Hinsdale Highlights June 2011 2
Notes from the Superintendent:As yet another school year is coming to a close, I would like to thank Hinsdale community members for the level of
support you give to HCS. The fact that you stand behind the education of our young children and teens is apparent in many
ways: attending a concert or an athletic event, coming into school during Open House or Parent Teacher conferences,
helping out with student fundraisers, voting for budgets, and, of course, paying school taxes. Your efforts are what keep
this small community of learners going in the right direction.
With cuts in state aid, we will be going to six newsletters per year rather than monthly editions. Therefore, we will do
a September/October newsletter early and send it out at the end of August; the next edition will be out in November and
every other month after that. Remember that you can always keep updated via our website, www.hinsdalebobcats.org.
It came to our attention several months ago that the main roof over the oldest part of the building facing Main Street
was rapidly deteriorating. Constructed in the mid 1990-s and with a ten-year guarantee, its ‘shelf life’ has come to an end.
Related to that roof is one other also built at the same time over the science wing; it also needs to be replaced. The Capital
Project that voters accepted in May of 2007 has enough money left in it to provide the replacement of these two roofs.
Since voters already approved the expenditure of that money, another vote is not necessary. Therefore, we have applied
to the State Education Department for approval and hope to get the green light on replacement in June or July. With any
good luck, you may see roofers start working towards the end of summer. This is in line with Hinsdale Central’s continued
effort to keep our building structurally sound and with little local taxpayer financial effort.
During the second week of June, our Senior Class of 2011 will head to Ocean City, Maryland, for a couple of fun
days in the sun and surf. I congratulate them and their Advisor, Sandy Peterson, for working hard the past few years to be
able to afford this trip. They will return to some local and Regents examinations, and then graduate on Sunday, June 26.
Congratulations, graduates and families!
I hope all of our students, graduates, family members and staff have a fun-filled and pleasant summer. With the long
winter we endured this year, it is wonderful to have a chance to travel, play, plant a garden, or just kick back and relax.
Please encourage your young, middle, or teen children to continue reading during the summer. A recent publication of
a study by Harris Cooper, a summer-learning expert at Duke University, pored over a century’s worth of data and found
that each summer, our kids lose about a month of progress in math and that low-income students lose as much as three
months’ worth of reading comprehension.
To all of our students and grads this summer prescription, along with reading: get lots of exercise, eat healthy foods,
and have enjoyable times with family and friends!
Fifth Graders Enjoy Pizza and Ice Cream . . .Congratulations to all grade 5 students for bringing in the most change in the “Pennies for Leukemia” fund-raiser (story and photos on back page). The fifth graders enjoyed pizza and an ice cream social. The prize was sponsored by the Student Council.

D-R Speech ContestThe Dresser-Rand National Leadership
Association sponsored a speech contest for seventh and eighth grade students from our area at the Old Library. The purpose of the contest was to familiarize students with the gas and oil industry in our community, while giving them an opportunity to develop public speaking skills.
All seventh and eighth grade Hinsdale students competed for an opportunity to participate in the speech contest. They had to do extensive research on a topic relating to the oil and gas industry in our region and needed to create a PowerPoint presentation about their topic. Then, every student presented the information in a four to six minute speech to their fellow classmates and to the judge’s panel consisting of three middle school teachers. The students did an outstanding job on this project; however, Rebecca Long, Thomas Jackson, and Daniel Nelligan earned the right to represent the school at the Old Library.
On the night of the contest, these three were true professionals in their behavior, as well as their dress. They performed exceptionally well and were rewarded with dinner after their presentation. Congratulations to Rebecca, Thomas, and Daniel for a job well done.

National Honor Society NewsMembers of area National Honor
Society chapters were honored at a dinner held Wednesday, May 4, at the Knights of Columbus Lodge in Olean. The dinner was sponsored by the school boards of Cat-taraugus County schools. Hinsdale Central School senior Dustin Mendell received the Scholastic Excellence award for HCS. Chelsea Kuhs was also awarded the Distin-guished Service Award for her volunteering. Both students received a framed certificate. Taylor Kent was selected by her peers to re-ceive the award for the Hinsdale student that best exhibits the highest qualities of leader-ship, service and character. She received a plaque sponsored by the Hinsdale American Legion, Ladies’ Auxiliary, Norton Chambers Post 1434. Each of the recipients received monetary recognition as well. Dinner was sponsored by the Allegany-Cattaraugus Superintendents of Schools.
Here are the results from the May 17 Vote . . .
Proposition 1 - Budget Yes - 92 No - 62Proposition 2 - Bus Purchase Yes - 93 No - 61
Matthew Harper (111 votes) was also elected to a five-year term on the Hinsdale Central School Board of Education.
We are pleased to be able to again offer summer school for students entering grades 1-7 in the fall. Due to cuts in fiscal aid from New York, however, we must charge a fee of $30 per student for the four weeks. Pay-ment must be made before July 1, 2011 and checks can be written to “Hinsdale Central School.”
Summer school will be held at HCS on July 5-28 (four weeks). Specific dates will include: July 5-8, 11-14, 18-21, and 25-28. Daily hours of instruction will be 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Combined Groups will be operated for the following grade levels: grade 1, grades 2/3, grades 4/5, and grades 6/7. If enrollment in any grade/group is above 10 students, two teachers will be hired for that group.
Content will include enrichment and project-based fun; there will be motiva-tional activities as well. Remediation will be given in both reading and math when necessary.
District transportation and a mid-morning snack will be provided; or parents can drop students off at 8:20 a.m. and pick them up at 11:30 a.m.
Interested?Summers school is open to interested
Hinsdale resident children entering grades 1-7 in September. Notices will be sent home with students by the middle of June. Or call Mrs. Henton in the Main Office, 557-2227, ext. 400.

6th Grader “Extinguishes” the Competition in Writing Contest
If you see sixth grader Michael Chap-man (above) in the building, please con-gratulate him as he recently won a Fire Prevention and Life Safety Essay Contest. Mrs. Jedrosko’s fifth and sixth grade ELA students entered the competition back in January and recently received the exciting news that Michael was a winner.
The contest was sponsored by the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Fire-men and required students to submit an essay on this year’s theme: Smoke Alarms, Your Sound for Safety. Michael’s essay “ignited” the judges’ interest, and as a result of his impeccable writing skills, Michael won first place at his level. Michael should be very proud of his accomplishment, as the compe-tition was intense, with over 20 schools and 300 essays total being judged.
Michael was presented with a monetary prize of $35 and an award certificate by William Pratt (in absentia). Mr. Pratt is the Chairman of the sponsoring organization’s Fire Prevention Committee.
Michael was thrilled with the win. What a great way for our school district to be working with local volunteer organiza-tions!

Hinsdale Highlights June 2011 6
As another stellar year of academic progress concludes, our Reading Buddy program begins to wind down as well. Mrs. Ed-ward’s first grade class and Mrs. Jedrosko’s fifth grade class have met each month to read to one another, work on projects, and get to know each other. Just as the spring flowers are blossoming, our relationships are blooming as well. Students in
both classes have thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity and have formed a close bond. We have had some amazing experiences and are looking forward to our last couple of sessions together this school year.
Reading Buddies Collaboration Continues to “Bloom”

“Pennies for Leukemia”The Student Council organized a “Pennies for
Leukemia” fund-raiser during the month of March. Classes competed throughout the month to see which class could bring in the most change. The entire school participated and raised a total of $416.65.
Thank you to all who participated. Special con-gratulations to grade 5 for bringing in the most change totaling $182.20. They enjoyed a pizza and ice cream social sponsored by the Student Council (see photo on page 2).
The student council members spent many hours counting pennies, nickels, dimes, quar-ters, and some bills. They all felt that fitting the coins into the tiny little wrappers is much harder than it looks!
The final totals were:Grades PreK-4 $134.00Grades 5-8 $229.49Grades 9-12 $53.16
