CAMPUS RECREATION & WELLNESS The start of the new academic year is a time to start fresh. It is a time to live healthier, to eat better, and to renew yourself. It is an opportunity to try new things and to challenge yourself in new ways. As life gets busy, it is easy to forget about yourself to get your “list” done. However, it is important to recognize that you only have one place to live, and it is through that body that you are accomplishing other things. Take care of your body and let us be part of your lifelong journey. We understand that not everyone enjoys weightlifting or playing sports or running on the track, but we believe we have something for everyone that promotes healthy living. Our services allow for plenty of opportunities to play. We have open swim, general use of the CRC, open volleyball, pick-up basketball, climbing the wall and opportunities to checkout plenty of equipment that can help get you active. We also offer tons of programs to suit various interests including group exercise classes, our newly-created Catamount Fit program, intramural sports, drop-in sport activities, club sports (don’t forget you can start a new one), personal training, and a variety of outdoor trip opportunities. We have weekday opportunities and weekend opportunities so we can accommodate everyone’s schedules as best as possible. In 2016-2017, we want to continue to inform you about our programs and services through our social media outlets. We need you to “like” us so we can tell you what is going on with CRW, not to mention there will be opportunities to engage with us or get discounts. We also want you to tag us as you participate in our programs and services. The start of the new academic year is a time to start fresh. It is a time to live healthier, to eat better, and to renew yourself. It is an opportunity to try new things and to challenge yourself in new ways. As life gets busy, it is easy to forget about yourself to get your “list” done. Join us for fun, fitness, and a free t-shirt at the Group X Jam on Thursday, August 25th from 5:30pm-7:00pm. The Group X Jam is a wonderful opportunity to sample many of our Group Xercise classes for free. The Jam fills up quickly, so get there early!

Group X classes will officially begin on Monday, August 29th. Reminder: The Fall Group X schedule will be held hostage until the Jam. Group X class passes are $10.00 for the entire semester and include ALL classes on the schedule. Participants can register anytime the CRC is open or at Group X Jam.

Group X Jam & Group X Classes

How many of us out there sit and mindlessly eat in front of the television? Or perhaps eat whenever we are bored, sad, happy, mad or really experiencing any other emotion? When out in a social situation, do you feel obligated to eat whatever is offered or order similarly to the group? You are not alone in this feeling!! Most people struggle with mindless eating. While most of us are aware of WHAT foods we are actually consuming, few put much thought into HOW we are eating. By applying the What, Where, Why, When, and How much principle of mindful eating we can become more present in our daily food routine! These steps will over time help curb cravings, lower consumption of extra calories, and open our eyes to the joy of food and the nourishment it can bring.

The next time you are about to eat, stop and ask....

What: What is it that I am choosing to eat? Will it nourish my body in a healthy way?

Where: Where am I eating this food? Am I in front of the TV, vegging out on the couch or with friends out at a social function? Is this location affecting my food choices?

Why: Why am I eating right now? Am I actually hungry? Am I eating this because of an emotion I am experiencing? Do I feel obligated because I am at a certain social function?

How / How Much: How am I eating my food? Am I eating slowly or quickly? Am I listening to my body’s cues of fullness? How much food is on my plate?

By simply taking the time to stop and think about our eating process, we are already practicing mindful eating. A great way to integrate this into your routine is to pick just one meal a week. Assess if you are really hungry and then pick something that you consider a healthy food choice and not your go-to “feel better” food. Then enjoy the meal in a quiet place with no distraction, I mean no TV, no other people, no phones!!! Take your time with each bite and try to make the meal last at least 20 minutes; you may find that setting the fork down between bites may help with this. Listen to your body to see when you are actually full or if you are simply finishing your plate out of habit or obligation. It may feel uncomfortable at first but over time you will appreciate food and the act of eating in ways you never have before. Happy Eating everyone...YUM!!!! Provided by Katie Gantt, WCU Dietetic Intern Red Flag Campaign

Beginning on August 27th, WCU will again participate in a national campaign to increase awareness of dating violence and promote the prevention of dating violence on college campuses. The Red Flag Campaign is a flag and poster campaign that is focused on encouraging students to “say something” when they see a red flag in someone’s relationship. So, when you see hundreds of little red flags on the UC Lawn, it is not for construction, it’s the first part of the campaign that is followed by posters raising awareness about dating violence.

For more information on the warning signs of dating violence, how to help, or how to get help for a friend, visit www.TheRedFlagCampaign.org

Catamount FitLooking for a whole new fitness challenge? In fall 2016, CRW is offering a NEW fitness program that will be led by CRC certified personal trainers. This intense training program will focus on creative workouts for body strength, core, and cardio.

Catamount Fit kicks off on Monday, September 12 and will run for 5 weeks, ending before fall break. You, as a participant, can choose if you would like to attend class 1, 2, 3, or 4 times each week. Classes will be held Monday-Thursday from 5:30-6:30pm on Court 2 of the CRC. Only 20 committed participants are allowed to register for each day’s class. Registration begins on Monday, August 22nd at the CRC. Cost for the program is $15 for the first day you choose and then $10 for each additional day. If you choose to register for all 4 days, you get it at a discounted rate of $40. In addition, as a participant in this program you can purchase a group x pass for the semester for only $5 to supplement your workouts in this program.

For more information or additional questions email Mandy Dockendorf at [email protected].

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Mary Kindred has worked for Base Camp Cullowhee Outdoor Programs since the second semester of her freshman year in 2015. She works at the climbing wall, in the adventure shop, and leads various trips. Mary’s favorite part of working here is getting to facilitate adventures that are often first-time experiences for participants. She found her love for the outdoors through Base Camp and she enjoys sharing that with others. Mary’s advice to fellow employees is to take time to do the job well, because that’s when you get the most rewarding experience for yourself and the participants. She is a Nursing major, but she’s not 100% sure what she wants to do after graduation. There are various paths that she can take with Nursing, and she is interested in doing medical mission work. Mary describes herself as a genuine person who is always down for an adventure, and she is dedicated to important aspects of her life such as her faith, friends, and family. An interesting fact is that Mary was an extra in the Hunger Games! Thanks Mary for all of your hard work and dedication to Campus Recreation & Wellness!

Zach Farnham is originally from Concord, NC, and has worked for IT Applications & Systems for a year and a half. He likes to work out around noon, doing weight training, followed by the Stairmaster or a run around campus. Zach has been working out for about three years, and he believes a regular exercise program helps improve memory and cognitive abilities. It also makes it easier to keep up with a high-energy toddler. Zach is pictured here with his son Wiley. Congratulations, Zach, on being chosen Member of the Month! We admire your workout consistency and dedication to Campus Recreation & Wellness.

I am excited to return to the Whee, and serve as the Associate Director for Campus Recreation & Wellness. I attended WCU as an undergraduate student, and worked many nights for Intramural

Sports as an Official and Supervisor. I decided to continue my career in Campus Recreation, and attended Western Kentucky University where I earned my master’s degree and worked in Intramural Sports. After graduate school, I worked at Elon University overseeing various programs like Intramural Sports, Outdoor Adventures, Challenge Course and facility operations. My wife and I both graduated from WCU and we are excited to be back home in the mountains. I enjoy hiking and being on the water, and love to play golf, flag football and basketball. Feel free to stop by my office and say hello anytime.

Help us Welcome our new Associate Director, Brandon MacCallum!
