Selichot OIL ON CANVAS , 2019Se l i chot means forg iveness ( l i tera l ly “pardons”) in Hebrew, and re fers to the pre -Rosh Hashanah tradi t ion of formal ly leav ing behind our wrongdoings of the year that i s coming to a c lose . Past and future meet as one year ends and another beg ins . Let t ing go of the old year makes space for new intent ions . I t i s tradi t ional to rec i te communal prayers a f ter midnight , inc luding the Thir teen At tr ibutes of Mercy, which appeal to God for d iv ine compass ion . Personi f ied here are the two faces of t ime: past , with hair of dy ing leaves; and future , of budding green fol i age . The future forg ives the past , gent ly k iss ing away a tear before turning to f ace forward .

Ushpizin OIL ON CANVAS , 2019The 8 -day agr icul tura l hol iday of Sukkot dates back to B ib l ica l t imes . A sukkah , or she l ter, i s bui l t for the occas ion from organic mater ia ls such as branches or st a lks . The sukkah has mult ip le meanings: emulat ing the temporary she l ters in which the I srae l i tes s lept on the ir long journey across the S inai Deser t ; f ashioned af ter the crude huts bui l t by f armers who s lept by the ir f ie lds dur ing the harvest ; and symbol iz ing the impermanent nature of l i fe – and by contrast , the eternal nature of the soul . The lat ter is represented by ushpiz in – Aramaic for “guests” – who are r i tua l ly inv i ted into the sukkah . These guests may be strangers , the poor, h is tor ica l ancestors , B ib l ica l f igures or prophets . They are welcomed as reminders that we are never a lone in the house of God , though the ce i l ing is open enough to show stars . Thus this f l imsy dwel l ing in a fr ag i le world is paradoxica l ly ca l led a sukkat sha lom – a she l ter of peace . תשרי-חשון תשייפ

Noah & the Dove OIL ON CANVAS , 2019In this month’s Torah por t ion , Noach , the story of the Great F lood unfolds . Many vers ions of th is epic t a le inc lude v iv id rendit ions of the animals within the ark , with the ir feathers and fur, smel l s and sounds a l l ming l ing within th is rock ing vesse l of b irds and beasts – the l iv ing genes of a l l creatures that wi l l repopulate the ear th , now washed c lean by the f lood. As the vast waters recede , Noah sends out f ir st a raven , who cannot f ind dry l and; then a dove , who returns with an ol ive branch in her beak , which Noah rece ives with great joy, and then let s her go. The tender young leaves of the ol ive branch br ing the promise of new l i fe that i s a lready budding on the land where these rest less animals wi l l soon run free .

Chumash OIL ON TE X TURED PAPER COLL AGE ON CANVAS , 2018The word chumash , f rom the Hebrew word chamesh or “ f ive ,” i s the name of the Hebrew B ib le (or F ive Books of Moses) in the form of a bound book . When wri t ten in ca l l igraphy on a scrol l , the same book is a l so

Isaiah & the Seraph ACRYL IC ON TE X TURED PAPER COLL AGE ON CANVAS , 2019Images of surrender and transformat ion abound in the Neve’ im , or books of prophets , from which the week ly haf tarah readings are drawn. This month’s Torah por t ion , Yi t ro , in which the Ten Command-ments are revealed , i s pa ired with another passage of reve lat ion from the Book of I sa iah . The prophet has a v is ion of God seated on a throne in heaven , surrounded by the mythica l seraphim . Declar ing himse l f to be of “impure l ips ,” I sa iah cr ies out in anguish , whereupon one of the winged creatures touches his mouth with a hot coal from God’s a l t ar, inst ant ly c leans ing the prophet ’s words . The pur i f i -cat ion of l anguage is a cha l leng ing subject for a v isua l ar t is t – mak ing this my four th paint ing of th is inspir ing passage – and probably not my last .

Procession of the Ark ACRYL IC ON CANVAS , 2019Rejoic ing in music and dance is the theme of th is month’s haf tarah that i s paired with the Torah por t ion Sh’min i . This joy fu l passage from the Book of Samuel te l l s of the process ion of the Ark of the Covenant as i t i s carr ied to the Cit y of David in Jerusa lem. The l id of the Ark is f ashioned of pure hammered gold , shaped into two cherub im that spread the ir wings over the vesse l that carr ies both the broken t ab lets that Moses smashed , and the new ones that replaced them. With shout ing and b last s of the shofar, David and the I srae l i tes dance before God to the sound of harps , lyres , hand drums , rat t les , and cymbals . A few modern instruments are added to symbol ize the re joic ing in music that i s heard in synagogues today.

Red Door, Nachla’ot OIL ON CANVAS , 2019Located in centra l Jerusa lem, Nachla’ot was one of the f ir s t ne ighborhoods to be bui l t outs ide the Old Cit y wal l s . Dat ing back to the 1870s , i t ’s a l abyr inth of s tone cour tyards , a l leyways , t iny synagogues , overgrown
k i tchen gardens , orphanages , and yesh i vot (re l ig ious schools) . This door caught my eye with i t s crumbl ing s tone arch . An ant ique post a l mai lbox was pa inted to the door, and hang ing on a s tr ing from the door handle
was a t iny key. According to some his tor ians , red doors in I srae l harken back to the mark ing of l ambs b lood that enabled the tenth p lague to pass over the homes of the I srae l i te s l aves in Eg ypt . As I pa inted , I
wondered: what f ami l ies of immigrants , scholars , s tudents or orphans have l ived in th is house , to ld that s tory, and p laced that s t ar of Dav id above i t s door?

Forest Mezuzah OIL ON CANVAS , 2019For modern Jews , the communit y that i s so intr ins ic to Judaism must be ba lanced with a l i fe of work and home that i s somet imes f ar away. L iv ing in a rura l locat ion , one is more surrounded by nature than the kehi l lah . On a sol i t ar y Shabbat , I walked the forested mountain where I l ive , env is ioning the doorway to God’s temple as an arch between two trees . As I reach to touch the imaginary mezuzah mounted on a trunk , l ight s lants through the branches in purple , b lue , and cr imson – the cher ished colors of the Tabernac le – interact ing with the colors of the forest even as I carr y within the l ights that are k indled by communit y and tradi t ion .
