LETTERS

Dear Mr. Martin,I received my Martin D-7 Roger

McGuinn Special Edition guitar theother day, and I must say it is anabsolute masterpiece of quality andcraftsmanship. The finish is flawless andthe action is magnificent, but most ofall, the tone imparted by the 7th stringis enchanting. The added string gives ita rich, full sound with mandolin-likeovertones that make it absolutelyperfect for the Highland Guitar soundI’ve been searching for. I have beenplaying it every day since it arrived, andmy two young boys love it when I playclassical pieces to them beforebedtime. The enchanting sound lullsthem to sleep and gives my wife amuch needed break!

Staff Sergeant Jeff DingusHistorically, Martin guitars have been played by

American soldiers on battlefields since the Civil War days(both sides), as well as in WW I & WW II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Todaywe know of more than 265 Martin guitars owned and playedby American troops throughout the Middle East andAfghanistan. The Martin LXM is a popular choice because itis relatively impervious to humidit y (or lack thereof),compact and light, easy to play and, best of all, it soundsterrific. Here’s a recent gallery of gallant Martin players:

Air Force Staff Sergeant Jeff Dingus is currently serving atour in Iraq and says that receiving his Martin LXM hasdefinitely boosted his morale. We don’t know which modelMartin Jeff plays stateside, but we do know that his newLittle Martin will remain a permanent part of his collectionwhen his tour is over. Jeff was so pleased with getting hisguitar that he documented its arrival below!

High Flying PlayersWhen Marine Corps Captain Morgan Dodd isn’t flying

combat missions in Iraq, he spends his time practicing on hisnew Martin LXM guitar. “We don’t get much to look forwardto in our down time over here,” says Captain Dodd, “but Ialways look forward to the end of my shift so I can gopractice my guitar. I’m having a great time learning how toplay.”

Captain Dodd caught the guitar “bug” from fellowMarine pilot Captain James Trotter, who also plays a MartinLXM. “Captain Trotter got me started, but I’m on my ownnow. My wife and I are expecting our first child in Januaryand I don’t have the singing voice to sing him to sleep, so Iam hoping to learn some songs on guitar.” Both pilots arepictured below on their Grumman EA-6B Prowler attack jet.Recently Captain Trotter flew an American flag on a combatmission dedicated to the employees of Martin which he willbe sending soon. We’re honored to be given this flag andwill fly it proudly here in Nazareth.

MARTIN STORIESMARTIN STORIES

Color Them HappyStudents in the guitar class at the Calvary Chapel Rio Grande Valley in Belen, New Mexico, have selected Little Martins as

their guitars of choice. It’s the perfect guitar for the discerning child virtuoso: easy to play, made of durable, playground-resistant HPL (high pressure wood laminate) with a highly resonant modified X-braced top and, best of all, these kids got someof the limited run colors! According to Worship Pastor Kirk Triplett, “The guitars are awesome, and the kids are learning – aslong as they practice!“ And how do they sound? Angelic, of course.

Julian LageJulian Lage has come a long way from the eight-year-old guitar-playing prodigy who was the focus of the Oscar-nominated

documentary, “Jules At Eight.” He has played on two Grammy-nominated albums by Taylor Eigsti and Nnenna Freelon, and hewas jazz legend Gary Burton’s “latest guitar find” in his Next Generation Quintet, placing him in good company with Burton’sother guitar discoveries – Pat Metheny, John Scofield and Larry Coryell. For Julian’s debut album “Sounding Point,” he hascreated music that incorporates multiple influences. The Grammy-winning production team included renowned classicalproducer Steve Epstein and engineer Richard King. Known for their work on a myriad of legendary classical albums, they havealso created such “crossover” masterpieces as the award winning Yo Yo Ma/Edgar Meyer collaboration “Appalachian Journey,”“Corea Concerto” by Chick Corea, and Billy Joel’s “Music For Solo Piano.” “Sounding Point” features the inspired cast of TupacMantilla (drums, percussion), Aristedes Rivas (cello), Ben Roseth (sax) and Jorge Roeder (bass). Long-time collaborator TaylorEigsti and special guests Béla Fleck and Chris Thile are also featured on the album that was released in March 2009 on EmArcy(an imprint of Universal Records).

Vintage BalianDr. Ed Balian loves old stuff (excuse us, vintage stuff) –

especially his immaculate ‘57 Chevy Bel-Air and his cherished 1927Martin 00-17. But what he loves most of all is rock n’ roll – TheBeatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi and Elvis and way beyond. He and his co-founding partner Ray George still write and play inThe George-Edwards Group. With the Drag City Records reissue oftheir 1977 “38-38,” the group is heard worldwide. Must be thatvintage Martin vibe.

A Guitar Survives A Fire TragedyOn Valentine’s Day of this year, Robert Ellement of Dunster,

British Columbia, lost his life when his home caught fire. Whileneighbors did all they could to extinguish the blaze, the house andall of its contents burned to the ground – except for Robert’sproudest possession, his Martin D-28. This discovery was made byRobert’s former wife Lelani Arris and his 11-year old daughterRebecca, as they visited the house for the first time after the fire.“Walking up the driveway, the first thing both of us saw wasRobert’s Martin guitar lying on a snowbank,“ Lelani recalls.“Someone fighting the fire saw it and pulled it out. Robert had thatguitar long before I met him, and Rebecca also knew it was one ofhis ‘babies’ along with her.” The day after finding the guitar wasRebecca’s 12th birthday, and having her dad’s guitar, she said, wasthe an emotional and meaningful birthday present.

Homage to Merle TravisTom Isenhour of Salisbury, North Carolina, is not just a

Merle Travis collector. He is a SERIOUS Merle Travis collectorwhose vast collection includes the life-size Merle Travis waxfigure above (wearing one of Merle’s original 1950s Nudiesuits) and many other Merle Travis treasures. Tom’s also aSERIOUS Martin collector, owning more than 25 MartinDreadnoughts, from a 1934 D-28 to a recent Custom ShopD-45 Sunburst, to virtually every other Martin Dreadnoughtmodel inbetween. While Tom’s wife Kathy is not a Merle orMartin collector, she knows how to buy the perfect Christmasgift for someone like Tom – a brand new D-28M Merle TravisSignature Model. Seems Kathy found Tom’s copy of theSounding Board from June 2008 that featured the D-28MMerle Travis, so she secretly contacted Martin to inquire aboutbuying one in time for Christmas. Martin sent her to the nearestMartin dealer in North Carolina, and soon a D-28M MerleTravis, #10 of 100, arrived at the Isenhour home and was putunder the tree. “I knew what a Martin shipping box lookedlike,” Tom says, “but I could never imagine what Martin guitarwould be in there – or if even there was a guitar in the box. Aguitar from my wife would have been the last thing I wouldhave expected.” Not surprisingly, Tom was more than pleasedwith Kathy’s gift. "This signature model is a very close replica ofthe original one. It has all it needs to make even Merle proud toown another one if he were alive today.” Tom thought it wouldbe fun to display his D-28M with Merle’s wax figure. “I made afew photos of Merle being reunited with his beloved customD-28,” Tom says wryly. “And thanks to Martin for another greatguitar to add to my collection!”

D-18 SS Short Scale DreadnoughtSome guitar models are naturals: so simple in concept, so

effortless in execution and so pleasing as instruments, it ishard to believe they haven’t been around forever. Such is thecase with the new Martin D-18 SS Special Edition – the firstshort scale 6-string Dreadnought Martin has ever offered. Theshort 24.9” scale yields slightly lower string tension allowingfor easier fretting. The slightly shorter distance between fretsmakes elongated chords and string-bends easier to play. Withthe exception of the short scale, the Martin D-18 SS SpecialEdition features the same traditional 14-fret specifications andpremium solid tonewoods as the Martin D-18V.

The Martin Marquis Series was developed to provide amore affordable version of our Golden Era® guitars whichreplicate select pre-war Martin models built in the 1930s. Todo this, East Indian or Madagascar rosewood is used in placeof Brazilian rosewood which is traditionally used in Golden Erarecreations. This allows us to furnish Golden Era style guitarsto Martin distributors in overseas markets where the CITEStreaty would normally prohibit such distribution. Thus, thesenew Marquis D-18 and 000-18 models all feature beautifulMadagascar rosewood headplates (which closely resemblesBrazilian rosewood but is not restricted by the CITES treaty).Otherwise, they offer virtually identical features as theirGolden Era counterparts.

The D-18 Marquis and 000-18 Marquis are trulyreminiscent of vintage 1930s era Martins, in both look, toneand “handmade” feel. Back and sides are crafted of solidmahogany; tops are Adirondack red spruce with scalloped5/16” Adirondack braces. The D-18 has a 25.4” scale, andthe 000-18 has a 24.9” scale, and both feature 1 3/4”modif ied V necks of genuine mahogany with ebonyfingerboard and “Old Style 18” position markers. The ‘30sstyle belly bridge is ebony with long fossilized saddle (as isthe nut). Other vintage features include C. F. Martinheadstock stamp, tortoise brown binding and pickguard andopen back Gotoh tuners. Both models are available in agingtoned lacquer or 1935 sunburst finish.

Has i t real ly been a decade s ince Mar t inlaunched the 00-18SH Steve Howe Limited Edition?Apparently so: inspired by Howe’s beloved 1953Martin 00-18, the Martin 00-18SH Limited Edition –the f irst spruce and mahogany 00 Martin to beproduced in several years - was introduced early in1999, and Martin sold the entire edition of 250guitars.

As for famed guitarist Steve Howe himself, he hasbeen incredibly busy since the Martin 00-18SH LimitedEdition debuted. In the last decade alone, he hasreleased twelve solo or small combo albums, the latterwith either Remedy or the Steve Howe Trio; rejoinedYes in 1995 to record five albums – Keys to Ascension,Keys to Ascension Two, Open Your Eyes, The Ladderand Magnification - and tour North America (threetimes), Europe (twice) and the Far East; reunited withthe original members of Asia in 2006 and 2007 to tourNorth America and Japan, and record two albums:Fantasia: Live in Tokyo and Phoenix; and joined forceswith Yes compatriots Alan White and Chris Squire for aNorth American tour in 2008 and early 2009. His plansfor the rest of 2009 include a major tour with Asia thatincludes Russia, Europe and the United Kingdom. Forsomeone already legendary for his guitar work with Yesin the 1970s and Asia in the 1980s, only oneconclusion can be made: the man’s passion forplaying – whether acoustic or electric – isas strong as ever.

“You really can’t go wrong witha Martin, an old one or a new one,”Howe says. One Martin that hasbeen a constant on his guitar rackin recent years is an early 1980sMC-28. Martin made only about1,100 of this unusual model between1981 and 1996, but i ts grandaudi tor ium cutaway body, ovalsoundhole, 22 fret fingerboard andsuperb “live” tone so won overHowe that he suggested it bethe starting point for a newSteve Howe Special Edition. With the addition of somepersonal touches and a bitof abalone pearl to give itstage presence, the MC-38Steve Howe Special Edition– the first Martin to havean oval soundhole in morethan a decade - was born.

The MC-38 Steve HoweSpecial Edit ion retains theEast Indian rosewood of i tsinspi rat ion and adds a top ofCarpathian spruce, which combines

David Crosby’s Martin 12-string guitar ranks amongthe most famous “modified” Martins ever. Back in theearly 1960s, when Crosby first wanted a 12-stringguitar, Martin wasn’t making them, so he had JonLundberg’s guitar shop in Berkeley convert his D-18into a 12-string. Lundberg replaced the neck with a 12-fret, long (25.4-inches) scale Macassar ebony neck andmoved the bridge lower on the body of the guitar (theold bridge holes were covered with a special pickguard). He also added a special six-string bridge, with two“ramps” at each bridge hole to space the strings and withthe G strings reversed so the notes would resound“correctly” (i.e., trebles first) on his strumming upstrokes.

In the 40-plus years since the guitar was modified, DavidCrosby has lived a rock & roll life: success with the Byrds andas a solo artist, mega-success with Crosby, Stills & Nash andCrosby, Stills, Nash & Young, side projects with GrahamNash and CPR (which includes his son James Raymond) anda long tradition of political activism. Through the years healso has faced and overcame an impressive list of personalchallenges. He has inspired a signature Martin guitar, 2002’sD-18DC David Crosby Signature Edition, of which 250 weremade (details on the D-18DC and a synopsis of Crosby’s lifecan be found in Volume 12 of The Sounding Board atwww.martinguitar.com) and also joined bandmates StephenStills and Graham Nash in developing the Martin CSNSpecial Edition in tribute to their late manager, GerryTolman.

Crosby’s unique 12-string has led a lifenearly as eventful as its owner. It wasstolen while he was staying at atreatment center in Pennsylvania andsubsequently sold. A chance discoveryby Crosby’s wife eventually gaveCrosby the name of the purchaser, butthat individual refused to even discussrelinquishing the guitar. Years later,Graham Nash quietly took up the quest;he discovered the man’s address, and –through a representative who handlednegotiations in person – made himan offer he couldn’t refuse. Theguitar was returned to Crosbyduring a birthday celebration, tohis complete surprise.

Now healthy, sober and fit,his career in recent years hasbeen similarly charmed. In2004, he and Graham Nashreleased Crosby Nash, a two-disc CD set, to very strongreviews, and the duo touredEurope the following year. Crosby,Stills, Nash & Young crossed theUnited States with the “Freedom ofSpeech” Tour in 2006, which coincided

with the release of Crosby’s career-spanning three-disc box set Voyage and the publication of hissecond autobiography, Since Then: How I SurvivedEverything and Lived to Tell About It. CSNYreleased Déjà vu Live as both a CD and DVD (asDéjà vu) in 2008. This year’s plans include releaseof Crosby, Stills & Nash Demos, a CD of theirearliest work together, Crosby, Stills and Nash’sinduction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and aCS&N concert tour that will hit the NortheasternUnited States, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany,France and Holland.

Though Martin has been building 12-stringguitars since the late 1960s, it has never built onelike David Crosby’s long-scale, 12-fret, squareshouldered 12-string – until now. Designed to bear afamily resemblance to the D-18DC Signature Editionand built to be tuned a whole step below standardpitch (i.e., D-G-C-F-A-D), the new Martin D-12 DavidCrosby Special Edition guitar is a unique andimpressive instrument.

The D-12 David Crosby Special Edition featurespremium solid tonewoods throughout. Back andsides of rare quilted mahogany match those of theD-18DC Signature Edition. The Carpathian sprucetop combines with unscalloped braces in thestandard position for impressive power and richness.

The 1 7/8” (at the nut) low profile neck iscarved from genuine mahogany andstained black to match the Macassarebony of the original.

The D-12 David Crosby SpecialEdition shares many of the simpleappointments of its six-string oldersibling. The Style 45 rosette featuresa ring of brilliant blue Paua shell.Tortoise color binding encircles thetop, back and sides, and provide ahandsome accent to the Style 18black/white (five layers) fine line toppurfling and black/white fine linesides and back purf l ing. Theendpiece and heelcap, alsotortoise colored material, arelikewise highlighted byblack/white fine line inlays. The back is bisected bycolor ful St yle 45 mosaicpurfling, bordered on eachside by black wood f iberinlay. The similarity extends to

(without “Est. 1833”) shelters a small schooner – like the oneCrosby has owned for decades – inlaid in mother of pearl. Itis equipped with Grover™ mini chrome tuners with ebonybuttons.

Per Crosby’s request, the African black ebonyfingerboard is fretted with jumbo frets. Abalone pearl dotposition markers at the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th and 15th frets leadto David Crosby’s signature inlaid between the 16th and 17thfrets; the fingerboard terminates in a radius that follows thesoundhole arc, resulting in a partial 18th fret.

Like the original, each of the six string holes in the ebonybelly bridge is carefully slotted to handle two strings, and theG strings are strung in reverse order. Both the drop-in saddleand nut are crafted from bone. A polished and beveledtortoise color pickguard, and ebony bridge and end pins withpearl dots, complete its classic, elegant style, which isemphasized by the vintage-inspired deep amber hue of thetop and Martin’s traditional polished gloss lacquer finish.

Crosby’s legendary 12-string Martin started out as a D-18 butwas given a long scale 12-fret neck that pushed the bridge tothe center of the top. The resulting crystalline tone justifiedthe alteration and provided the inspiration for this uniqueedition. Note that the odd pickguard covered the old bridgelocation, and two strings occupy each bridge pin hole.

Among guitar aficionados, Woody Mann isconsidered a modern master. While the blues arehis touchstone, he seems to draw inspiration fromevery direction, blending a myriad of influences withease and grace.

Pioneering fingerstyle legend John Fahey said itwell: “You can hear classical, jazz and bluesapproaches somehow converging into a singlesparkling sound – a sound completely his own. Woodytakes a fresh approach to his blues recreations, and hisown compositions defy category. If there was a categorysimply called ‘great music,’ Woody would belong there.”

Woody received his first musical schooling in theliving room of Reverend Gary Davis, the legendary blues, gospel and ragtime guitarist. He soon went on to performwith bluesmen Son House and Bukka White, British greatJo Anne Kelly, and fingerstyle wizard John Fahey. Duringthis time, after studying at New York’s Juilliard School,Woody began a period of intensive lessons with thedazzling jazz composer and pianist Lennie Tristano.

Since then, Mann has pursued a rich and diversecareer that has included playing with jazz great AttilaZoller, accompanying songwriter Dory Previn and givingguitar lessons to recording artist Paul Simon. He hasperformed in over 15 countries and recorded 11 albumsranging from 1994’s “Stories” to 2008’s “Road Trip,” aswell as collaborations with blues legends Son House andJohn Cephas.

Mann’s reach as a teacher andwriter has been just as sweeping. Hehas been a faculty member at theNew School in New York and hasconducted workshops and masterclasses throughout the world. Hefounded International GuitarSeminars and schooled countlessguitarists through his many instructionalbooks and DVDs, including “The Art ofAcoustic Blues Guitar” DVD series,“The Complete Robert Johnson,”and “Lisboa – the Guitar ofWoody Mann,” a collection ofhis original compositions. Fewguitarists have been sogenerous in sharing theirknowledge.

Woody’s eclectic musicdemands much from theguitar he plays: power, balance, clarity, a “fast” neckand access to the upper frets. His experience with a range ofguitars over the years providedthe foundation for developingspecifications for his namesake Martin

Custom Edition guitar, but we at Martin were surprised– and impressed - by his “outside the box” ideas for theMartin MC-18 Woody Mann Custom Edition guitar.“I was looking for a guitar with a fast attack that

projects without compressing when played with aharder touch,” said Mann. “Since I use various pickingtechniques, it should have a balanced sound, from lowto high, with a clarity that responds easily to dynamics.Basically, I need a guitar that projects and offers a cleanpalette to explore a variety of tones, dynamics andtextures for various musical styles. This is that guitar!”

The Martin MC-18 Woody Mann Custom Editionstarts with the M body style, which combines GrandAuditorium 16” width at the lower bout with 0004 1/8” depth for a big, clear voice. An elegantlyrounded Venetian cutaway provides unfettered accessto the upper frets. A rare Adirondack spruce top, scalloped and forward-shifted 1/4” top braces andgenuine mahogany back and sides join forces to givethe guitar warmth and impressive dynamic range.

But the feature that really sets the MC-18 WoodyMann Custom Edition apart is its oversized 4 5/16”soundhole. As with Martin’s HD-16RLSH and theD-28CW Clarence White Special Edition, the largesoundhole enhances mid-range and treble projection. The MC-18 Woody Mann is the first Martin CustomEdition guitar in this body style to include this feature.

A 1 3/4” (at the nut) low profile satin finish neckoffers both playing comfort and plenty of room on the

fingerboard. A straight (rather than belly)black ebony bridge with spacious2 5/16” string spacing enhancesresponsiveness and is matched by ablack ebony fingerboard.

Woody Mann has specif iedbeautiful, understated appointments forhis Custom Edition guitar. An Old Style18 wood fiber rosette with two (due tothe enlarged soundhole) ringscomplements East Indian rosewoodbinding and alternating black/whitef ine line (f ive on the top andthree on the back) purfling. Thebinding is matched by an EastIndian rosewood heelcap andendpiece, the latter framed byblack/white fine line inlay. Apolished gloss Madagascarrosewood headplate highlightsthe familiar Martin Old Styledecal logo and premium nickelWaverly™ tuners with ebony

Dan Tyminski’s attention to detail on his namesakeMartin reflects a life devoted to performing bluegrassand old-time music. He began learning guitar andmandolin at the age of six and played in a localbluegrass band while still in high school. In 1989, atbarely 21 years old, he joined the Lonesome RiverBand. Except for a short hiatus in 1992-1993, he stayedwith the band for five years, during which LonesomeRiver Band emerged as one of the most influential actsin modern bluegrass.

Although he briefly joined Alison Krauss andUnion Station (sometimes abbreviated to the acronymAKUS) during the previously mentioned hiatus,Tyminski signed on full-time as guitarist, lead andharmony vocalist and occasional mandolinist in 1994.As a member of AKUS, he contributed to a string ofcommercially successful – and usually Grammy-winning – albums, including So Long So Wrong, New

Favorite, Live and Lonely Runs Both Ways. Healso played on Krauss’ solo albums ForgetAbout It and A Hundred Miles or More:A Collection, plus her multi-platinumcompilation Now That I’ve FoundYou.

His first foray away from AKUScame in 2000 when he released hisfirst solo album, Carry Me Across theMountain, and toured with the firstincarnation of the Dan Tyminski Band. The year also marked release of theCoen Brothers’ hugely popular film OBrother, Where Art Thou? in whichTyminski supplied the singing voicefor George Clooney. Featuringtwo Tyminski renditions of “Manof Constant Sorrow,” thesoundtrack album sold animpressive seven mill ioncopies and won five GrammyAwards in 2002, includingAlbum of the Year.Tyminski was invited by Eric

Dan Tyminski’s career has taken him fromVermont to Nashville and even included a side trip toHollywood, but his music remains firmly rooted in thehills of southern Appalachia. He ranks as one of themost recognizable and popular musicians inbluegrass; his impressive instrumental chops andsingular voice are key components of Alison Kraussand Union Station, his stand-in singing and guitarplaying for George Clooney in the movie O Brother,Where Art Thou? are credited for giving old time music amajor boost, and his own Dan Tyminski Band has enabledhim to take center stage. Quiet and unassuming away fromthe spotlight, Tyminski lets his music speak for him with apassion that is undeniable.

For many years, Dan’s primary guitar has been a well-worn 1946 Martin D-28. However, his concerns aboutcontinuing to take his “go-to” instrument on the road andhis desire for a Dreadnought designed to meet his personalneeds brought Dan and the Martin Guitar Companytogether to create the new Martin D-28 Dan TyminskiCustom Edition.

“I am very excited to be involved with Martin,”Tyminski noted. “This is surely the biggest honor of mycareer.”

The Martin D-28 Dan Tyminski Custom Editionshowcases all the power and panache that have madeMartin Dreadnoughts the definitive bluegrassguitar. Back and sides of East Indianrosewood combine with a top ofAdirondack spruce for warm, ringingtone, impressive projection andextraordinary headroom. A native of Arizona, Marty Robbins becameinterested in music while serving in the United StatesNavy during World War II. Stationed in the SolomonIslands, he learned to play guitar, started writing songsand began a lifelong love of Hawaiian music. Backhome in Arizona after the war, he began playingguitar in a local band and was eventually hired toperform on the radio, a job that led to his hosting a15-minute live television show, “Country Caravan.”His big break came when “Little” Jimmy Dickensmade a guest appearance on the show and was soimpressed by the host, he lobbied his label into

signing Marty.Eschewing the songs his label offered

him, Robbins began writing and recordinghis own. The third single, “I’ll Go onAlone,” proved to be his breakoutcountry hit. It resulted in his f irstappearance at the Grand Ole Opry in1953 and Opry membership thefollowing year. He would consider theOpry his “home” stage for the rest of hiscareer.

A string of country hits followed. In1957 he released “A White Sports Coat,”which topped the country charts andwas No. 2 on the pop charts. Thatsame year he recorded ”Song of theIslands,” an album of Hawaiianlove songs. In 1958, he turned hisattention to western and cowboysongs, releasing Gunf ighterBallads and Trail Songs, whichincluded a ballad he wrote called“El Paso.” Considered too longfor radio airplay, “El Paso” hit No.1 on the pop and country chartsand won the first Grammy Award

for a country song. In 1960, he alsobecame the first country artist to perform

Rockabilly, pop, Hawaiian, standards andespecially country: Marty Robbins could sing themall. Most people remember “A White Sports Coat”and “El Paso,” his biggest hits on the popular charts, but for nearly 30 years he was a huge country star, with 16 chart-topping and 42 “Top 10” country hits, and a slew of top-selling albums. He also was asuperb songwriter, solid guitarist, fine actor andincredibly charismatic performer. In every sense of theword, he was unique; the passage of years since hisdeath in 1982 have only deepened respect for this trulyone-of-a-kind entertainer.

As with nearly every aspect of his music career,Robbins’ acoustic guitar of choice was anything butordinary. Instead of something big and flashy, he oftenplayed a Martin 5-18, a tiny mahogany “terz” guitar, sonamed because it was designed to be tuned a minor 3rd(three steps) higher than standard. His appearances withthe diminutive Martin guitar beginning in the 1950s, at theGrand Ole Opry and in concert, caused a spike in theproduction of that model that lasted for nearly a decade. The Martin Guitar Company stopped making the 5-18 in1989, and though it has produced other Size 5 guitars inrecent years, namely the Claire’s Guitar (Brazilianrosewood) and Claire 2 (flamed maple) Limited Editions, and the Mini Martin (East Indian rosewood) SpecialEdition, it has not offered one in mahogany for 20 years.Martin is pleased to bring it back with theintroduction of the 5-18 Marty RobbinsCustom Edition.

While the 5-18 Mart y RobbinsCustom Edition conforms to themodel’s 12-fret (to the body) design, small dimensions (11 1/4” across thelower bout) and short (21.4”) scalelength, distinctive tonewoods andappointments abound. A rareAdirondack spruce top with 1/4”unscalloped braces is matched to thetraditional genuine mahogany backand sides for bright, clear tone andimpressive dynamics. The “low oval”genuine mahogany neck sports apolished Madagascar rosewoodheadplate which highlights thelarge Old St yle gold Martindecal and Gotoh™ nickel opengeared tuners with butterbeanknobs.

To honor “El Paso” and hisother Texas-themed records, theblack ebony fingerboard featuresa position marker in the shape ofTexas at the 5th fret and a lone star atthe 7th fret, plus the standard Old Style

Marty Robbins rarely performed without one of his manyMartin small 5-18 Parlor or ”Terz” guitars like the oneseen above, in later years, with the unusual pickguard.

in Las Vegas. While continuing to produce country hits through the

1960s and 1970s, including “Devil Woman,” ”River ofDarkness,” “My Woman, My Woman, My Wife” and“Among My Souvenirs,” and earning a second GrammyAward along the way, Robbins expanded his range bygetting into the movies, both as an actor and soundtrackcontributor. His acting career began in 1957 with Badgeof Marshall Brennan, while his soundtrack work began in1959 with Hanging Tree. He appeared in eight moviesand had music in countless more, culminating both with asmall role and two songs in the Clint Eastwood movieHonky Tonk Man. He played as hard as he worked andbegan driving stock cars on the NASCAR circuit in 1966,an avocation he would continue for the rest of his life.

A heart attack and heart bypass surgery (thenexperimental) in the late 1960s barely slowed him, but asecond heart attack in 1981 did. In October of 1982, hewas inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame andaccepted the award in person, but he suffered a thirdheart attack less than two months later and died onDecember 8th, 1982.

Roy Rogers 1930 OM-45 DeluxeBrings $554,500 at Christies AuctionAn anonymous bidder acquired the “King of Cowboys,”

Roy Rogers’ infamous OM-45 Deluxe Martin Guitar, one of therarest and most coveted. $554,500 was the winning bid duringan auction held at Christies in New York on April 3, 2009. Theguitar was put up for auction by The Roy Rogers-Dale EvansMuseum in Branson, Missouri.

Originally purchased, used, for $30 at a California pawnshop in 1933 by a young and unknown musician by the nameof Leonard Slye, this guitar was the very first OM-45 Deluxemodel guitar Martin produced in 1930 (#1 of 15 total). It is theprototype for one of Martin's rarest, most beautiful and highlycoveted models. Slye, years later, would go on to becomecowboy legend Roy Rogers, never knowing the historicalsignificance of the guitar. Over time, the Martin OM-45Deluxe would become synonymous with the Rogers stage andfilm persona.

Sold brand new for $225 in 1930, this guitar was Martin’smost expensive model to date. Its serial number, #42125,would years later reveal that this particular guitar has epichistorical significance beyond its already documented celebritystatus. How fitting that this unique OM was, unknown to itsowner or anyone else, already the stuff of legend even beforethat fateful pawnshop encounter with a future western idol. Atwo-time inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame,Rogers passed away in 1998.

The River Bottom Rhythm BandThe River Bottom Rhythm Band is a bluegrass

band from the small town in Rowan County,Kentucky. The image above is from the photoshoot for their CD cover. The Martin that guitaristMichael Atkins is holding is a 1937 D-18 that hisfather first purchased in a music store in Ashland,Kentucky. Walter (Michael’s father) had his owncountry singing group at the time, and he walkedinto a store looking to purchase a ”Gibson Jumbo”as he states it. After looking at the Jumbo, the salesperson handed him the D-18 to look at. Hestrummed it one time and exclaimed, ”I’ll take thisone!” Walter is 98 years old now and he continuesto say: ”Martin Guitar is still the only one to buy.”Walter gave the guitar to Michael when he was 12,and Michael recently presented it to his 16 yearold son Joshua. That very guitar was used on theirCD; and everywhere they take it, the question isalways the same, ”Do you want to sell it?” Theanswer will always be the same, ”NO!”

Below are our three proud generations ofMartin fans for life: Walter Atkins (center), age 98,holding the 1937 D-18; Michael Atkins, age 52,holding a 1985 HD-35; and Joshua Atkins, age 16,holding his 2008 D-28.

John Martyn1948-2009

John Martyn was one of the mostrevered and innovative singer-songwritersof his generation; his music – a mix ofblues, folk and funk – influenced artistsas varied as U2 and Eric Clapton. Manyof his albums, especially Solid Air (1973),are regarded as classics. He began toexperiment with electronic ef fects, notably a tape device known as theEchoplex which provided his signaturesound.

His cantankerous behavior wasfamous, and age did not appear tomellow him or diminish his interest inexpanding the horizons of music andmaking musical boundaries redundant.

Early on in his career, he provedhimself one of the most brilliant acousticguitarists of his generation, but he wasnever content to rest on his laurels, taking his guitar playing into constantlynew directions, even at the cost of hiscommercial appeal.

A longtime Martin guitar player,Westside of Glasgow, UK (a MartinDistributor) honored him with a JohnMartyn Custom Signature Edition guitarin 2008. (Telegraph.co.uk)
