Welcome
Welcome to Sacred Heart Academy’s presentation of Les
Misérables School Edition. All involved have worked
extremely hard to prepare this amazing program. The
vision and leadership Morgan and Katie have brought
to this program is a true blessing. Please thank them and
all people whose names appear on the pages that follow,
especially on pages 7 and 14.
“The Bishop Works.” That is the title of the chapter
from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables in which the Bishop
of Digne, known in the book as Monseigneur Welcome
(“Bienvenu”), performs his incredible act of mercy for
Jean Valjean that sets the play in motion. While this
work of the Bishop is alone worthy of your
contemplation, you should also consider reading the
book. Hugo’s description of the Bishop and how he
comes to be God’s instrument to save Valjean is worth
it alone. Importantly, the Bishop’s disposition to share
God’s mercy pervades the entire encounter with
Valjean. Valjean is disarmed by the Bishop’s kindness
from the beginning even if he is incapable of
understanding it. This is a great reminder to all of us to
welcome with kindness the strangers we encounter daily
regardless of the circumstances. Following the Bishop’s
example, I will close by adding that if you are a stranger
to Sacred Heart, please accept my sincere welcome!
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Sean Maltbie

A Special Message
Sacred Heart Academy’s Theatre Arts Program is beyond
excited to present Les Misérables School Edition to our repertoire of
performances. This show is no small endeavor! Everything from the
complexity of the music and incorporating a live orchestra to the
intensity of the plot itself - we have plunged into new waters! Many
new students, both cast and crew, have been involved in this year’s
production which has been a gift to our theatre arts program.
This year is the first year we were not able to cast all who auditioned. As we continue to see year-after-year the growth of this
program, we do hope to see more and more students involved and
plan to make adjustments moving forward to make this as much of
a reality as possible. Our dream for this production was to have live
music for our talented students and enhance the theatre experience
for everyone. So it started with a conversation with Ann Reinhard
from Catholic Central High School where we inquired about
musicians for our live orchestra. Ann agreed to partner with us
and put us in contact with a conductor, Claire Salinas from Grand
Valley State University’s Music School, where we also hired several
other musicians for our orchestra.
This show is different than many of our previous shows particularly in length, profundity and difficulty of music (and not to mention the entire musical is sung)! “At The End of The Day”, it has taken work
from all the cast, crew, parent volunteers, and many more to even
make this show a reality and we are beyond grateful to see it come
to fruition. Do You Hear The People Sing?...because we hope that
this musical awakens something in you as it does in us! We hope you
are deeply touched by the performance and that you come not only
once, but One Day More!
Ms. Morgan Anding & Ms. Katie Lennon, Directors

Our Story
In nineteenth century France, Jean Valjean is released from years of
unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life,
initiating a lifelong struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued
by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change
his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must
confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the
student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean's
adopted daughter.
Epic, grand and uplifting, Les Misérables School Edition packs an
emotional wallop that has thrilled audiences all over the world. The
sung-through piece is ideal for a cast of exceptional singers and over-
flows with melodies that are already standards. This author-approved edition has been abridged to a running time of just over two hours
while beautifully maintaining the integrity of this musical masterpiece.

Sacred Heart Academy is a parish apostalate of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish located across from John Ball Zoo on the west side of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
We are a small diocesan school in Grand Rapids with a big vision for Catholic education. Our educational ministry, serving families with children in preschool through 12th grade, is guided by a simple mission: We are “a parish apostolate dedicated to assisting families, forming Catholics, and cultivating culture.”
Having ministered to the West Side of Grand Rapids for over a hundred years, Sacred Heart’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence flows from the sacramental life of the Church. While growing in love of what is true, good and beautiful, students are formed and edified by daily Mass, weekly Adoration, and monthly Reconciliation.

Sacred Heart Academy Theatre Arts Program is proud to
present our first ever full-length musical, Les Misérables School
Edition! Not only is this our first full-length musical but it is also our first time with live orchestration! Our program has continued to develop not only in number of cast and crew
members, but also in talent! This performance we partnered
with Catholic Central High School for live orchestra and we
hope to continue this connection as our program expands! We
have been overwhelmed by the love and support from all those
involved in the Theatre Arts Program. The program is just at its
beginning stages of development and can only grow from here!
From on-stage talent to stage crew you will not be disappointed
with this moving, entertaining and classic musical performance
from students in the city of Grand Rapids.
