WHY STUDY History?
At the 100th anniversary of WWI, we realise the
choices and mistakes that were made...
The enthusiasm ordinary people showed before
WWI was brutally crushed by the scale of
suffering and destruction that followed. The
attitudes changed massively. ‘War is not that
bad’ went to ‘never, ever again.’ If History were
not studied, war might be treated differently.

ST GEORGE’S CHAPEL
This year is the 25th anniversary of the fall of the
Berlin Wall … an incredible feat because it marked the
overthrowing of a communist area, yet it happened
peacefully. At that point people may have thought that
it marked the beginning of worldwide democracy, but
how mistaken were they …
Communist areas like China and Middle Eastern
countries like Iraq are not just going to bow down and
accept the Western way and tradition of life. This is
what the Russian novelist and historian Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said. Although he
was not a fan of Communism, he recognised it as equal to Western civilisation.
