Happy Fall! Hope the temperature falls as well. This has been a very hot summer, and a most unusual
year!! For the last six days, I have spent them at Vanderbilt Hospital, and it is good to get back home. My husband, Jim had big plans for the Fall as he retired June 30th but a fluke random test ordered by his urologist led to the discovery of Chondrosarcoma, Cancer of the cartilage. God is GREAT! They removed two ribs and created a prosthetic device to protect his lungs. Going in the Surgeon was not certain if the tumor was on the lung or just in his chest cavity, so good news. Because of his urologist he gained Thoracic Surgeon and a Cardiac Electro Physiologist! The message is clear, “get checkups regularly”.
Make Every Day An Adventure! Because we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. I know many of you
are also dealing with health issues or have loved ones who are. It is good to have friends in fce who serve as a great support team. Our thoughts and prayers are also extended to the family and Cross Roads fce friends of Mrs. Wilma Haney. Wilma was the Sumner County Council Secretary for the past five years and we miss her dearly. I always enjoyed her thoughtful planned devotions. A teacher is always a teacher even when they retire. Check out this newsletter for many upcoming events and opportunities! Thanks to everyone who attended the Operation Military Kids workshop, the camouflage remembrance dolls are looking so cute. It’s a great feeling to be able to provide these for our military families’ children. We hope to have many done for the Veterans Celebration in November. Let us know if you need a pattern or fabric to make some at home. Need a simple but delicious dessert for a fall potluck at church or club, try the Apple Dumplings recipe. It is easy, but delicious. Diane Vann, 4-H Program Assistant shared this recipe with us after her church ladies’ retreat. Fall is a great time to get moving and the Sumner County Health Committee is sponsoring, WALK ACROSS SUMNER COUNTY for the month of October. There will be lots of health events and opportunity for you and your family to get walking.
Count it all Joy!

1) CONNECT with nature. Strolling through a
garden, cuddling with a pet or hiking through the
woods can all benefit you.
2) INTERRUPT worries and other unhelpful
habits. The more you worry, the more it becomes
an ingrained habit. Redirecting your thoughts
allows you to use your mental energy in healthier
ways.
3) DO things for others. Random acts of kindness
generate positive energy – when you’re not
already doing too much, that is.
4) EXPRESS yourself. Find an outlet for your
feelings whether through conversation or writing
in a journal.
The bottom line: If your mood affects your work
or home life or if you’re engaging in addictive or
other self-destructive behaviors, refer to your
health plan or ask your health care provider for
help. TopHealth: September 2011

Read food labels. The details on the nutrition
facts panel can help you make healthy choices.
Key areas for cholesterol control: total fat and
each type of fat, cholesterol, and calories from fat
per serving. Monounsaturated fats – from nuts,
avocadoes and olive oil, for example – can help
improve your cholesterol profile.
Eat right. Limit saturated fat and cut out trans
fats. Focus on eating a plant-based diet. Choose
lean proteins and whole grains, and control
portions.
Move more. Exercise not only helps you maintain
a healthy weight, but can also raise your HDL
(“good”) cholesterol. Learn more about how
reaching your target heart rate can help your heart.
Aim for a healthy weight. If you are overweight,
losing weight may help improve your cholesterol
numbers too. Even a 5-to-10-pound reduction can
make a difference.
Quit smoking. You may raise your “good”
cholesterol by about 5 percent. Watch out for
secondhand smoke as well.
TopHealth takeaway: High cholesterol may be
scary, but there’s a good chance that you can lower
it into a healthier range. Start by making better
food choices, moving more, and working with your
doctor or health care provider.
Quick Take High cholesterol is considered a major risk factor for heart disease, the nation’s No. 1 killer. The National Institutes of health advises the following:
Total cholesterol < 200
LDL (“bad” cholesterol) < 100
HDL (“good” cholesterol”) > 40
Triglycerides < 150

5 Ways to Control Your Cholesterol
SEPTEMBER: Apples……. Delicious and crunchy apple fruit is one of the most
popular fruit favored by health conscious, fitness individuals who believe in “health is wealth”. This wonderful fruit is jam-packed with rich phyto-nutrients that in the true
sense are indispensable for optimal health.
The antioxidants in apples have many health promoting and disease prevention properties; thus justifying the adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Apples
are rich in antioxidant phyto-nutrients flavonoids, polyphenols, C, B complex, potassium, phosphorus and calcium. The total measured anti-oxidant strength
(ORAC value) of 100 g apple fruit is 5900 TE. The important flavonoids in apples are quercetin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B2. Apples are also good in tartaric acid that gives tart flavor to them. These compounds help the body protect from deleterious
effects of free radicals.
Apple Dumplings
2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored 1 cup butter 2 (10 oz.) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough 1 ½ cups white sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (12 fluid oz.) can or bottle 7 Up, Sprite, or Mountain Dew
Preheat oven to 350ᵒ and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Cut each apple into 8 wedges. Cut each apple into 8 wedges and set aside. Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles. Roll each apple wedge in crescent roll dough starting at the smallest end. Pinch to seal and Place in the baking dish. Melt butter in a small saucepan and stir in the sugar and vanilla. Pour over the apple dumplings. Pour the soda over the dumplings and sprinkle cinnamon on top.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown. Serve with ice cream, and spoon some of the sweet sauces from the pan over the top.
