Time-tested designs for today’s energy needs For over 70 years, we have been a market leader in power plant engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), as well as start-up and commissioning.

Whether in the Abu Dhabi desert or the subarctic of the Canadian Northwest Territories, we design and build customized thermal power plants to support our clients’ remote industrial facilities.

From high-capacity plants that power large-scale aluminum smelters, to reduced-footprint facilities that supply power to worker accommodations, we pair the latest technologies with world-class project execution, procurement and logistics capabilities to deliver outstanding plants regardless of location or climate.

Southcentral Power Project USA

In 2010, SNC-Lavalin was awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by Chugach Electric Association, Inc., Alaska’s largest electric utility, and Municipal Light & Power, for the Southcentral Power Project. Located in Anchorage, this 183-MW combined cycle power plant uses natural gas as the primary fuel for electricity production. It services south central Alaska, where the biggest concern among electricity providers is the region’s limited supply, particularly during the cold and dark winter months.

EMAL Phase I ProjectUnited Arab Emirates

Located on the Persian Gulf, EMAL Phase I is a 2,000-MW dual-fuel combined cycle power plant. It currently provides dedicated power to a new 750,000-tonne aluminum smelter, as well as a water management system that supplies the smelter’s utility and water needs. EMAL Phase I was a key component of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s economic and industrialization policy that focused on large projects designed to decrease dependence on oil exports.

Astoria II ProjectUSA

In 2008, SNC-Lavalin was awarded a contract for engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services for Astoria II, a 575-MW natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant. We managed plant construction on a limited footprint site in the densely populated New York City borough of Queens, using extensive off-site modular construction and a high level of logistical organization.

› With the total output of 1100 MW, the combined facility of Astoria I and II is the largest natural gas power plant in New York City.

St. Charles Energy CenterUSA

The CPV St. Charles Energy Center Project is a 725MW combined cycle plant in Waldorf, Maryland. The facility will generate enough electricity to power more than 650,000 homes. Using state-of-the-art technology to produce electricity efficiently and cleanly, St. Charles Energy Center helps meet the region’s growing demand for energy. The plant uses greywater to prevent a strain on local water resources.

› This project is one of the cleanest natural gas facilities ever built in the Maryland and Washington, DC area.

In 2014, Power Engineering Magazine named Southcentral Power Project the most efficient power plant in Alaska.
