Season Greetings from the Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills.

IIt has been a busy month with travel to support of the Kingdom of Atlantia and our Barony. We went far to the south to attend their Majesties Crown Tournament, a great day of fighting, comradery, and the selection of heirs to the Crown, Anton and Luned. Again, we traveled south, but not as far, to help Dun

Carraig celebrate their Birthday, it was a day of friends and celebration. We ended the month with another trip south, has anyone noticed that everything is south of Bright Hills, to Steirbach’s Holiday Faire, a day of fun and shopping as well as catching up with friends.

We will be in attendance at UnEvent on December 7th, we will also be at Kingdom 12th night on the 18th of January to celebrate with Atlantia.

We bid the populace to plan on attending Bright Hill’s Baronial 12th Night on January 10th. We also want to remind our populace that we will be having our Birthday celebration on February 8th, the Royals will be joining us to celebrate all that is Bright Hills. The Baroness and I will be picking our champions for the coming year. We would ask that the current champions for Bardic, Arts and Science, and Brewing please run a competition to help us select the new champions. If you are unable please let us know.

It is a busy time of year for all of us, as we celebrate the winter solstice and Yule, please remember the ones you love, your friends and those that are not here.

We wish all a joyous season.

Godai Katsunaga and Wanda the WandererBaron and Baroness of Bright Hills

Minutes of the Bright Hills Business MeetingMinutes of the Bright Hills Business MeetingNovember 15, 2019 - 7:24 p.m.

Attendees: Casey Keener, Randy Feltman,Sherrill Branson, Howard Jacobson, Richard Muti, Victoria Wank, Becky Ritterhouse, Hunter Fowler, MyLinda Butterworth, Jill Crowther-Peters, Karen Whitlock, Debbie Eccles, Gordon & Wanda Lee Kinnie, and Michelle England.

Report from the Baronage:Report from the Baronage: (Gordon & Wanda Lee Kinnie) Irish Festival was not only fun but very successful. The Baron suggest that we have a banner that can be put in front of table, he is willing to assume the cost. We went to Crown Tourney and it was fun, Dun Carraig birthday. We started a new tradition of giving a basket of toys on birthday we attend. We will be at Holiday Faire and Unevent. Please submit awards.

Officer ReportsOfficer Reports:Seneschal: Freydis sjona (Casey Keener) — There will be no practice 11/29, 12/20, and 12/27. We need to select a date for Baronial 12th night. If Baltimore schools are closed then so are we. We are getting some nastigrams from the Kingdom about reports not being turned in on time. If it is not done in a timely manner we can be put on notice. Officers need to show up for your job. We represent ourselves - we are the bridge for the society to the real world. Show up and do your job. Practices - we will need to renegotiate with the church and we need to decide now on where we are going to meet and how many times a month. I have done a 2020 projection and we are going to be in the hole. I estimate we will spend about $10,000 but we only generate about $6,000. For the church alone we are looking at $4000. It is suggested that we only hold practices twice a month, I suggest the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month. Communication between officers and the populace must be open for business to happen. It is suggested that we use the coronet fund as a repair fund as we have several items that are in need of repair.Chronicler: Lady Scholastica Joycors (MyLinda Butterworth) — Yeoman out on time. Officer information needs to be updated. Exchequer: Lady Clara von Wonsiedel (Clara ) — Hey I'm back. Requests for funds should only come from the autocrat. Troll should meet with me 2 weeks before event and needs to follow rules. Hopefully all signatures and materials should be transferred soon. Please review the financial policy for next month.Webminister: Lady Dagný austkona ( Rachael Knoblauch) — We have now transitioned completely from Yahoo to Google Groups. All data will be backed up from the Yahoo groups by Dec. 6. For the time being, I will store it personally; however, I will also look into potential platforms for online sharing these documents.Birthday has been added to the website and to the official facebook pageHerald: Master Richard Wyn (Richard Muti) — Nothing new to report, normal consultations continue to be worked on by our heralds..MoAS: Baroness Tatiana Ivanovna of Birchwood Keep (Claudia Bosworth)— Third quarter reports have been made and submitted. no current pressing business. Glad I have effective deputy.Chatelain: Baroness Barbara Giumaria diRoberto (Barbara Kriner) — This month we have had 3 requests for information via email. We also had 3 newcomers visit with us on Nov. 8 and Nov. 1st. They will be returning. We also participated in the Maryland Irish Festival last weekend. Thanks to all the Bright Hills and Owlshurst folks who volunteered during the 3 days. I think we presented a pretty good display. Based on interval observation, I

Guild ReportsGuild Reports:Cooks Guild:. Greetings from Jeanne Tenneur de Bec, Mistress of the Bright Hills Cooks’

Guild. The Cooks’ Guild met on November 10, at the home of Dame Deirdre.Dame Wynne reported that there isno further update on the Harvest Wars feast. The

Guild, under her able guidance, provided the feast. The feast was well received, but unfortunately, the event was not well attended.

The next Royal Archery event will be held in April 2020. The Guild has agreed to provide lunch as a fundraiser. Mistress Bec has offered to organize the lunch.

We discussed the feast for Baronial Birthday. The Guild will provide the feast (the bid has a per head fee of $10 / person, for a headcount of 80). The event is scheduled to be a Royal Progress. Mistress Jeanne will serve as the Head Cook. Because unicorns are key to the event theme, and the famous unicorn tapestries are from 14 th century France, the menu will be based on the cuisine of that period. We identified several items for the menu, based on the theme and the whims of Their Excellencies.

Trial by Fire 2020 has been spiked for 9/12/2020. Dame Wynne is the autocrat. The Lochmere Arrow competition will NOT be part of this event.

At the last Baronial Meeting, the Cooks’ Guild’s proposal regarding ownership of the trailer and transferal to the Guild was discussed. There were additional issues raised that require further investigation.

The next meeting will be Sunday, December 8, at the home of Mistress Cordelia and Baron Barre.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact me directly. I can be reached by phone at 410-239-8794, or by e-mail at [email protected]..

Old BusinessOld Business:Harvest Wars - Clara and Tatiana got report in on time, but the event was $949 in the

hole. It was recommended that we don't do any events this time a year again. It was poorly attended with only 62 adults and 10 kids. We could have done with one less porta john. Feast was under budget , but poorly attended. Funds for down payment should always be done through the barony and not paid for by the individual. Worst part of it all was that it was not attended well by our own barony. Suggest maybe do this event every other year.

Trial by Fire will have it's usual competition noon-4 PM, followed by court. Suggest we have competitions be based on food, bardic, archery and heavy fighting. It will be held at the Baltimore Bowman. If there is camping there should be a fee.

Birthday - Flyers are now in Acorn. All major people are in place. This will be a Royal Progress. Please contact Dagny about making a FB event page.

Cooks Guild - The trailer is registered to SCA INC Barony of Brihgt Hills, at Lady

Yseulte's address. The title has not been located, but Bec has said she will get the VIN number from the trailer and do what is necessary to get a copy.

The trailer is a 1991 model. The bulk of the serving/cooking has been removed from the trailer. What remains in the trailer is canvas pavilion with poles and stakes, a few signs, the Glastonbury chairs (which should be trashed) and a large fire extinguisher.

If the Barony decides to retain the trailer, all that will need to be stored in the trailer would be the 3 pavilions. It will need new tires and a new home.

If the Barony determines to transfer the trailer to the Cooks' Guild, the Guild will take responsibility for transferring the title and registration and any necessary costs associated with getting it inspected.

The Baron is willing to store all the baronial stuff.

How Do I Get Involved in Scribal Work?

by Baroness Aemilia Rosa

Have you ever looked at the scrolls presented, wondering if you could do the same? How is it done and how you get started? If you answered yes to any of those then perhaps the following will be of some help to you.

In the SCA, in the Kingdom of Atlantia, one of the ways we like to show appreciation for someone’s hard work, dedication or artistic endeavors is by presenting them with an award and a scroll. This is done on a Kingdom level as well as a Baronial level.

A Brief DescriptionA scroll is a document that states that a person has been

given an award. It requires the following information: • Greeting• The recipient’s name • The first names of King and Queen (or Baron/

Baroness) • The name of the award, image of the award (Opal,

Pearl, etc) • Date the award was given • Event the award was given out • Group where it was given out

(If possible, the Clerk Signet Office will give the reason for the award to make it more personalized.)

The wording for the scrolls can be found in The Atlantian Scribal Handbook http://scribe.atlantia.sca.org/scriptorium/index.php. Once you become accustomed to designing scrolls and the text, you can design your own wording AS LONG as it contains the above information.

ALL scroll information you receive is to remain private between you and the Clerk Signet’s office. Don’t forget to sign the back of your scroll. It gives the recipient the chance to thank you, but it also lets the Herald know who is doing the work and have your name read aloud in court, a moment you should be proud of. Always sign in pencil.

Page 10: The Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/wp...Yeoman-1913.pdf · 12/12/2019  · The Yeoman • December 2019 2 Volume 33 - Issue 13 This is the December 2019,

The Yeoman • December 2019 10 Volume 33 - Issue 13

Tools RequiredLike any other art form, creating a scroll requires the use of some basic tools. I have also included some of my

own personal favorites* that I have learned along the way.• Mechanical pencil (*I use a drafting pencil, it’s heavier in my hand and comes with eraser refills) • Slide Ruler, a wonderful tool for making lines• T Square • Ames Lettering Guide (for lining your paper/parchment for calligraphy) Curved exacto knives (for

scraping) • Drafting Brush* (perfect for brushing away eraser bits) • Gum sandarac • Micron pens size 005 for outlining or a very tiny paint brush or quill • Circle template (even the most skilled artist has a hard time drawing a perfect circle, save yourself some

time and invest in one of these, you will be glad you did) • Toolbox, artist box, you will need someplace to put all of these things and a portable way to bring them to

scriptoriums, classes, etc.

PaperOne thing you will learn as a scribe is that the surface you work on matters. You will need to work on a clean

flat surface. If you are able, invest or make a small wooden sloped writing desk. There are different types of paper and parchment available. The paper should be 100% rag, acid free paper. (rag

is the percentage of cotton used in the paper). For beginners just learning, there is a vellum style Bristol board. I would caution you that this paper is unforgiving if you make a mistake in ink or paint and I usually recommend Arches Hot Press Paper to start. It should be 90 Lbs. or higher for the weight and can handle gouache and period pigments as well as dip pens or cartridge pens. Heavy weight pergamenta which is a PH neutral paper, takes on the look of parchment and is 100% cellulose. There is also opaline vellum, which is boiled vellum scraps molded and pressed as paper, and significantly less expensive than real parchment which is made from animal skin.

Painting SuppliesBelow is a list of painting supplies that you will need to add to your box of supplies. Which kind of paint

depends on which you prefer. With the proper care a good brush will last you a long time. If you can, invest in a natural brush such as sable. If

they are too costly, you can go with synthetic brushes. Recommended are sizes 0-000 for lining and small detail, and for the larger areas sizes 13 work well.

• Brush holder *Michaels Craft store has great roll up brush holders for a very small price. • Water holder (for rinsing out paintbrushes during painting) • Palette for your paints *cosmetic containers are great for storing leftover paint! Paints - Gouache, highly

pigmented they are as close to period pigments as you can come. Another paint is egg tempera, which is made by mixing pigment with egg yolk, however, you can now buy these paints in tubes sold by manufacturers such as Sennelier. These paints do have a small amount of oil in them to preserve the paints but they are fine for use. Watercolors, not as recommended but they are still used. Acrylics, not recommended by most yet there are some artists who make gorgeous artwork with them. What to avoid? Oil paints, crayons, magic markers, sharpies.

• Brands – this depends on what you are willing to spend. You can get a basic set of Reeves gouache at Walmart or Michaels and not pay a fortune. There is also Schminke, and the highest quality and price would be Holbein. Again, personal preference and what you are willing to spend.

Page 11: The Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/wp...Yeoman-1913.pdf · 12/12/2019  · The Yeoman • December 2019 2 Volume 33 - Issue 13 This is the December 2019,

The Yeoman • December 2019 11 Volume 33 - Issue 13

Calligraphy SuppliesCartridge pen with cartridge refills (*I highly recommend Rotring, they are made in Germany but you can find

them on Amazon or John Neal’s and they have a wide variety of nib widths if you’re willing to do the research) • Dip pen if you go this route you will need a nib holder and a nice variety of nibs widths (*personally I use

Brause but again this is personal preference.) • Ink well to put your ink in, you need to see where you are dipping your pen. Paintbrush, sometimes it is

easier to brush on the ink to your nib so as not to overload your nib, thus causing an overflow of ink onto the paper.

Basic Scroll LayoutScrolls can vary in size. One good rule of thumb is to keep the area the same size you would see in the size of

picture frames. If you do not intend to mat and frame the scroll yourself (which is not required) then you want to keep the scroll at a size the recipient can easily mat and/or frame.

Basic Scroll Sizes - 5x7, 8x10, 11x14 Before beginning your artwork you will need to create a margin. I prefer at least 1-2" of a border before

starting on the design. Go to a craft store and purchase a few mat sizes. Measure the width of the mat. You can get a general idea of how wide or narrow mats are. This will also help in your design process.

How Do I Design a Scroll? The first thing to designing a scroll is getting your source of inspiration. Who are you making the scroll for? Do

you know their persona? Do they have a particular skill? Many times you can put in little bits of their information in the illumination, ex: Lady Jane is a weaver and has a Norse persona. Sometimes you might not know anything except their name and gender and you have to go from there. It just takes patience and persistence to find the right historical resource. Many times you will see scrolls with only parts of the historical documents.

How Do I Get Involved? When you are ready to start making scrolls for your Barony/Canton/Shire, contact your Baronial Clerk Signet

or local scriptorium. If you are interested in creating scrolls for Kingdom there are two choices, for current scrolls that will be given in future courts you will need to contact your Clerk Signet at [email protected]. If you wish to work on backlogged scrolls, contact the Backlog Deputy.

GingerbredeFrom Two Fifteenth Century Cookbooks (1888)– Harleian MS 279 (Page 35) .iiij. Gyngerbrede.–Take a quart of hony, & sethe it, & skeme it clene; take Safroun, pouder Pepir, & throw ther-on; take grayted Bred, & make it so chargeaunt that it wol be y-lechyd; then take pouder Canelle, & straw ther-on y-now; then make yt square, lyke as thou wolt leche yt; take when thou lechyst hyt, an caste Box leves a-bouyn, y-stykyd ther-on, on clowys. And if thou wolt haue it Red, coloure it with Saunderys y-now Gingerbread- Take a quart of honey and boil it, and skim it clean; take Saffron, powdered pepper, & throw thereon; take grated bread, & make it so stiff that it will be leched (sliced); then take cinnamon & strew on enough; then make it square, like thou will slice it; take when thou slice it, and cast box leaves above, and stuck on with cloves. And if thou would like it Red, color it with enough sandalwood.

Ingredients:340 g. honey (or approx. 1 cup) 1 ¾ c. plain breadcrumbs1/8 – ¼ tsp. White pepper 1 tsp. Ginger (optional)1 tsp. Cinnamon Pinch saffron (optional)

Bring honey to a boil and skim the top. Turn the heat down to very low, add spices and mix. I like to add half of the cinnamon at this step and brush the rest on later, but it tastes just as good if you mix it all in now.

Slowly add the breadcrumbs and mix until it becomes firm and well blended. You may need to add more breadcrumbs to reach the desired thickness. Once you can’t easily mix with a spoon and the honey mixture becomes a thick mass, it is ready to roll out.

Roll it out flat onto a baking sheet or other large surface. It will be quite sticky, so either grease the baking sheet well or use parchment paper. I like to roll it out between two sheets of parchment paper before I let it cool.

The parchment paper will stick to the gingerbread as it dries, so I suggest flipping the rolled out gingerbread and replacing both pieces of paper at some point during the cooling process. If you didn’t add cinnamon in step one, now is the time to sprinkle it over the flattened dough and try to spread or brush it around evenly, as a sort of coating.

Once it has cooled completely, slice into squares. The pieces can be as large or as thick as you would like, but I tend to make smallish pieces for a better flavor and spiciness ratio. You could also roll into balls or push into a mould, but you’ll have better results if you do that when the dough is still slightly warm.

Stick a clove in the square to garnish. If you really want to put some boxwood leaves on there be warned that they are poisonous. You won’t be ingesting the leaves, but I still wouldn’t advise you to put them anywhere near your food.

If you want to color the gingerbread red, coat it with powdered sandalwood. Edible sandalwood can be difficult to find and it will alter the taste. Sandalwood was the most common 15th century method of coloring foods red.

A History of Christmas Music by Kylie Harwell-Sturgil

WW hether it's music by the Sufjan Stevens or 12th-Century composers from Paris, the music of Christmas has always brought joy, awe, and festivity. Likewise, it is in celebrating the rich history of the music of Christmas that we can appreciate how traditions have changed but the meaning of the holiday has

remained. Here is a short history of Christmas music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Pre-Carolinginan Christmas Carols (aka, Music before Charlemagne)The earliest Christmas music was likely written in the 4th Century by St. Ambrose of Milan, and it was actually

a religious political statement. His piece, Veni redemptor gentium ("Come, Redeemer of the nations"), was actually written as an anti-Arianist statement. (Arianism being the early Christian theory of inequality in the Trinity, as opposed to mainstream churches.) The context of this song evokes a sense of St. Ambrose trying to convey the equality, and therefore divinity, of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Since it was written for the Advent season, it especially signifies the divinity of Jesus of Nazareth.

Early Medieval Polyphonic Christmas MusicThe 'Ars Antiqua' age of polyphonic composition at the Cathedral de Notre Dame in Paris began in the 12th

Century and is commonly attributed to a composer known as Léonin. Everything known about Léonin and his successor, Perotin, comes from a music history text written in Paris around 1280 A.D, simply known as "Anonymous 4." One of the most beautiful musical works from this time is, perhaps, the Introït Tropé: Puer Natus Est from Léonin's Christmas Mass. This is by far one of my favorite pieces of music of all time.

Here is the work by Leonin: Introitus-Puer natus nobis est (https://youtu.be/gC1jJC3aBLQ)And here is a much older version of Puer Natus Est from the 6th Century: Old Roman chant - Puer natus est

nobis (https://youtu.be/h_Ez91zGm4Y).

15th Century English CarolsOne of the most interesting characters of this repertoire is John "the blynde" Audelay. Audelay was a secular

chaplain who retired to a chantry priesthood Haughmond Abbey in Shropshire, England. His music, prose, poetry and general writing display the oddness of Medieval authorship. Since writers during his time did not need to concern themselves with copyright laws or legal suits for authorship, their writings were a mixture of stolen, borrowed, new, and paraphrased works. This might seem odd, but it provides us with a better sense of not just what one person imagined, but rather, what they knew and derived from all they read. His largest musical contribution was likely his 25, "caroles of Cristemas" which were likely the first written English carols.

Listen to "Be Merry, Be Merry I pray you" a Medieval Carol (https://youtu.be/LcBNdY5Wlgg)Unfortunately his works are difficult to find, but there are many similar carols and songs of Christmas, and

contemporary composer John Rutter even set some of Audelay's poetry as choral music. (https://youtu.be/htXAtzPyeUg).

Wassail! Of course, when it comes to songs of Christmas, we cannot forget Wassailing. The history of the English

Wassail actually dates back much farther than most written English carols, and can be traced to the time of the Norman conquests of 1066 A.D. In the Middle Ages, wassailing was a means for the feudal peasants who lived

on the land of their lord to be invited to the lord's manner and to dine and drink together and enjoy the bounty of his table. The drink itself comes in a lovely variety of spiked punches and hot, mulled ciders.

Here is a traditional Gloucester Wassail: (https://youtu.be/tzv5eGTxvi4)

Christmas During The European Renaissance Johannes of Ockeghem was regarded by his peers and the composers who followed as being the most gifted

composer of vocal polyphony on record. His works greatly influenced prolific composers after him such as Josquin des Prez and Guillaume Dufay. Here is his cantus firmus work, Ave Maria: https://youtu.be/jHh-x2exEyg

The music of Josquin des Prez (1455 – 27 August 1521) is regarded as some of the most glorious polyphony; its minimalism is arresting and the purity of the vocal lines reflects the desire for balance and openness in Renaissance aesthetics perfectly. Of course, his motet setting of Ave Maria, virgo serena is vital Christmas listening. (https://youtu.be/qXMZoKofu7g)

(Josquin des Prez even respected the work of Johannes Ockeghem so much that he wrote an incredible choral piece decrying the loss of the respected composer and musical genius.)

And of course, you cannot leave out Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, the composer who (in legend) saved polyphonic music for the Catholic Church by the shear glory of his music. He composed nearly 400 sacred works, but one of his most glorious is perfect for the season of Advent; O Magnum Mysterium. (https://youtu.be/D1QjkhENZg8)

TodayThe music we enjoy today for Christmas may sound very different, and although much of it is written with

instruments our Medieval ancestors could have never imagined, I like to think they would have enjoyed a few of these selections. (https://youtu.be/hOot8OEI_ok) (https://youtu.be/BeHunHocp5Q), (https://youtu.be/106beqd6EeE).

Deck the halls with crumhorns and sackbutts, it's time for a very Medieval Christmas list of greatest hits from the 4th Century to the 16th. (Johannes Ockeghem's setting of the "Kyrie" from his 'Missa Ecce ancilla Domini,'
