On the Saturday he attended the Meeting to elect of the new Mayor of the City of Salisbury. The first Mayor of Salisbury was a Robert Picot in around 1249; Cllr Bobbie Chettleburgh was elected the 749th Mayor of the City after the historic ceremony in St Thomas’ Church. Brig. Cullen then joined the City Councillors, Honorary Freeman, past Mayors & Mayoresses and other VIPs as they processed through the town to the Guildhall, watched by many Saturday shoppers. On Sunday, with hundreds of people paying tribute to the Armed Forces in the first ever national Armed Forces Day, a thousand-strong parade marched around the town, led by troops from D Squadron, The Kings Royal Hussars, based in Tidworth and part of 12 Mechanized Brigade, and including a strong contingent of veterans. Brigadier Cullen took the salute and laid a wreath in memory of all those Service personnel who have died in conflicts since the end of World War II. "This is about respecting the contribution of those who are still serving and our veterans”, said Brigadier Cullen. “ I was very proud to take the salute and for troops from the Brigade to take part. We were there representing the Armed Forces in a wider sense and I know that troops currently serving in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world appreciate the support that members of the public showed by attending events throughout the UK.” News from 1 RHA taking part in the 11 Brigade MRX I am sure that the recent intense activity on Salisbury Plain did not go unnoticed by residents of the Garrison. 11 Light Brigade's Mission Rehearsal Exercise (MRX) was the ‘dress rehearsal’, readying the Headquarters for its forthcoming tour in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. 11 Light Brigade was formed in 2007 for a one-off tour of the Province. It comprises units from across the Army - both UK and Germany-based - and will fold upon its return from Afghanistan, its units returning to their established Brigades. 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery is amongst its major units and played a full part in the MRX. 1 RHA's role was to coordinate 'Joint Fires' support to the manoeuvre elements fighting the battle out on the ground. This may comprise fast air from the Royal Air Force (apologies for the noise!), Army Air Corps attack helicopters or ground based fires - rockets, guns and mortars. The scenario was as strictly Afghan focused as possible. Netheravon was 'Camp Bastion', the huge joint logistics base in the desert west of Lashkar Gar, which was itself replicated by Tilshead. The infamous 'Green Zone' around the River Helmand was, naturally, the area surrounding the River Avon! All sorts of scenarios were thrown at the Brigade to test its procedures, some violent, some tragic and some bizarre, but all relevant and mostly based on real events that have occurred in the province. Sadly the Plain's micro- climate failed to replicate the burning sunshine and cloudless skies of Afghanistan, though some thought must be spared for 19 Light Brigade, currently in theatre, who held their MRX in driving snow back in February! The MRX marked the culmination of an intense period of training for 1 RHA. Preparation for the tour has been well structured, thorough and long!! The Regiment has lived and breathed Afghanistan for the past 9 months and, in our opinion, no previous unit has been better prepared to take on the challenges that lie ahead. Bear learns to fly like Bird ...

The RedDevils, the

Army's and the

ParachuteRegiment's

official parachute display team, based at the Joint Service Parachute Centre inNetheravon, have taught Bear Grylls, TV’s adrenaline-loving adventurer, to fly like a bird for his next round offilming, using a specially designed jump-suit with wings !Bear, who already has some 300 jumps under his belt, hasparachuted in to some of the most inhospitable deserts, jungles and mountains on earth for his popular TV series. "We always try and push the boundaries in the “BornSurvivor” programmes", he said. "I feel nervous beforeeach and every jump, but treat fear as an emotion thatsharpens you for what you need to do."Bear, who broke his back in three places in a free-fallparachuting accident several years ago, had a couple ofhours of training, including practising his airborne moveson a turntable in front of a mirror. He then jumped froma Cessna Caravan at 13,000 ft but, rather than descendingat the normal rate of around 120mph, the wing-suitreduced the rate by about half, with the rest of themomentum converted into a forward speed of up to 80mph."Amazing - that's a wonderful new experience for me inthe world of sky-diving," he said moments after touchingdown. "It's an extraordinary feeling literally flying like abird, you're in freefall for twice as long and you can flythrough the clouds steering around. I will definitely beusing the wing-suit for my next TV series and it feelsgreat to have been trained by the Red Devils - the best!"

Long summerdresses, razorsharp blazersand drivingrain could onlymean onething inTidworth inearly July :Rundle CupDay !Smarting fromtheir sounddefeat at the

hands of the Navy in 2008, and starting with a 2 ½ goalhandicap deficit, the Army immediately put their gameplan into action, scoring two goals in the first chukka andstamping their authority on the game. Lt Col MikeO'Dwyer marked the superb Commodore Richard Masonout of the game. Lt Hughie Arbuthnott rode hard upfront, giving Capts Kaye and Hicks, in the mid-field andat the back respectively, a great target for which to aim. Notably absent 12 months ago, King's Royal Hussarsofficers, Captains Kaye and Hicks, put a stranglehold onthe game, slowing the play when necessary and sendingout long passes forward, at the appropriate time. TheNavy's commitment never wavered, exemplified by LtCdr Arnie Lustman who, having crashed to the ground inthe goalmouth to save a goal, remounted after medicaltreatment to his leg.The game ended 6 - 2 ½ in the Army Team's favour, which, though greatly savoured, will no doubt be metwith a sharp Naval counter-attack next year !

Thank youMany thanks to SgtSpratt and PteSanderson who, together with a team

from 1RHA CateringDept, recently helped16 Cubs from TidworthScout Troop gain theirCookery badges,at the Scout Hutin Humber Lane.

On 13th July, Bear Grylls took over as theUK’s new Chief Scout, taking his Promiseand exchanging a “bear hug” with hispredecessor at a ceremony at the GilwellActivity Centre near London.

A Safety Tip ...Now that warmer weather is here, this is agood time to remind the public of the dangersin leaving windows open. Opportunisticburglars will take advantage of any open

ground floor windows to enter houses and steal. Our advice is to always make certain that downstairswindows and doors are locked and secured, particularlyovernight. If ventilation is needed, then use an upstairswindow, and ensure that any open upstairs window iswell away from adjoining flat roofs orconservatories, which may assist entry. Courses for Dependants ...“ You get started, then you want more ! “

Eleven Army Dependants have just successfullycompleted a Numeracy course organised by 10 ArmyEducation Centre, which took place at Zouch School inTidworth. Crèche facilities for their young children wereprovided in a nearby room while the course took place.Several of the women had heard of the course whileattending a “Skilled for Health” session and most of themwant go on to do further courses, either at the AFFTraining Centre in Bulford or TEMPO in Tidworth. Talking to Drumbeat after receiving their certificates fromGraham Taylor from New College Swindon, some of themexplained why they had enjoyed themselves so much :“I’ve had a mental block about maths ever sincechildhood, so doing this course has been a realconfidence-booster”, said Jasmine Brown, whose husbandis in 22 Engr Regt. “The thing is that we were all in thesame boat - there were not the same pressures that therewere at school and the atmosphere has been relaxed, knowing the children were being looked after nearby. ”Claire Dean, whose husband is in 2RTR said : “ I want todo a few more courses and then get back to work. TheCertificate from this course will look good on my CV, it’sthe best thing I’ve done in a long time. I don’t know whyit is such a struggle getting people to do things like this. It’s really good. My husband is in Afghanistan and thishas really helped me. It’s got me out of the house, I’vemet new people and now I am happier doing routinethings at home because I know I am doing somethingworthwhile. It’s good for the kids - they are socialisingtoo. Having the crèche just next door is great “Salisha Lawrence, whose husband is in 22 Engr Regt saidthat she saw the advert for the course in the library. “ Ialways had a fear of maths”, she said. “I have A-levels,but just needed maths to be able to get a teaching job.”The approachable tutor and friendly atmosphere suitsome people confronting a long-term fear of a subject, better than computer based courses :“ Everyone is very friendly and the teacher waswonderful”, Jacky Tickle told Drumbeat. “Computer-based courses are a good way to learn for busy peoplewho can’t spare the time to come to a class, but for me,small classes like this are the only way. It’s hard to teachyourself something you don’t know in the first place!” And Maria Watkins spoke for everyone when she said:“It was daunting at first, but the course gives you lots ofconfidence !”If you are interested in finding out more about Englishand Maths courses for dependants, please get in touch
