    The family member also told the reporter that it was decided that all ang pows collected at the wed-ding reception will be donated to charity, in particularthe funds for Typhoon Morakot victims in Taiwan.

    It is learnt that Carol was the apple of her fatherseye and Lau had, during the registration of his mar-riage to Carol in Canada in the early 90s, promised thesenior Chu a proper salutation for her.

    Lau, who has never openly admitted Carol is hislove, managed to elude some 40 local and Hongkongpaparazzi at the funeral.

    Shaiful Zakaria, 24, who iscompleting his Masters Degreein Architecture at the Universityof Adelaide, was awarded the Pa-trons Trophy in the annual Mer-deka Awards sponsored by the SAChapter of the Australia-MalaysiaBusiness Council (AMBC) in Ad-elaide. Besides the trophy, Shaifulreceived a certificate, a laptopcomputer and A$1,500 (RM4,400)from AMBC.

    Meanwhile, the patron of theaward, Sir Eric Neal, a formerSouth Australia governor and along and loyal friend of Malaysia,gave Shaiful a personal gift ofA$1,500. Runner-up in the awardswas Johor Baru-born KennyHwang, a final year Bachelor ofChemical Engineering student,also from the University of Ad-elaide. He received a certificateand A$1,000 (RM2,900).

    The third prize went to KotaKinabalus Ileana Celestine SoonYin Ying, a Bachelor of Financestudent at the University of SouthAustralia. She received a certifi-cate and A$750 (RM2,200).

    They are hard-working people.I have seen what they go throughto support me and my siblings.That has driven me to alwayswork hard and excel in my stud-ies so that my parents could havesomething to be proud of, saidShaiful, who went to Adelaide in2005 as a Public Service Depart-ment (JPA) scholar.

    He is looking forward to return-ing to Malaysia after completinghis degree and exploring theconcept of green architecture,taking advantage of Malaysiasabundance of natural resources.

    Meanwhile, Hwang was fol-lowing in the footsteps of his eldersister Merene, who won a similaraward in 2004. He plans to workin the engineering industry withinterest in oil and gas, mining andmanufacturing sectors.

    Soon also has an outstand-ing academic record. Last year,she was awarded the EconomicSociety of Australia (SA) prize formicroeconomics and received theChancellors Letters of Commen-dation in 2007 and 2008.
