YEAR 8 STUDENTS EXPLORE ENERGY IN ‘JUNKYARD CHALLENGE’

Gleeson College’s Annual STEM Expo is fast approaching; this year it will be held on Tuesday 30 June in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre (DRMC).

In preparation for this evening, each Year 8 Class has learnt about Energy and the different forms it can take. One such type is Elastic Potential Energy! All students were placed in groups and given the ‘Junkyard Challenge’. Students had to

use materials that they could find around their homes and use these to construct an elastic powered vehicle. The aim was to create and produce a vehicle that could travel the greatest distance!

Last Thursday 4 June, the two winning cars from each class were invited to participate in the finals, where each group had two final runs and the best distance was recorded to determine a

grand prize winner. It was excellent to see student’s creativity and excellent ideas in terms of design and their model execution. The greatest distance recorded was over 12 metres! I encourage you all to come along to the STEM Expo to see the cars in action, guest speakers, prize presentations and more!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PUNCTUALITY

Schools are places that are dictated by time. Bells sound, timetables are followed, breaks are restricted to time limits and each subject is given a set number of minutes.

As teachers we treasure the time we have to teach our subjects and every minute is important. We certainly dislike wasting time and even more losing time, from our lessons.

At Gleeson College we value punctuality and arriving to school on time is very high on the list. We would like to thank all families who make it a priority each weekday morning to get the family ready and get their child/ren to school on time. We know it can be difficult at times. Thank you! We really appreciate it.

Exams Next WeekYear 10 and 11 students at Gleeson College will have exams next week. For our Year 10 students this will be their first experience of exams and this can be daunting for some students. At Year 10, the exams may be viewed as long tests which give the students a chance to

show what they have learned in the first Semester of Senior School; they should be viewed as an opportunity, not a threat.

The Year 11 students have some experience of the examination process and in some cases the exams count for their SACE grade. For all year levels though, the lead up to the exams is a learning process in itself. I know that many students have started a revision program in their ‘harder’ subjects, but all students should be revising work from last term as a part of their weekly homework routine. The idea of doing a little study often and regularly is substantially better than giving one enormous effort the night before the exam.

Semester 1, Coming to a CloseMonday 22 June sees the commencement of Semester 2. For many of your children this means new timetables and, perhaps, new subjects with new teachers. It is an exciting and refreshing time and should be seen as an opportunity to restart and further improve on results from Semester 1, establishing a firm foundation for next year’s studies.

…Year 12Little changes though for our Year 12 students as most of their subjects are year-long. At this stage it would not be unusual for Year 12 students to be experiencing some stress; the work is piling up and getting more difficult. You may have noticed sleep patterns changing for your child and a certain moodiness which makes it difficult to communicate

at times. This is all normal in the scheme of things in Year 12.

As parents we must support our children to get through this challenging time in a difficult year. Perhaps it is appropriate to change some routines if things are too stressful. Try different techniques for relaxing, alternate work and rest periods, create study groups or link up with a study partner to share the load. There are many things we can do to alleviate the burden at this time. Please do not forget that our Counsellors at Gleeson are very helpful too. They can support your child with organisational skills as well as providing moral support and a listening ear.

Knockout SportAs you will read in other pages of this publication, many students have been involved in State Knockout Sport over the past couple of weeks and will do so in the weeks to come. These competitions see schools from across the state pitted against each other over two terms in a variety of sports culminating in a State Final near the end of the year.

At times, these games will take students out of their normal lessons, so it is very important that students are up-to-date with their school work and keen to catch up on any work missed whilst competing for the school. Participating students are required to check with their subject teachers before playing in State Knockout games to ensure that they stay in touch with the curriculum.

Gleeson has a great record in these competitions and we are certainly looking forward to a successful 2015.

Mr J Corbo,Deputy Principal

ATTENTION:STUDENTS ATTENDING HOMEWORK CLUB

As the new semester is about to start, could the parents of students who plan to continue with Homework Club, please confirm the

afternoons they will attend.

If your child is no longer wishing to use the Homework Club, could you please let me know via email at [email protected] as soon as possible to ensure we can update our records. You

could also place a note in your child’s diary, for them to show me, when they are next in Homework Club. Thank you.

GILMOR CLASS MASS: ‘COMPASSION & JUSTICE’In Terms 1 and 2, developing a clear understanding of the Eucharistic Celebration of Mass is a strong focus in Year 8 Religious Education lessons. Students also learn about the life and legacy of Archbishop James Gleeson and how to sing the College song, ‘With One Heart’.

All of this is brought together in the celebration of a Class Mass in our St James Chapel. The excerpts taken from Summative Timed Reflections written by students after their Mass experience, reveal the importance of a Class Mass to their understanding of the Catholic faith. The students were assisted in planning their Mass by our Youth Ministers Daniel Coscia, Caroline Shaw and Angelica Barrientos. The theme of ‘Compassion and Justice’ was reinforced in a practical way, by students donating a gold coin for the UNICEF Nepal Earthquake Children’s Emergency Appeal.

Ms Helen Gillen,GILMOR Religious Education Teacher

“The importance of a Class Mass is to get students more involved, build confidence with public speaking and show support

for others who are in need.”Owen Thomas (8 FMHAU)

“In the chapel I felt we were all gathered as one and were paying attention as we were in a small space and could

communicate with each other.”Adelle Napoli (8 HMGIL)

“When I entered the chapel for our Class Mass it felt like a warmer and more

compact space. The sun shining through the stained glass windows was a great

look because I think it shows God’s light shining on all of us. Monsignor Swann’s

homily was inspiring and I thought he did a great job. One thing he said stuck in

my head; what would Jesus do?”Zachary Cini (8 MMMAH)

“The song connects me to the school community because I know the song off by heart, telling me and everyone that I am part of the Gleeson community and I have listened, studied, practised and

sung the song.”Luca Topolnjak (8 HMGIL)

“When I sing the song I am no longer thinking about my last school, I am

thinking about Gleeson and howmuch I like it here.”

Emily Lamb (8 MMECO)

“I think that the song connects with the Gleeson community because we respect each other and if someone is struggling,

we help them back on their feet.”Karlee Turner (8 FMWIL)

“The Class Mass was a good experience for me, being able to plan it ourselves

and have jobs. I feel like a smaller group of people makes it more personal and you feel Monsignor Swann is talking to you personally, especially because he

looks you in the eye.”James Nisbet (8 HMTOU)

“I am thankful for the work Daniel, Caroline and Angie did for our Mass. You

could tell how much they had done as soon as the slideshow began.”Millicent Anderson (8 FMCAR)

“Monsignor Swann spoke to use about how you see an issue in the world and you can feel that something is wrong, but you can’t do something about it.

This is what Jesus did- he saw a scenario where something was wrong and did

something about it, which is how we as a community should be more like Jesus.”

Kayla Russell (8 HMCAS)

“Compassion and justice mean to me that you are compassionate to someone

or something. You feel sorry for them and have the urge to help them. It means

doing something and not just hanging back and not doing anything.”Charlotte Dowling (8 HMCAS)

“As the Prayers of the Faithful were read, I really thought about how I could act

justly and show compassion. It was also good that we made a donation, as it

really connected with acting justly and being compassionate.”

Peter Librino (8 FMWIL)

“As a class we have shown our compassion by giving a gold coin

donation. The donation is going to UNICEF to help children who have been

victims of the earthquake in Nepal.”Giovanni Iacopetta (8 MMECO)

OPEN KO NETBALLERS THROUGH TO ROUND 2 AFTER THRILLING START!The Open Girls Knockout Netball Team have progressed to Round 2 of the Statewide KO Netball Competition after a thrilling win over Pedare Christian College and a very comfortable victory against Windsor Gardens Vocational College on Monday 25 May.

The Open Girls squad of 12 players from Years 10-12 came up against Pedare in Game 1, and what a game it was. Tightly contested from the start, and neither team willing to give in, a single goal separated the teams at each quarter’s end. The beginning of the last quarter saw Gleeson able to establish a small lead, and with this came the option of making some on-court changes and the introduction of fresh players into the game. This allowed us to continue building the lead to an impressive 13 goals by the final whistle! This was a well-deserved win and tremendous confidence boost for the girls. We worked as a team, kept turnovers to a minimum and supported each other at all times.

Game 2 was against a less polished team, however this provided the girls a chance to work on set plays and experiment with positions and combinations that may be tried in future games.

Final Results:Gleeson 46 def Pedare 33Gleeson 66 def Windsor Gardens 16

I was very proud of the skills, team work, commitment and perseverance the girls showed on the day. We now move in to the next round full of confidence and keen to compete! A big thank you to the parents who came and supported us on the day.

YEAR 8/9 BOYS KNOCKOUT SOCCER - ROUND 1 DEMOLITION!

Congratulations to Emerson Nugent (8 FMWIL) who won a

Bronze medal at the 2015 Junior State Road Cycling Championships

held in Clare last weekend.

Emerson, who rides for Norwood Cycling Club, took third place in the tightly contested U15 Men’s 27km event. This is a great effort as he

has only riding road for six months. Emerson is pictured on the dais

after receiving his medal.

Well done Emerson on this outstanding sporting achievement!

The Gleeson Year 8/9 Knockout Soccer Team travelled to Thomas More College

for Round 1 of the competition last Thursday 4 June.

Throughout the day we tried our best and played well to win against Burc

College 18-0 in the first game and then Thomas More 9-0 in the second.

It was a solid team effort and the team could not have done it without the help from our Coach, Carlo Librino (Gleeson

Old Scholar), and Mr Steven Hicks.

We would like to thank everyone for participating and we look forward to our

next game in the following weeks.
