VOLUME V, NO . 6 The Medium of Television : Explorations in Video In cooperation with Antioch College's Graduate School of Media Studies, the Baltimore Museum will present an eight- week series of lectures/demonstrations focusing on the video medium as an art form and as a communications system . Video is the generic name for a kind of personalized television that began with the introduction of low-cost, portable equipment in the mid-60's . The public, on the whole, knows television only through the commercial entertainment that is ordinarily associated with the tube . Yet, what the avant-garde or ex- perimental film-maker did with motion pictures, the video-artist is now doing with television-exploring the medium for a new range of expressive possibili- ties . The aim of this series will be to cover the gamut of styles and formats attempted so far in the first five years of video's history: videographic films of the "expanded cinema," content-oriented documentaries of public access T .V., pure, electronically generated synthe- sized, colorized images (including inter- face with computers), and perceptual, conceptual and process-oriented investi- gations of time and space. The program, supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, is being coordinated byAlan Kaplan and Tom Johnson, Associate Professors in the Media Program of Antioch Col- lege's Baltimore Center . All programs will begin promptly at 8:00 P.M . in the Museum Auditorium and are free and open to all . February 7 An evening devoted to the work of W . N .E.T ./13 T.V . On Saturday, March 1, a mini-coursein photography for children, offered attwo different times-the first from 10 :30A.M . to 12:30 P.M ., and the second from

1 :30 to 3 :30 P.M .-will be held at TheBaltimore Museum of Art. Howard Green-berg and Steve Baklor, experiencedphotographers and teachers, will bringtheir mobile van, equipped with a dark-room, to the Museum and demonstratehow to use a camera, how to take apicture, and how to develop it . Photo-grams and sun pictures will also bemade . Cameras will be provided, andeach child will bring home a framedpicture which he has made .

Since this program is planned in con-junction with the photography exhibition"14 American Photographers," there willalso be a guided tour of some of the out-standing photographs in the exhibition .

Reservations must be made in ad-vance, accompanied by a check-$3.00for a member's child, $3.50 for non-members-as only a limited number canbe accommodated . Looking Back Over 1974During the past year, the Museum

opened the Downtown Gallery at a newlocation, providing visitors with a diver-sity of exhibitions and related programs .The members' family preview of "Talesfrom a King's Book of Kings" offeredan opportunity to see 52 breathtakinglybeautiful Persian miniatures as well asinstructions on tying a turban and build-ing a dragon . The Museum celebratedits 60th Birthday with family day activitiesand a 60th Anniversary Ball, and theCone Collection was reinstalled in therefurbished Cone Wing .
