I have met people over the years that started running bythemselves and somehow maintained their training, by themselves, through their first marathon without missing a beat. In fact, I have met a few peo-ple that did this amazing feat and never knew that there were organized runningand track clubs that they could meet up with for support. I find this amazing, and alittle unusual.

Nothing gets a person out the door for a run like a commitment to a running part-ner to meet and run. One of the things that the Striders do best is to make sure thatrunners who contact us get connected with the right group and get the support andencouragement that they need. For all of you who take the time out to help some-one get their running groove on, you represent the spirit of this club and you shouldgive yourself a big pat on the back. We have so many members that give back thatI would like to take the opportunity to say thank you. It is this spirit that attracted meto the Striders in the first place and it is that spirit that makes me proud to representthis running family.

I throw this out from time to time, but I want everyone to think of a runner that youhaven’t seen in a while and reach out. That phone call or email might be what bringsthem out of a slump or a work-life rut that has kept them from running. I will do thesame. Let’s give them a call so they can get back in the groove before it gets too hot!

See you on the road!

Board of Directors’ Minutes 3/11/2008The meeting was called to order by Dave Bokros at 7:09 p.m. Directors

present were Dave Bokros, Vicky Connell, Gary Hallett, Glenn Hanna, KellieHoward, Kim Lundy, Keith Poythress, Mike Mayse, Denise Metzgar, John Met-zgar, John Steinburg, Mary Ann Steinburg, James Vavrina, and Kay Womack.

Minutes: No changes to the February minutes.Treasurer’s Report: Gary Hallett gave the Treasurer’s report in George

Hoskins absence. Gary noted that we started the month of February with$11,519 in our checking account and ended the month with $7,718. We cur-rent have $13,123 in our race accounts and $42,619 in our CD accounts. Thetreasurer’s report was filed as presented.

Proposed Run To The Sun Race Budget: Kay Womack presented theRTTS race budget. She’s estimating around 500 entries this year. She re-viewed some of the sponsors that have committed for total sponsorship of$5,500. It was noted that there was lower race attendance last year becauseof multiple activities happening on the same weekend. Kay also said we don’thave money from Sponsors for the schools in the Fun Run this year. KeithPoythress stated that we could always come up with the money ourselves forthis program. Kelly Howard seemed to think it would be easy for us to get themoney donated from a corporate sponsorship. Some discussion ensued. GaryHallet made a motion that we use $1000 out of the RTTS race profits to coverthe competition among the Schools in the Fun Run. Mike Mayse secondedthe motion and it was passed unanimously. The race budget was also ap-proved unanimously.

Web Site Proposal: Dave Bokros asked if everyone had a chance toview the proposed Strider website and whether we had any questions. Healso stated that Kristin Hughes has volunteered Continued on page 18

Frank was a typical part of the WWIIGreatest Generation and did a lot ofthings that even I had a hard time glean-ing, although we were best friends forforty-two years. We joined The FloridaStriders in their fifth year in 1983 andeventually served several years on itsBoard of Directors and had managementroles in several of the runs. The secondRun-to-the-Sun (Ken Pekie directed thefirst) Hog Jog one and two in Middleburg;the one won by Keith Brantley. Also, theShipshape 5K in Green Cove Springs onMemorial Day, Frank did the Course Di-rector duties and was nice enough toorder XXXL shirts for the three men onthe cone company truck.

From 1983 until a few years ago,Frank survived three serious cancer sur-geries. They were in his colon, later in hischest and lastly in his prostate. Dr.Matthew Becker, MD was an early Striderand removed the first and got talking toFrank about the Striders. Matt was amarathon runner out of the Sun Tire Sun-day runs and Frank and I would trot aboutone third of that distance with Matt’s wifeGlenn who became the Stride Right Edi-tor and won us a National Award. Frankhad two feet of his intestines removed yettwo years later at age sixty-two finishedthe Marine Corps Marathon in 4 ½ hourswhich turned out to be about the half way

point of the pack. Those three eventuallyfaced mediscis knee problems and wentinto other activities. Our fires are bankednow and this reminds me of Walt Stackout in San Francisco. Walt was a welderand gained notoriety for running theGolden Gate Bridge daily for fifty yearsbefore or after work. In his final years hehad this on the back of his shirt – “Run-ner: as you pass me by; as you are I oncewas; as I am you will become.”

When you first saw Frank it was ob-vious he had only one eye. After severalyears I gradually learned he had been aMarine assigned to a twenty millimetergun crew on the CV-10 Yorktown aircraftcarrier which was at the time our biggestcarrier. A kamikaze off Okinawa made avertical drop grazing the Bridge and killingover two dozen and left Frank blind forover a month. Navy surgeons back atPuget Sound managed to recoup thesight in one eye and he spent monthsthere recovering.

He was born in Baltimore and his fa-ther was the conductor for the orchestra

owned by The Baltimore Sun which wascommon for larger newspapers backthen. However, the Great Depressioncaused its demise and the family movedto what is called Hell’s Kitchen on 48thStreet in Manhattan where his dad couldcatch what work he could writing sheetmusic arrangements, etc. His high schooldays were at Aviation High School inHarlem about 110th St. (It has sincemoved to Long Island). Frank’s momwould pack his daily lunch and place anickel on top for the subway ride toschool but he had to walk home formoney was tight then. It was sixty-twoblocks but the family knew he would behungry enough for supper to make it.

Frank never met a stranger, was in-credibly strong and no one ever had abetter friend. He helped a lot during thatsegment of the Strider’s history and nowit is someone’s else’s turn to run aroundthe track during life’s relays.

– Jack [email protected]

This photo is from the 1989 Ed Root 10K in New Smyrna Beach. The coursewas two miles on elevated boardwalk in marsh near the Coast Guard Station aftertwo miles on hard road. The final two miles were on beach back to bath house.

It was exciting at the St. Johns Country DaySchool track last Wednesday, when our latestRunning Class fired up. There are 116 athletesregistered for our class and 26 Florida Stridershelping to support them in meeting their goals.About 80% of our athletes are beginning or re-newing their training as runners. Approximately10% are Intermediate runners and 10% arethere to sharpen their skills, knowledge, or justget faster. The Memorial Day 5K on May 26th isthe graduation race for our class. Our athletesare going to have a great race and I foresee alot of PR’s will be enjoyed. I am impressed andproud of all the athletes who are committingthemselves to this 10 week class to improve theirconditioning. It is my desire that those who arenew to our sport will learn to love it, as I have, and find running an enhancement to their lives.Speaking of life enhancing, I am very blessed tohave a wonderful team of Striders as GroupLeaders and Speakers. Each week of our 10week class, the group leaders are there to en-courage, support, share tips, and answer ques-tions throughout the training sessions. We arealso blessed to have excellent speakers whoshare their expertise with a brief lecture on animportant aspect of running. As the size of ourclasses has grown, we have now added a Feed-back session to each class where the athletesshare how they are progressing, along with anyquestions or concerns they have, with a team ofGroup Leaders who are specifically assigned tothem. In a perfect world I would get to run with, talk, and individually coach each and every ath-lete in our class – every week. While I haven’tfigured out how to make that happen literally, ourawesome Group Leaders take care of that veryneed and do it very well. Our training program issuccessful because of them, each and every onea volunteer in keeping with the fine tradition ofthe Florida Striders. I lack the eloquence to ad-equately express my appreciation to our GroupLeaders for the contribution they provide eachand every week.

I also wish to acknowledge the help of the St.Johns Country Day

Regina SooeyRegina started run-

ning in 2001 as a resultof an alcohol induceddare a few months be-fore her rapidly ap-proaching 30th birthday.

After the Winter Beaches and Gate RiverRun, she was hooked, and decided tosign up for a marathon. Since there wereno running groups that met at a sensiblehour, she started hammering out the longmiles with the Sun Tire group, often onnot nearly enough sleep. Thanks to thesewonderful, experienced runners she waswell-prepared for the marathon, andhooked on the comraderie of the Jax run-ning community. 14 marathons, 3 Iron-mans, and countless miles later, serioustraining and racing are here to stay.

In 2004, Regina decided to use herlove of sports to help others as thetriathlon coach for Team in Training. Sheturned couch potatoes into triathleteswhile they raised thousands of dollars tofight blood cancers and made lifelongfriends. Regina felt very strongly aboutsharing the gift of fitness with others. Thisyear Regina is a Girls on the Run coach, where she trains pre-teen girls for a 5Kwhile teaching them life’s lessons. Sportsand philanthropy are a great combination;which is exactly why Regina is excited toserve on the Strider Board and contributeto the running community even more.

Regina is a lawyer turned Realtor withWatson Realty. In her “free” time she lovesto travel, dive, hike, camp, experience finewine, and spend time with her fiance Darin

and her beloved dog and running buddyMaggie. In 2002 Regina backpackedaround the world solo.

Regina TaylorRegina is a Jack-

sonville native but still a

relative new comer to the running circuit. She ran for a couple of years back in thelate ninety’s and did the Gate River Run in1997. But it wasn’t until 2004 after sheturned 40 that Regina really became in-terested. She wanted to lose weight andget in shape so I decided to try runningagain. To get started Regina followed atraining program called “The Couch Potatoto 5K” around July of that year. She alsoused the 2005 Gate River Run as a goal tokeep me motivated. Soon after that raceshe learned of the Grand Prix and all thegood road races throughout the year andkind of got hooked. Regina enjoys pushing

herself and the races keep her focused. She really had a good year her first yearand was named the 2005-2006 Outstand-ing Women’s Master Division Runner bythe Jacksonville Track Club. Regina is veryproud of that. She joined the Striders in2005 and it really is the best running clubin the area. Besides running she also en-joys bowling, being a member of the GoldWing Road Riders Association , and goingto baseball games. She also spends a lotof time with her dachshund, Willie, and ofcourse my boyfriend Larry who most ofyou usually see at the races with her. He isRegina’s biggest supporter.

Editor’s Not: My aplogies for omittingKristie’s time from the March StrideRight.Congrats to her on finishing her firstmarathon!

School for their ongoing support of healthand fitness in our community and theFlorida Striders in particular. They arevery generous to share their beautiful fa-cility with us.

The Florida Striders also have a tra-dition of being very open about theirmoney and where it goes. Each of ourathletes pays for being in the class. The$30 cost for a single athlete is designedto be a breakeven financially, covering anannual membership in the Florida Strid-

ers, $15, and the rest of the money, $15,goes to cover the cost of the class T-shirts (all class members who attendseven or more classes receive one) anda bodacious and tasty class party. Whencouples or families join the class, whichI’m pleased to say happens frequently, they only pay for a family membershipand the cost goes down accordingly. Ath-letes who are already Florida Stridersonly pay $15. In case anybody wonders, the membership cost itself is used to helpwith the cost of our liability insurance,Road Runners Club of America dues, the

complimentary Florida Strider club mem-bership T-shirts, and to help defray thecosts of our newsletter and expenses. While on the financial topic, I can’t resistpatting the Florida Striders on the backfor the $14,000 they direct to support chil-dren’s running and scholarships.

Check out the list of our class (page5). You’ll be seeing them at the track, atthe Memorial Day 5K, and runningaround town, each and every one aFlorida Strider. You may have to lookquickly though, they are getting fasterand stronger every week.

Hepointed out that she’s a Jacksonville res-ident and she spoke with GeorgeHoskins at length before he left. All boardmembers seemed impressed with her re-sume. Gary Hallet moved that we acceptJanis as the new Treasurer and Boardmember. Glenn Hanna seconded themotion and it was passed unanimously.

Fun Run Proposal: Mary AnnSteinburg presented a proposal for a FunRun at the Jacksonville Suns game Sat-urday, May 17. She also said she hasspoken with a representative from the

What a big, big month. It’s the monthwe all look forward to each year – themonth the nation uses Jacksonville todetermine the nation’s best at running15 kilometers. Every runner in Jack-sonville gears up for it – that one hugerace that truly reflects Jacksonville’s big“Hart” for running. Hope everyone en-joyed their March. As for results, we start with the annual

appetizer to the real River Run with theDaily’s Ortega River Run 5 miler onFebruary 23rd in Jacksonville. While notthe River Run, it is still a large, competitiveGrand Prix race. Justin Jacobs beat allcomers, winning the race in 26:04. JohnMetzgar was 3rd overall with a 26:50.Masters division wins were turned in byJohn Steinberg and Sharon Pentaleri, who was also our fastest female Striderwith a 31:54. Outpacing the competitionin their respective age groups wereRobert Meister, Paul Smith, RebekahWild, Bruce Holmes, Patrick Gaughan,Elfrieda Wyner, and Holly Turner. Plac-ing second in their age groups were MarkWoods, Sam Gladding and PaulGeiger; and taking home 3rd place awardswere John Wisker, Janet Elliot, HarryEdwards, Regina Taylor, Stephanie

Griffith, and George White. Also of note, completing therace with a brand new kneewas Annie White-Baker,and doing the race whilepregnant was ShannenCrampton (it’s a boy!). WithShannen’s effort, we’ll go ahead considerher little boy as the champion in the “yet tobe born age group.” The next weekend saw two races on

March 1st, which were the Fleming Is-land 5K and Nocatee Trailblazers 5K.We had four Striders getting awards atthe Nocatee race, with Stephen Beard(19:59) and Bernie Candy winning theirage groups and Gordon Slater and HalHigdon placing second in their agegroups. In Fleming Island, DrewKenny led all Striders, winning the Mas-ter’s division and placing 2nd overall witha time of 18:00. Our age group winnerswere Matt Acheson, Keith Poythress,Robert Crampton, George White,Gayla Poythress (fastest femaleStrider), Marie McNary, Freddy Fill-ingham, and Al Saffer. Second placeage group finishes were recorded byRebekah Wild, Gary Hallett, and SueWhitworth. And staying with the baby

theme, 2-year-old LindseyMyers covered the coursein 19:47…while beingpushed by a parent. Now the BIG ONE. The

Gate River Run 15K Na-tional Championship was

held for the 31st time on March 8th. Raceconditions just about blew people away, literally. High winds, sometimes gustingup to 40mph, added to the challenge.I’m told the river was splashing over thewall too in San Marco, getting somerunners wet. Can’t wait to hear howmuch better the stories get about 10years from now. As for the actually run-ning, Striders were in top form, with sixwinning their age group and 14 otherstaking home awards. Our age groupchampions were Bruce Holmes, El-frieda Wyner, August Leone, DianeAimone, Joe Connolly, and our fastestfemale Strider, Sharon Pentaleri(1:01:03). Placing 2nd in their agegroups were John Metzgar, HollyTurner, Samuel Gladding, MalloryBane, and Irene Herbertson. FiveStriders took fourth in their age group, which included Page Ramenzani,George White, Paul Smith, Nancy

General Discussion: Gary Hallet asked about a celebration

for our 30th Anniversary, honoring thepeople who started our club. He sug-gested we do something at a Town Coun-cil meeting with Orange Park. Othersuggestions were to have an evening pro-gram with a presentation of past achieve-ments and photos. September wassuggested as a target month. Harms, and Everett Crum. And plac-ing fifth in their age groups were MarieBendy, Alexandria Midgett and BobMeister. Also of note: Justin Jacobsled all Striders with an impressive49:57, placing 38th overall; PRs werereported by Vicky Connell and BonitaGolden; Denise Dailey speed-walkedthe course in 1:26:40; and very big-upsgo out to Leo Sheckells and NormWyner, who each ran their 31st RiverRun. Congrats to everyone who partic-ipated in this event. And yeah, anotherlittle tot effort, with 5-year-old EmileeBush completing the Jr. River Run (amile I think) in 15:54. We round out the results this month

with the St. Patty’s Day Run, which in-cludes the 10K Grand Prix race and ac-companying 5K. It was held on March16th in Jacksonville, and it was hot. Niceto have this event the day before St.Patrick’s Day, you know, get the runningout of the way so you can dedicate allday on the 17th to good ol’ Irish festivi-ties and debauchery, as it should be! Inthe 10K, Justin Jacobs again led allStriders, placing second overall in a timeof 32:25. John Metzgar also had anoverall award, placing third in a time of33:30. Striders owned the Masters divi-sion again, as John Steinberg took themen’s masters and Regina Taylor wonthe women’s masters. Using their skillsand perhaps riding the luck of the Irishto age group wins were Bruce Holmes,Paul Geiger, and Elfrieda Wyner. Sec-ond place age group efforts were turnedin by Mark Woods, Denise Metzgar,Paul Smith and Bonita Golden. Andfinishing third in their age groups were

George White, Keith Poythress andTerry Sikes. In the 5K, Tracy Pfuntnerled all Striders with a 24:01, which wasgood enough to win her age group. Alsoputting up first place age group timeswere John Gauer and Gordon Slater.John Hirsch ran to second place in hisage group, while Carrie and Tyler Im-rich each posted 3rd place age groupfinishes. Striders – They’re everywhere!!Actually, they’re all in Jacksonville.

There were no out of town races re-ported this month. Tidbits and stuff I missed. I didn’t miss nothin’! (at least that I

was told about anyway). For the tidbit,I’m sure thousands of finishers at theGate River Run will remember the joyof crossing the finish line, especially asthey got to watch it on the big screen atJacksonville Municipal Stadium. But Iwould guess Strider Regina Sooey willhave the fondest memory of it. Why isthat?, you ask…she was proposed to atthe finish line. Regina was able to catchher breath long enough to say yes, andI imagine we’ll hear about the weddingplans soon. Congratulations Regina. AwardI’m going to hold off this month. A lot

of great efforts this month, but I’m look-ing for one that stands out. And re-member, I take nominations too, sosend them in if you feel someone isworthy of an award.

That’s all for this month. Rememberto record your results on the StriderMan clipboard at the local races. Untilnext time, train well and be safe.
