Finley Launches Its Cardiac Program

A new era has begun at The Finley Hospital. Ushered in by the State of Iowa’s approval for a Certificate of Need (CON) for a cardiac catheterization lab, and reinforced by the Finley Health Foundation’s successful 2012 Gala, Miracles on the Mississippi, Finley has officially gone

cardio.

Much has happened over the past nine months that promises dramatic access to services for the care of cardiac patients who come to Finley. Here are some highlights:

• Finley announces its intent to develop a full-service cardiovascular program, including a cardiac cath lab. In January, Finley applies to the state for a CON, which would enable it to proceed with the cath lab project.

• In April Dr. Tauseef Khan, arrives at Finley as the medical director of the Finley Heart and Vascular Center. Dr. Khan, working in partnership with Cardiologists, LC, based in Cedar Rapids, will provide a range of high-quality heart services not previous seen at Finley.

• Finley received its CON approval from the state on May 23 and immediately begins renovations that will enable cardiac caths by as soon as September 1.

• The first Miracles on the Mississippi Gala, held on June 15 at the Hotel Julien raises more than $110,000 ($85,000 net) to support the Heart & Vascular Center. (See page 5 for more Gala details and photos.)

“You could hardly script a more active and impactful time in Finley’s history than what we are experiencing today,” says David Brandon, president and CEO. “This is a credit to the many physicians, employees, board members and community friends who have assisted us in this ongoing journey to best serve the residents of the tri-states. We thank all of them for their continued support.”

Finley Hospital was a major participant in the American Heart Walk.

The cardiac catheterization lab, now under construction and due to open September 1, will use the very latest in state-of-the-art technology.

My first 18 months as Finley’s president and CEO have flown past. The job has been, at the same time, challenging and ultimately rewarding. My transition to Dubuque was eased by working at a

great community hospital with outstanding physicians; skilled, compassionate staff; and a tremendously supportive community.

These qualities will continue to serve us well as we enter into a very growth-focused phase in our history. The State of Iowa’s recent approval of our Certificate of Need application to open a cardiac catheterization

lab lays the groundwork for an expanded cardiac service. The Heart and Vascular Center at Finley Hospital, led by Dr. Tauseef Khan, will enhance the level of cardiac care available to Finley patients and all tri-state residents.

Also, within the next year, Finley will begin preparations for a major data information conversion, part of the Iowa Health System’s aggressive program to enhance and simplify the communication of health information between physicians, payors and patients. With the installation of the Epic system, patients of Finley and all of its IHS affiliate hospitals will benefit from an information system that stresses quality and seamless communication via the Electronic Medical Record.

The past year also saw Finley meet and exceed vital patient care measures that will determine future payments for Medicare and Medicaid. Our frequency of hospital-acquired infections and patient falls is down, and patient satisfaction scores continue to climb. We are pleased, but not satisfied, with these metrics as health care rapidly moves closer to a “pay for performance” model.

I am pleased to share this information with you, our trusted friends and donors. Without your support, none of these important initiatives can be possible.

A MESSAGE FROM DAVID BRANDON, FACHE, PRESIDENT AND CEO

We in the tri-states have a lot to be

proud of. Anchored by a renaissance by the City of Dubuque, our community has become quite the place to work and raise a family.

Our town’s turnaround did not happen by chance or by virtue of any single happening. Rather, our rise is the result of decades of effort on the part of thousands of committed, talented people. Outstanding talent was recruited from across the country while native Dubuquers returned home to be a part of the resurgence. The result: Dubuque recently was

named an All-American City for the second time in five years.

The Finley Hospital also has blossomed during Dubuque’s rebirth. It has done so with the same pursuit of excellence demonstrated throughout our community. The addition of a comprehensive cardiac program is the logical next step to being a first-rate community hospital for a first-rate community.

As chair of the Finley Health Foundation Board of Directors, I am proud to play a small role in Finley’s development. In this town, we expect the very best.

Finley Meets dubuque expectations:

Grants Fund Hospital Programs

Over the years, The Finley Hospital has benefited from generous grants made by local tri-state organizations. This year is no different as recently announced grants are funding important Finley programs and projects.

The Dubuque Racing Association (DRA)/Mystique Casino funds many worthy organizations in the tri-states, and Finley is fortunate to be among them. This year the Foundation secured a $10,251 DRA grant to purchase a motorized stretcher for the Radiology Department. As patients get larger the need for equipment that

allows staff to safely transport them throughout the hospital grows more urgent. DRA grants to Finley and the VNA have now surpassed $460,000.

Once again, the Fraternal Order of Eagles has chosen to support Finley through its grassroots fundraising efforts. Grants made for 2012 have been designated for diabetes education ($2,500), the Wendt Regional Cancer Center ($5,000) and for family programs at the VNA ($230).

These grant awards enable Finley to build and grow clinical programs that make a real difference in the lives of those in our community. We thank these organizations for their community focus and for placing their confidence in Finley to be responsible stewards with their dollars.

Maybe It’s Time for estate Planning

Planning for the management of our estate for after we die is not something we enjoy thinking about, much less discussing. Yet, for many who do not make the appropriate preparations, they risk their assets not being used as they would have wished after death, particularly being lost to taxes.

The Finley Health Foundation offers estate planning services, free of charge, to friends and donors in the community. These unbiased, professional services are provided by Thompson & Associates out of Nashville, TN, one of the country’s leading estate planning firms. Thompson and Associates’ only task is to assist Finley friends in planning their estates according to their wishes.

Here are several reasons why the estate planning process through Finley is worth considering:

• This service is provided completely free of charge and with no obligation. The Finley Health Foundation pays Thompson & Associates on a retainer basis. • All information shared in the estate planning process is confidential. • Estate planning clients will not be asked to purchase products or to allow another party to manage their money. • After your estate plan has been completed, clients can take the recommendations to their own legal/ financial advisors to complete the implementation process.

If you are unsure how taxes will impact your estate, or if you own a business, or you have heirs you wish to provide for, estate planning services may be right for you. For more information, call Dan McCarthy at the Finley Health Foundation at 563.589.2358.

Michael Duehr, from Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 568-Dubuque (second from right) presents a check for $5,000 to David Brandon, Finley president and chief executive officer. Joining them are Diana Batchelor, Finley chief nursing officer; Dr. Bobby Koneru, medical director of the Wendt Regional Cancer Center, and Mike Kelly, administrative director of the Wendt Center.

11The Finley Hospital is fortunate to have many friends and supporters in the tri-state area, perhaps none more committed than the financial services sector. Over the years, our community’s banks, credit unions, wealth managers and insurance providers have played a significant role in the success of Finley health care services through their

philanthropic and volunteer efforts.

Here are some examples of how these institutions have demonstrated their support to Finley:• Dubuque Bank & Trust recently announced a new product, a Pink Debit Card, and will donate a percentage of each

transaction to the Wendt Regional Cancer Center. These funds will enable the Wendt Center to acquire a positioning device to aid in the delivery of radiation to women with breast cancer.

• u.S. Bank was a major sponsor of the 2012 Gala, and its Senior Vice President/Trust Relationship manager, Barb Potts was this year’s event chair.

• Premier Bank made a generous gift to the Wendt Center and provided volunteers to assist at the Gala.• Dupaco Community Credit Union has been a stalwart donor to Finley capital campaigns and also participates as a

sponsor of Finley’s popular Pink the Rink Night.• American Trust & Savings Bank, Liberty Bank and State Central Bank, along with such firms as Honkamp-Krueger and

Co., Herrig & Herrig Financial Services, Steele Capital Management, Platinum Services, Cottingham & Butler, Kunkel & Associates, Heartland Financial and Eide Bailly, have made important contributions to Finley through campaign gifts and event participation.

Aside from their financial contributions, these organizations also encourage their executives and staff to volunteer for numerous worthy community organizations. Finley has benefited mightily from this executive volunteerism, as many financial services leaders have served on Finley boards and assisted with fundraising campaigns.

When these companies talk about “giving back to the community,” we at Finley know they mean it.
