This week is a big week, and an emotional one, for AISHK’s Year 12 students as they take part in two events which signal the beginning of the end of their time here at the school.

At what was the penultimate ‘official’ event as students at AISHK, Year 12s and their parents enjoyed an evening together at the Year 12 Valedictorian Dinner, held in the Auditorium, on Monday (26 September). The dinner, a peaceful evening of conversation and bonding befitting their status as emerging adults, gave students, along with parents and staff, the chance to meet, talk and share some quality time as a group before final exams begin at the start of Term 4.

At this important juncture in their lives, it’s time for these students to think about their future and the kind of global citizens they want to become, says Phillip Waugh, AISHK’s Co-Head and Principal, Secondary Division. “We hope that our Year 12’s take with them the high standards, values and ethics that we have instilled in them during their time with us, including the value of hard work and perseverance, as they begin their adult life.

“They are far more independent now, and soon they will be heading out to all parts of the world to begin a new stage in their lives. We hope that they have benefited from the nurturing we provide here at the school and go on to become positively engaged members of the community.”

The second event, the Secondary Assembly, which took place on Wednesday morning in the Auditorium, was a very special and emotional moment as Year 12’s gathered for Assembly for the last time. Watched on by their parents, teaching staff and most of Secondary Division, the students were presented with their student portfolios by Phillip Waugh and Leonie Drew, heard from a number of fellow students selected to speak and listened to a Valedictory Farewell by Mr Waugh. The final act was the presentation of parting gifts to the Year 12s by AISHK’s Prep Year students, after which they left the Auditorium under a guard of honour.

At this time of celebration, that marks the end of one journey and the start of a new one; the completion of an important stage in their development and the opening up of a whole new world, AISHK congratulates its young ‘champions’ as they go out into the world to make their mark as influential and responsible global citizens.

PRIMARY ASSEMBLIESThe Next Assembly:

Week 9: End of Term Assembly 30 Sep at 11:10amAssemblies on odd weeks begin at 11:10am and even weeks at 11:20am

This week we held the Spelling Cup Championship and then on Thursday we have the Upper Primary Public Speaking Finals. It was also very poignant to be a part of the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner and the Valedictory Assembly which also took place this week.

Term 3 concludes this week and Primary (Prep to Year 6) has the final Term 3 Assembly this Friday at 11:10am. There will not be a lunch break as the children will be dismissed at 12:00pm (noon) so perhaps make sure they have a substantial morning snack to keep them going until they get home.

The children will be bringing home their portfolios for you to look through during the holiday break. We hope you will notice the progress made during the term and certainly great strides made since the commencement of the year. These portfolios need to be returned to school for Term 4 and will then be sent home again at the end of the year when they become yours to keep!

Please remember to complete the parent survey this year. We need as many families as possible to participate in this annual exercise as it helps guide the School’s Executive in its planning for next year. Please take the time to give us your responses as the survey runs until this Friday.

At the end of this term we farewell Ms Marta Chylewski, our Year 3 Leader. We wish her happiness as she returns to Australia for urgent personal reasons. We also say goodbye to the children and their families who are relocating to new countries and hope you will stay in touch with us.

I wish you a very happy and safe holiday break and look forward to welcoming back the children on Tuesday 18 October.

Last Monday evening Year 12 students, their teachers and parents came together for the 2011 Valedictory Dinner, held in our School Auditorium. It was a most enjoyable event and I would like to thank all the parents for their most generous comments regarding both our school in general and our teaching staff in particular. The ongoing support we have received from our parent community over many years is greatly appreciated by everyone at the school. Our Year 12 students were a credit to both their families and to our school, for the manner in which they conducted themselves throughout the entire evening.

Today the school held its 2011 Valedictory Ceremony in the school’s Auditorium. This ceremony represents the formal graduation of Year 12 Class of 2011 from our school and celebrates our senior students’ achievements in reaching this significant milestone in their Secondary education.

As I indicated in the last newsletter the time that now remains before Year 12 external examinations commence in mid- October must be treated as a very valuable commodity; time to be used wisely for comprehensive revision and preparation.

To all our Year 12 graduates, as they now contemplate life after school, I would offer the following advice. “Seek a real purpose in life. Seek to make a positive difference. Make a positive contribution, both to the organisations you ultimately work for, and the broader society in which you live. Employ the skills and talents that each of you have acquired during your time at our school.”

I wish all Year 12 the very best for their upcoming examinations and welcome them formally to the AISHK Alumni. As this is the last newsletter of the Term, I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all our remaining Secondary students and their families a very safe, enjoyable and productive term break.

Chinese Shopping Day Thank YouThank you to the 32 mums and one dad who organised and ran our shopping stalls on Chinese Shopping and Games Day during Chinese Week. The day was a highlight for the children during our special Chinese Week. The parents sold all the items they had stocked up for sale on the day and, without intending to, made a profit of HK$4708.60. This money will be spent by Ms Joy Chung on additional Chinese story books and novels for the library.
