But this commitment can only be realized if we develop a consciousness for recycling. Here’s what I mean. Several weeks ago, the priests of our diocese gathered for a welcoming luncheon with Bishop Seigel. After we shared a wonderful meal together, several priests were cleaning the tables. As they did so, I remember thinking...most of the stuff they are throwing away could be recycledplastic silverware, plastic plates and cups. But it’s not enough to just think that things could be recycled. You have to actually do something. Now I could have gone up to the folks and said, “hey, we can recycle most of that stuff.” And they would probably have allowed me to do that. But that would mean that I would have to take the time to separate out all the stuff that could be recycled and then have something to put the recycled items in and then have a place to take the recycled items. That’s a lot of work. It would be much easier to ignore my thoughts about recycling and do nothing. Which is exactly what I did. Being conscious of recycling really boils down to being intentional. It’s more than just saying I believe in recycling. Actually, being intentional is at the heart of a lot of things. This week, we celebrate Valentine’s Day. If there is anything that requires being intentional, it is certainly a relationship between people. You can say all the right wordsI care about you, you are important to me, I love you—but they won’t mean anything unless the words are followed up with concrete actions. This year, for the first time since 1945, Valentine Day and Ash Wednesday (the begin- ning of Lent) are on the same day. Actually, that is not bad. Lent is really a time to re- flect on our relationship with God. At the heart of that relationship is the great com- mandment: “to love God and to love our neighbor as our self.” And once again we get back to being intentional. We can talk about love all we want, but if we do not follow it up with concrete actions, than, as St. Paul tells us, “we are a noisy gong or a clanging symbol.” Traditionally, our church offers us three things we can do during Lent to be intentional about our relationship with God: prayer, fast- ing and almsgiving. But these things, too, can be just actions we undertake, with little effect on the way we see the world or how we live in relationship with the world. What we get back to is thisif we want to be serious about loving God and loving our neighbor, then we have to develop a consciousness and desire to see who our neighbor is. Once we become aware of who are neighbor is, then it takes more effort to actually do the work of being a neighbor. All this requires being intentional. You have to want to be aware of your neighbor. You have to want to have the heart and mind of Jesus. You have to want to be a disciple. But it doesn't stop with just wanting it. You have to then do the work of actually being a neighbor, being a disciple and the hard work of forming our hearts to be the heart of Jesus in the world. And that work does not begin and end with Lent, but continues all our life. So, come and join us this Wednesday as we begin the Season of Lent. Let’s commit our- selves once again to developing the intentional effort of being disciples and praying for the courage to follow through. Leaning into the journey of life , Fr. Gene Schroeder P.S. P.S. Thanks to all the folks in the PTO for their hard work they did planning and executing the Valentine Dinner, Dance and Auction. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

If there were love of neighbor

there would be no terrorism,

no repression,

no selfishness,

none of such cruel inequalities in society,

no abductions,

no crimes.

Love sums up the law.

Not only that, it gives Christian meaning

to all human relations. . . .

Love gives plenitude to all human duties,

and without love, justice is only the sword.

With love, justice becomes a brother’s embrace.

Without love, laws are arduous, repressive, cruel,

mere policemen.

But when there is love—

security forces would be superfluous;

there would be no jails or tortures,

no will to beat anyone.

Today we celebrate World Marriage Day. We honor all married couples especially these couples in our par-

ish who are celebrating special wedding anniversaries this year

Fr. Lowell Will, a son of our parish, is cele-brating the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. He was ordained on March 2, 1968. Fr. Will and the parish community of St. Clement in Boonville invite you to join in this celebration at

a special Mass on Sunday, March 4 at 2 pm at St. Clement Church. A dinner and reception will fol-lowing, beginning at 4 pm at the Warrick County 4-H Center (133 E. Degonia Road in Boonville). For dinner reservation contact (812-897-2631 or email [email protected].

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the assassina-tion of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we offer reflections, ques-tions, prayers, and actions for the season of Lent based on each week’s Gospel reading and the six principles of nonviolence of-fered by Dr. King in Stride Toward Freedom, his memoir of the 1957 Montgomery bus boycott. According to Dr. King, the book is ‘‘the chronicle of 50,000 Negroes who took to heart the princi-ples of nonviolence, who learned to fight for their rights with the weapon of love, and who in the process, acquired a new estimate

of their own human worth.” Go to https://maryknollogc.org/resources/lenten-reflection-guide-2018
