SYNOPSIS

Canary Island cop José (Alex Gonzalez) has become callous and cynical. As border patrolman, he has to decide the fate of hundreds of African boat people that wash ashore on the Spanish island paradise. When German tourist Nathalie (Sabine Timoteo) witnesses the arrival of a boatload of refugees and starts helping out on the spot, the lives of José, Nathalie and Congolese Zola (Huber Koundé), one of the few survivors with his son Mamadou (Dami Adeeri), become fatefully intertwined. Over the objections of her husband Paul (Friedrich Mücke), Nathalie helps Zola try to escape from internment camp. But instead of freedom, he fi nds himself at the hands of criminal smugglers. When José blames himself for the death of his drug-addicted sister Marielle (Alba Alonso) on New Year’s Eve, and Nathalie gets ever more deeply involved in Zola’s fate, José is forced to rethink his attitude. It’s up to him to decide. But to free someone, you may have to free yourself fi rst.

COLOR OF THE OCEAN is a gripping and moving story about humanity and responsibility with the essential focus on the human dilemma of when to get involved or not.

PRESS NOTE

COLOR OF THE OCEAN (Die Farbe des Ozeans) highlights the politically charged humanitarian problem of African refugees arriving on the shores of Europe. Seen from different human and personal perspectives, the fi lm refrains from passing moral judgement. Directed and written by Maggie Peren (“Special Escorts – Stellungswechsel”), the main roles include Alex Gonzalez (“Luz de Domingo“), Sabine Timoteo (“The Free Will – Der Freie Wille“), Friedrich Mücke (“Mahler on the Couch – Mahler auf der Couch“, “Friendship!“) and Hubert Koundé (“The Constant Gardener“).The up & coming producers Boris Jendreyko and Thomas Klimmer from Munich chose an international and highly topical theme for their theatrical producing debut. The fi lm was shot on location in Spain and Gran Canaria with an international team and their Südart Filmproduktion.

DIRECTORS STATEMENT

Maggie Peren DIRECTOR & SCREENPLAY

Being born German means knowing guilt.

Which makes it all the more disturbing that we have no problem speaking about our guilt in regard to the Holocaust and two World Wars, but seem all the more willing to don blinders and play deaf to current crises, claiming a neutrality one of the world’s largest economies can never have.

In 2006, I saw a report on subsidized fruits and vegetables from Europe being exported to Africa and destroying local markets. Senegalese farmers can’t compete with the artifi cially low prices. Many who lose their homesteads try to cross the sea to Europe in search of work and a better life. Often they wind up working on the very plantations that destroyed their livelihood at home.

I was surprised because I had always assumed that refugees came from war-torn countries and failed states. That people from a country like Senegal, which has been at peace for decades, would risk their lives on a nutshell at sea because they had no future at home, was a shock to me.

The more I looked into it, the more I realized how perverse the situation was: While Europe is to blame for the refugees’ poverty, we refuse them asylum for the very reason they are “merely” economic refugees, not political.

To hide their origins, the refugees are forced to board the boats without any papers that would identify them and where they are from. If the ships sink, they die without a name. I wanted to show the faces of these nameless refugees, quickly realizing it was not my place, as a German, to point fi ngers at other nations. While Germany is hardly affected by the infl ux, Spain and Italy have to bear the brunt of the onslaught. The story thus turned more and more into a parable. We see people clashing, not abstract arguments.

While trying to raise the fi nancing, I was always asked, What’s it got to do with us? I would talk about the tomatoes we export to Africa and the illegal immigrants who come here to pick them. About how we catch all the fi sh in the seas and the Africans then come here on the same fi shing trawlers. How the EU invests millions of Euros to protect our borders, but not a cent on addressing the causes. People would always say, “Well, that’s globalization, there’s nothing you can do about it.”But “globalization” isn’t a person, it’s an economic development that is personifi ed so that real people can hide behind it. Germany is the economic powerhouse of Europe, but we insist on closing our eyes to what’s happening on our doorstep.

Film is a medium that unites us. We all get together in a darkened room, while light is projected through an image smaller than a pack of cigarettes. On the screen, it becomes larger than life. Film is a magnifying glass. I wanted to highlight a topic we have shut our eyes to. But it’s there, and it’s not going away. People drown off the coasts of Europe every day. Just this summer, over 1500 Africans have lost their lives this way.

ABOUT THE CREW

Maggie Peren DIRECTOR & SCREENPLAY

Maggie Peren, born May 7, 1974 in Heidelberg, wrote her fi rst script “Forget America” (Vergiss America) in 1997 during her studies of literature at University of Munich. “Forget America” was fi lmed in 1999 with Vanessa Joop as director and received honors such as the First Steps Award in 2000 and the Bavarian Film Award in 2001. After “Forget America”, she worked on the script “Phantom” with director Dennis Gansel, which was produced for German TV in 1999 and won several Grimme Awards. One year later, in 2001, she developed the script to the theatrical hit “Girls on Top” (Mädchen, Mädchen), co-written with Christian Zübert and directed by Dennis Gansel. Four more scripts followed, among them the theatrical fi lm “Altogether” (Ganz und Gar) and the TV production “Kiss and Run”, for which Maggie Peren received the Screenplay Award of the MFG Film Fund Baden-Württemberg and a silver Grimme Award for screenplay and acting. The script for “Napola” (co-authored by Dennis Gansel) was awarded with a German Film Award as best yet-to-be fi lmed screenplay before shooting in autumn/winter 2003/2004. In 2003, Maggie Peren wrote the script for “My Parents” (Meine Eltern), which received more than 30 awards at short fi lm and student fi lm festivals, among them the ChannelFour Audience Award in London. “Hypochondriac” (Hypochonder) was Maggie Peren’s debut as a director. She was awarded the Blind Spot Director Award at the Hamburg Film Festival. She began writing “Special Escorts” (Stellungswechsel) with co-writer Christian Bayer in summer 2004. The fi lm was completed in 2007 and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Two years later, she wrote “Hands Off Mississippi” (Hände weg von Missisippi) with co-writer Stefan Schaller, which became a hit children’s fi lm, based on a novel by popular German author Cornelia Funke and directed by Detlev Buck. The movie received Bavarian and German Film Awards for Best Children’s Film. The short fi lm “To Each His Own” (Jedem das Seine), again co-written with Stefan Schaller, was screened as part of the German Perspective Cinema at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008. COLOR OF THE OCEAN (Die Farbe des Ozeans) is the second fi lm directed by Maggie Peren and won the Bernhard Wicki Award at the 2011 Munich Film Festival.
