In the early 1920’s Leopold Stickley began creating a col-lection of upholstered chairs and sofas which were inspiredby our early heritage. Several of those pieces are so uniquein their design, and timeless in their appeal, that we havereissued them as part of today’s fine upholstery collection.

Forty years later, Alfred Audi, as president of theAudiana Craft Shop, was producing an exceptionallyhigh quality line of custom upholstery for New York’smost discriminating designers and their clients. It was abusiness that was successfully built on his passionatebelief that “luxurious comfort and uncompromisingquality standards create the ultimate value in fine

The goal is to provide even, gentle support,which eliminates pressure points and evenlydistributes weight over the entire seating area.In addition, each seat is designed with a subtle“pocket” which holds the body at a comfort-able pitch and prevents the pull of gravityfrom stressing the sitter’s position over time.

8-WAY HAND KNOTTEDCONSTRUCTIONEducated consumers have long identified an“8-way hand tied spring base” as an importantbenchmark of high quality upholstery construction. Sadly, this term has been dilutedover the years as the original technique ofhand tying springs has fallen victim to manu-facturing shortcuts and marketing mythology.

The artisans at Stickley Fine Upholstery stillsecure each spring with 8 separate, hand tiedknots (rather than simple loops) of high quality tying twine. This old-world processtakes twice as long, but the results can last a lifetime.

Like the “blind dovetail” joints in many Stickley dressers, most of the construction features noted here are hidden beneath the surface, and areindicative of our deep sense of pride in the products we build.

SSpecial TouchesSkirted pieces are furnished with adjustable glides,which allow the skirt height to be adapted to varyingcarpet thicknesses, as well as to hardwood floors.

Marshall Unit BacksTight-back styles utilize individual muslin-covered springs over asinuous spring foundation, rather than simple foam construction,for lifetime support.

Exceptional DurabilityMost Stickley frames are made from 5/4 kiln dried maple. Joints are doubledoweled for maximum durability.

Engineered for ComfortStickley uses the finest high-carbon steelsprings, interlocked into special sagless, corrugated steel webbing, to form an exceptionally durable, “spring on spring” foundation. Individual springs are 8-way hand-knotted for even support and maximum comfort.

A skirted sofa may have as many as 80 individual pieces of fabric that need to be cut to pattern with exceptional accuracy.

MARSHALL UNIT BACKMost tight back designs feature the use ofMarshall Unit coil springs over a sinuousspring foundation...a construction featurerarely seen today. Unlike the simple foam construction used by others, the muslin-covered springs of a Marshall Unit will notsoften or sag with use. This technique insures luxurious comfort and consistent back support for the life of the piece.

FULLY MITERED SKIRTSLike the Triple Guided Drawers on Stickleycases, Fully Mitered Skirts are a window to the hidden craftsmanship of Stickley FineUpholstery. This painstaking detail is foundonly on the finest upholstery, and it is a featurethat you will find on every skirted piece that we

make. We invite you to gently lift the skirt on aStickley piece and compare it to any other.

The intricate, picture frame seam at each corner of a Stickley Fully Mitered Skirt eliminates extra layers of fabric and allows it todrape freely and tailor neatly to the frame.

Stickley skirts are also Fully Lined. This meansthat you will never see staples, cardboard stripsor ragged edges beneath a Stickley skirt. Theartisans at Stickley Fine Upholstery want thesehidden areas to be as clean and neatly tailoredas the surfaces you look at every day.

Stickley skirt panels are individuallymatched, with a degree of pattern alignmentthat is uncommon in the industry. As you mightexpect, we spend as much time matching pan-els on the back of the sofa as we do the front.

CENTER OR FLOW MATCHEDEach piece of Stickley Fine Upholstery is 4-Way Center Matched or Flow Matchedto our exacting specifications.

“Center Matching” - is the term that describesthe placement of a fabric’s motif in the center of each seat and back cushion. Center matchingis used for fabrics with a dominant centermotif, such as the 96-9131-87 Sofa on page 12.

“Flow Matching” - is the method of fabricplacement which allows the pattern to match,or “flow”, both horizontally and verticallyacross the surface of the piece. Flow matching is a tedious process, which requires the highestdegree of upholstery skill and patience. AtStickley, we flow match stripes, plaids, andoverall patterns with no discernable center such as the vine pattern above.

he finishes shown below are designed for use only on the exposed maple that is standard on most Stickley

Fine Upholstery styles. Frames which feature exposed cherry, mahogany, or white oak are noted, and are

available in a selection of Mission or Traditional finishes. Samples of those finishes are shown in the

Stickley Mission or Stickley Traditional catalogs.

Avoid exposure to strong sunlight. Direct exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun will hasten the natural fading of all fabricand leather dyes. The clear dyes of Aniline leathers are particularly susceptible to sun fading.

Vacuum your cushions regularly to remove dust and accumulated soil. Microscopic dirt particles have an abrasive quality that isthe biggest factor in fabric wear.

Rotate your cushions periodically. We all tend to slouch a bit when settling into our favorite piece of upholstery. This subtleslouching motion will gradually drag the cushion fabric toward the front of the piece. Rotating the cushions keeps the casing posi-tioned properly on the cushion core, and also evens out the impact of frictional wear and sun exposure on the fabric.

Be sure that pets have limited access to your furniture. The simple snagging of a pet’s claw can disfigure an upholstery fabricand lead to its premature wear.

Use Adjustable Glides if necessary - Proper adjustment of the leg glides will prevent a skirt from “puddling” on a deep pile carpetand becoming permanently distorted.

Fabric Cleaning - All Stickley fabrics are protected with Dupont Teflon® or a similar stain repellent*. Should cleaning be necessary,a small label is attached to each piece of Stickley Fine Upholstery that gives specific information on the care and cleaning of thefabric that you have selected. (This information is also available from your dealer to assist you with your fabric selection). Theseinstructions should be followed carefully.

We believe strongly in the quality and integrity of our workmanship. Should a manufacturing defect occur with one of our products, it will be repaired or replaced at our option. This warranty does not apply to damage during transit, or to any defectsresulting from abuse, alterations or accidents. This warranty does not apply to fabrics or leathers supplied either by Stickley or by the Customer.
