Module Maintenance
Forroutinemaintenance,dustandwipethemodulewithadampcloth.Ifnecessary,warmwaterormildwater-based
detergentcanbeused.Maintenancecanbeperformedonadaily,weeklyormonthlybasis,asrequiredbyoperating
environment.Immediatelyremoveanyspilledsubstanceusingthepropercleaningprocedureforthatspilltype.

Read Type Information
Therearethreemainreadtypesavailableasshowninthesetupmenus.
• Auto-Read – Themeterwilldisplaythemeasurementasitstabilizesandlockandholdthe
measurementwhenitisstable.(TheARiconwilllockonthescreen.)Oncethemeasurementislocked,
themeterwillautomaticallyexportthemeasurementtothedatalog,ifthedatalogisenabledin
thesetupmenu,andtoaprinterorcomputer,ifaprinterorcomputerisconnectedtothemeterand
enabledinthesetupmenu.Totakeanewmeasurement,pressmeasure (esc)/1.
• Timed – Themeterwillreadanddisplayameasurementatthesettimeintervalthatisprogrammed
bytheoperator.Therearetwooptions:
1. Bychecking/selectingthe"Interval"box,atthesettimeinterval,themeterwillautomatically
exportthemeasurementtothedatalog,ifthedatalogisenabledinthesetupmenu,andtoa
printerorcomputer,ifaprinterorcomputerisconnectedtothemeterandenabledinthesetup
menu.Ifselected,enterthetimeintervalvalueinahours:minutes:secondsformatusingthe
numeric keypad and press f3 (select) key.
2. Ifthe"Interval"boxisunchecked/notselected,asingletimedmeasurementwillbetaken.
Themeterwillapplythesamesavingandexportingdataconditionsaswiththesettime
intervaltorecordandexportdata,butlockafteronetimedintervalhasexpired.Press
measure (esc)/1toresetthecountdownclockandtakeanewreading.
• Continuous – The meter will continuously measure and update the display. This read type is useful
whenperforminganexperimentthatrequirescontinuousmeasurementstobetaken.Pressthe
log/print/0keytoexportthemeasurementtothedatalog,ifthedatalogisenabledinthesetup
menu,andtoaprinterorcomputer,ifaprinterorcomputerisconnectedtothemeterandenabledin
the setup.
Temperature Compensation Options
Theseoptionscanvaryaccordingtothemeasurementmode.
• Linear –Mostbeneficialforusewithsampleswithknownandlineartemperaturecoefficients.
• nLFn –Thisabbreviationisfornon-linearnaturalpurewater.Itworksbestforlowconductivitywater
suchaspurewatersandnaturalwaters(ground,wellorsurfacewaters).
• nLFu –Thisabbreviationisfornon-linearultrapurewaterthatcontainsnoairorcarbondioxide.
• EP –Temperature-compensationisturnedoffwhenthisisselected.Usingthisfeatureresultsin
warninglimitsbeingdisplayedwhenthepurewatersampleisovertheacceptablereadingforthat
temperatureperEPorUSPrequirements.

AllofthetemperaturemeasurementsettingsarefoundinTemperatureSetupmenuforeachmeasurement.
*Thisnumberwillchangetomatchthesetupmenuchannel.
Temperatureprobescanbesetupinthemeasurementmodeofthesampleyouaremeasuring.Ch-1ATCallowsthe
temperatureprobetobeusedinmorethanonechannelfortemperature-compensatedmeasurements,suchaswhen
apHelectrodeanda2-cellconductivitycellareinthesamemeasurementsample.TemperatureisacriticalpHand
conductivitymeasurementasthemeasurementvaluesrequireatemperaturecorrectiontodeterminethereference
value,often25ºCintheAmericaand20ºCinEurope.

Chapter 4 Conductivity Calibration
Theconductivitymeasurementmodesaredesignedforapplicationstodeterminethequalityofwaterinprocesses
wheredissolvedions(Salinityinpsu,practicalsalinityunits),purity(ResistanceinlowmicroSiemens/cm)anddissolved
saltsandothercompounds(TotalDissolvedSolids,TDSinppt/ppm).Eachmeasurementhasitsownunits.
Conductivityspansawidemeasurementrange,soautoranginginthelivereadingsmakesgatheringsampledata
easier.Asthereadingschange,theunitsdisplaybasedonthevaluechange.TheConductivitymeasurementsare
reportedbacktotheReferenceTemperatureselectedinsetup.
Uptosixconductivitystandardscanbeusedforcalibration.Alwaysusefreshstandardsandselectstandardsthat
arenearthesampleconductivity.Preparetheconductivitycellaccordingtotheinstructionsintheconductivitycell
userguide.
Note:Forautomaticcalibration,thenominalcellconstantoftheconductivitycellmustbeenteredinthesetup
menubeforethecalibrationisperformed.UsefreshThermoScientificOrionConductivityStandardswithvaluesof
100μS/cm,1413μS/cmand12.9mS/cmtouseautomaticcalibration.
1. PressCal (f1) tobeginConductivitycalibration,bracketingexpectedsamplerange.
Calibrationmaybe1to6points.
a.Usefreshstandards,rinsecellwithdeionizerwaterbeforeeachreading,blotdry.
b.MeasuretheConductivitystandardsfromtheleastconcentratedstandardtothemostconcentratedstandardforgreatestaccuracyandtopreventcarryover.
c.Followtheonscreenprompts.
d.Duringcalibration,pointscanbeeditedorretestedpriortoacceptance.Ifthereadingdoesnotstabilize,youmaypressOverride (f3)totakethereading.
e.Acceptthecalibrationwhenitiscompleted.
2. Thecalibrationinformationisnowdisplayedbystandardbeakersandconcentrationsusedinthe

Chapter 5 Temperature Calibration
TheATCtemperaturedisplayhasarelativeaccuracyof±0.1°C.Temperaturesensorsbuiltintotheconductivity
cellshavevaryingtemperatureaccuracies,usually±0.5°Cto±2°C.Use this function only if necessary. Since the
temperatureoffsetcalculatedduringthecalibrationisappliedtoallfuturetemperaturemeasurements,recalibrate
ifadifferentconductivitycellisused.Fortemperaturecalibration,theprobeneedstobeconnectedtothemeter
andthecalibrationsolutionshouldhaveaknown,stabletemperature.ItisrecommendedthattwoNIST-traceable
thermometersbeusedtomeasureandverifysolutiontemperature.

1. Rinsetheconductivitycellwithdeionizedwater,blotdrywithlint-freetissue.
2. Placeconductivitycellandstirrerinfirstsample.
3. IfthemeterisinAutoReadmode(meterdefault)pressmeasure (esc) (1)key.Ifthemeterisin
continuousortimedreadmode,themeterwillimmediatelystarttakingreadings.
4. IfinAutoReadmodeanddatalogisenabled(default),thereadingwillautomaticallybestoredwhen
the“AR”appears.Ifincontinuousreadmodeanddatalogisenabled,presslog/print (0) key to store

Data Storage Settings
Measurement Read Type
The measurement read type determines when the meter sends measurements to outputs as selected in the setup menu
and when properly connected to the meter. These are set individually for each channel. Measurement Read Type is set
perchannelinthesetupmenu.Pleasereferchapter3SetupMenusinthisreferenceguideformoreinformation.

Error Recommended Actions
Measurement is flashing9999andoverrangeorunderrange.
Measurementisoutsidetheallowablemeasurementrange.Checkelectrodeconnectionandsettingsinthesetupmenu.Cleantheelectrodeaccordingtotheelectrodeuserguideandrecalibratetheelectrodewithnewbuffersorstandards. Iftheerrorcontinues,performthemeterselftestinthediagnosticsmenu.
The measurement freezesandwill notchange.
ThemeterisinAutoReadmode.(ARiconappearssolidonthedisplay.)Press measure (esc)/1keytotakeanewreadingorgotosetuptochangethereadtype.
The meter does notrecognizetheconductivity standard duringcalibration.
Verify that the default cell constant was entered in the setup menu. The cell constant isusuallyprintedontheconductivityprobecable.Checkthatitisoneofthestandardvaluesautorecognizedbythemeter.Recalibratewithfreshstandard.
The measurement is out ofrangewhenitshouldbeinrange.
Checkthattheconductivityprobeisfullyimmersedinthesolution.Reviewthe settingsinthesetupmenu.(Somekeysettingswouldbecellconstantandtemperature-relatedsettings.)

Conductivity Temperature Compensation and Reference Temperature
TheOrionVERSASTARMeterwithConductivity/TemperatureModuleSystemshavetheabilitytouseatemperaturecompensationfeaturethatcalculatesanddisplaystheconductivitymeasurementsatareferencetemperatureof5°C, 10°C,15°C,20°Cor25°C.ThetemperaturecompensationcanbeturnedofforsettoLinear,nLFn(non-linearnatural non-degassedwater),nLFu(non-linearultrapuredegassedwater)orEP(temperaturecompensationoffandwarningisdisplayedifconductivityvaluesareoutsideEPrequirementsforultrapurewater).Thecloserthesampletemperatureis totheselectedreferencetemperature,themoreaccuratetheconductivitymeasurementwillbe,especiallyifthetemperature compensation coefficient is estimated or inaccurate. The conductivity of a solution with a specific electrolyte concentrationchangeswithtemperatureandthisrelationshipisdescribedbythetemperaturecoefficientofthesolution.Themeterhasadefaulttemperaturecoefficientof2.1percentchangeinconductivityperºC,whichisrepresentativeofmanyaqueoussamples.

Conductivity and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
TheOrionVERSASTARMeterwithConductivity/TemperatureModuleSystemsmeasureTDSasthetotalamountofdissolvedinorganicsinasolution.Thedissolvedinorganicscarryacurrentthatismeasuredbytheconductivityprobe.SincethereisadirectrelationshipbetweenconductivityandTDS,conductivityreadingsareusedtoestimatethepresenceofinorganics.TheusermustenteraTDSfactorbetween0.01and10mg/Linthesetupmenu.
ThestandardmethodofdeterminingTDSinvolvesevaporatingasampletodrynessat180ºCandweighingtheresidue.TheTDSfactoriscalculatedbytakingtheresidueweightanddividingitbythesampleconductivity.SubsequentconductivityreadingsaremultipliedbytheTDSfactortodeterminetheTDSvalueofthesample.
