How do I write one of these things?

• An effective thesis statement tells the reader specifically what you plan to write about. In a longer essay, your thesis statement generally comes at the end of the opening paragraph. It serves as a guide to keep you on track as you develop your writing.

Always refer back to your thesis if you are stuck or if you are questioning the track you are on in the paper.

The Process: A simple equation

• A thesis usually takes a stand or expresses a specific feeling, or feature of, your topic. This simple formula can be used to help you develop the statement:

A specific topic (Egypt’s magnificent Sphinx)+ a particular stand, feeling, or feature (is being

destroyed by pollution.)____________________________________= an effective thesis statement.

• Writing Assignment: Research report about a historical event

• Specific topic: The Monroe Doctrine• Thesis: The Monroe Doctrine (topic) benefited

England as much as it did the United States (particular stand).

• Writing assignment: Persuasive essay about a school problem

• Specific topic: Litter on the school grounds• Thesis: The excessive litter on the school

grounds (topic) reflects negatively on our school (particular feeling).

• Specific topic: “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote

• Thesis: “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote (topic) examines the bond between a young boy and his guardian (particular feature).

Be sure that your thesis statement: identifies a limited, specific topic, focuses on a particular feature or feeling

about the topic, is stated in one or more clear sentences,can be supported with convincing facts

and details, andmeets the requirements of the assignment.
