Introduction

“A-wings? X-wings? Phew!! A true pilotdo not need such fancy contraptions tostrike a blow against the Empire.” -- General Salm, Defender Wing

The Y-wing is an older design, pre-dating the X-wing and TIE/ln by severalyears. In the early days of the Rebellionwas it the major fighter type in use andsubsequently participated in numerousbattles.

The Y-wing´s main benefits are itsversatility and durability in combat. However, it became increasingly morevulnerable against the faster and moremaneuverable TIE fighter models that wereintroduced as the years went by.

With the introduction of newer rebel star-fighters such as the X-wing, was the Y-wing transferred from pure fightermissions into fighter-bomber missions, were it attacked enemy starships or groundinstallations in-stead of starfighters.

Many were also transferred from regularfleet use to local sector commands werethey became the main striking weaponagainst the Empire. With the introductionof the New Republic, it served in localdefense and sector patrols as well astraining new fighter pilots.

Several independent systems also boughtlarge numbers of this fighter for theirstarfighter forces and the Y-wing has evenserved with the Imperial Star Fleet, although primary in the aggressor role fortraining TIE pilots and ship gunnersagainst rebel tactics.

Its versatility coupled with the many star-fighter factories geared towards buildingY-wings plus the ease of production andavailability of parts, made the Y-wing oneof the longest produced starfighters ever.In fact, the last Y-wing rolled off the

production line roughly two year after thedefeat of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Capsule: This was Koensayr's first attemptto make a hyperspace capable starfighter. Itwas only a partial success. The main faultwas in making a starfighter with mediocreperformance. Nevertheless was this theonly modern hyperspace-capable fighteravailable to the Alliance in the beginning.

The BTL-F1 has a slightly smaller cockpitthan other Y-Wing variants and has apower booster generator placed rightbehind the pilot instead of a gunner.

When the higher performing X-wing cameinto service, many BTL-F1's whereconverted into BTL-T2 Trainers. However, the increased demand for starfighters afterthe Battle of Yavin meant that plenty of theBTL-F1 variant continued in active duty asfighters, although most of them served inlow-threat areas.

Capsule: The BTL-T2 variant of the Y-wing series is a dedicated trainer version. Itis basically a standard BTL-F1 withidentical controls for the pilot-in-trainingin front and his instructor in the rear. Thesecond crew station was made possible byincreasing the size of the cabin andremoving the power booster generator. Thepenalty for this was slightly reducedperformance.

Some were newly built to this standard butthe majority was converted from F1's, afterthey were replaced by the X-wing as thestandard Alliance fighter. Most of theconversions took place after the Battle ofYavin to cope with the increased numberof volunteer pilot trainee's.

Capsule: The Rebel Alliance Intelligencehas found new uses for the T2 Trainer

version and has rebuilt several to serve aslong-range couriers. This means strippingthe rear cockpit of all controls to makeroom for an extra 40-kg of cargo, and thefitting of a special canopy to make itpossible to jump while in flight withoutendangering the pilot.

This variant, in-officially known as BTL-I2, also includes a custom-built power packmade to fit instead of the proton torpedolauncher and its magazine, which increasesthe craft's endurance to 2 weeks. The Intelversion also features the same navcomputer as in the A4 and is thereforecapable of unlimited jumps, however, thenav computer is placed in an extension ofthe main cockpit towards the droid and istherefore more susceptible to damagecompared to the A4.

Capsule: To extend the sensor coverage ofthe fleet, a special variant of the easilymodified Y-wing was used. Under ProjectCadillac I, the prototype BTL-T2 Trainerwas rebuilt to house a sensor array on the

back of the main body. To compensate forthe increased power demand the protontorpedo launchers were removed andpower generators added instead. Thesensor equipment was crude and bulky, and the fighter lacked the onboardcomputing power to shift rapidly throughthe vast amount of data. Thus, sensor datahad to be transmitted back to the carrierwhere the sensor information wascompiled into sensible information.

The additional equipment reduced theperformance of the already mediocre Y-wing to the point where pilots referred tothese as "eggs waiting to be cracked". Still, they fulfilled a vital role until replaced byE-1 Tracers and other better suited vessels.

Many of the carrier fighter wings had atleast one flight of these, and some of thesquadrons aboard escort frigates alsoreplaced part of their normal fightercomplement with a couple of T2W´s.

Several where still in service at the time ofthe Battle of Endor, but most were phasedout of service soon after or relegated tosecond-line duty.

Capsule: The T2KC is dedicated tankerversion, especially designed to refuelfellow starfighters in-flight.

It uses the basic hull configuration of theT2W, but replaces the sensor array withinthe bulbous housing on top of the craftwith extra fuel cells, and has a rear-mounted boom to transfer fuel to another

starfighter equipped with an in-flightrefueling receptacle

Several of the starfighter wings equippedwith Y-wings have a special tanker flightin order to increase combat endurance andprolong reconnaissance patrols.

Capsule: The A4 variant of the Y-Wing isalso known as the "Longprobe". It ismodified for deep-space missions withlonger in-flight time. The A4 has weakershields due to increased power drain fromits stronger hyperdrive. Instead it has areinforced hull.

The biggest difference between the S3 andthe A4 models is the omission of thegunner. That space is taken up by a navcomputer and hyperdrive back-up. The A4pilot must fix his ion cannon in oneposition (usually directed forward), andcannot make use of the turret's rotationalcapabilities.

Capsule: The first Y-Wings modified forsuppression of enemy air defenses whereBTL-S3s which became known as BTL-E5s.

One of the few external signs ofconversion was the presence of severalantennas on the fuselage, but otherwisethey retained the external configuration ofthe S3 variant. The main difference is thespecial in-built computer and sensingarrays, which helps to pinpoint threats andis considered vital to its mission profile. However, it can also carry speciallyadapted equipment on the wing pylons andin the semi-recessed missile housings.

The E5 variant of the Y-Wing is alsoknown as the "Wild Weasel", since itscurries all over a combat scene, irritating

It lacks sufficient internal volume to housemore advanced systems and control boxesand was therefore only produced by thefield-conversion of some redundant S3suntil the advent of the specially designedBTL-E9.

The E5 was deployed some months beforethe Battle of Yavin.

# The Y-wing mark II

The original Y-wing was a potent craftable to endure and deliver tremendouspunishment, but it was not as fast, maneuverable or heavily armed as modernstarfighters.

To rectify those problems some of the besttechnicians in the Alliance formed aspecial task group specifically dedicated toupgrading the Y-wing.

The main goal to achieve was to increasesurvivability, while maintaining the basicversatility of the original Y-wing design.

By installing more powerful sub-lightengines (made possible by the addition ofan extra ion coil to the R200 Ion JetEngine), did the space speed increase byover 10 percent.

Reconfigured steering plates and diskvectrals enhanced maneuverability, whilethe hull gained more blast resistant outerlayers.

The original sensor array was replaced bythe more powerful one used by the X-wing, which simplified production andincreased the availability of spare parts. The recon variant received an improvedversion of the A4 sensors, while the wild

weasel variant got the most sophisticatedsensor equipment of them all.

To improve its offensive capability, theoriginal Taim & Bak laser cannons wasreplaced by a new, improved version, which substantially increased the damagerating.

The ion cannon was not replaced, since thebasic design was considered to be goodenough.

The proton torpedo launchers were heavilymodified. The magazine capacity wasincreased and steps taken to reduce thetime necessary to reload.

Externally the Y-wing II looks slightlydifferent from the original Y-wing. Thesub-light engines are a bit longer, althoughthe support pylons have been shortened, sothe length of the Y-wing is still 16 meters. In addition, the housing for the protontorpedoes has been elongated in order totake the increased magazine.

The Y-wing II replaced the original Y-wing on the production lines between theBattle of Hoth and the Battle of Endor.

During the early days of the New Republicsome of the older Y-wing´s was upgradedto the new standard, but the majority weresold, scrapped or relegated to planetarydefense roles. Instead, the Y-wing mark IItook over majority of the roles performedby the original Y-wing., while the rest wasperformed by newer starfighter designs.

Capsule: The BTL-U8 variant (U forUtility) is based on rebuilt Y-Wings andhas an enlarged cockpit, which incorporatelimited passenger and crew quarters. Its primary mission was to carry vitalcargoes and passengers quickly through ahigh-threat area.

The U8 variant of the Y-Wing is alsoknown as the "Easy Eight" due to itssmooth ride and high standard compared toa real combat-capable Y-Wing. Because ofthe power drain of its improved hyperdriveengines, the U8 loses some of its deflectorshield strength, though the hull isreinforced to compensate.

The nose-mounted laser cannons and theproton torpedo launchers are removed. Inaddition the four semi-recessed missilehousings under the belly are plated over. This gives room for more fuel and cargoand a nav computer and hyperdrive back-up.

By using retired, high-hour Y-Wings,notably A4's, and rebuilding them into fastcouriers was it possible to release shuttlesand light freighters for other vital duties.

The first of this variant was put intoservice about one year after the Battle ofYavin.

Capsule: The BTL-E9 is based on the S7variant and its primary mission is to escortother starfighters on strike missions, andmake it easier for them to survive byjamming enemy sensors and com gear.Another important function is its capabilityto target the enemy's fire control by usingHARM missiles.

The E9 has a special in-built computer andsensing array, which helps to pinpointthreats and is considered vital to itsmission profile.

It has a permanently attached belly capsulewhich contain jamming equipment andcarries other mission-variable equipmenton the wing pylons and in the semi-recessed missile housings. This equipmentreduces the maneuverability plus the speedwhen traveling in atmosphere. Anotherdrawback is that the E9's jammer shineslike a beacon on a capital ship screens.

This variant was issued to front-linesquadrons about one year after the Battleof Yavin.

Weapons usually carried by Wild Weaselsinclude:

1. Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARM)

These were original meant for suppressionof enemy sensor systems, they quicklybecame a self-defense weapon as IR andIntercept missiles were adapted for groundlaunching against starfighters and landingcraft. As the anti-starfighter business wentover almost entirely to energy weapons,ARMs dropped in popularity. Now, theyare used primarily to force enemy ships toshut off their sensors at the beginning of araid. They are effective, in that the bestuse a sub-nuclear explosive that isdesigned to minimize fallout and blast, much like a proton torpedo, but tomaximize the electromagnetic pulse, killing electronics.

Skill: Starship Gunnery: ARM MissilesFire Control: ARM's uses the search modeon the ship sensors for initial targeting butrelies on its own sensor for terminalhoming. Its specialized tracking devicegives +2D to fire control when usedagainst any type of active sensor.

2. Targeting James

Originally meant for courier and reconships, these were adopted by squadronsthat took on defense suppression missionsfor survivability reasons during the CloneWars. In more recent conflicts, they havebeen used to protect stick craft from otherfighters during raids. The A-Wing serieshas had one of these mounted internally.

Skill: SensorsFire Control: 0D, works against all enemycraft in range, all fire arcs.

Capsule: This is the special trainer versionof the Y-Wing II series, and features aforward-looking seat for a second pilot, who normally is the instructor. In order toimprove visibility was the ion cannonturret removed and the cockpit slightlyenlarged.

Apart from being used as an operationaltrainer, it is also in use as a forwardobserver. In this type of mission it carriesspecial target designator pods andtransmits its signals back to capital ships orother starfighter squadrons.

This variant was put into service some timebefore the Battle of Endor and is one of thestandard trainers in use by the NewRepublic.

Capsule: The New Republic found itselfwith large numbers of old, time-expired Y-Wings a couple of years after the Battle ofEndor, and therefore initiated a program ofconverting some of them into target dronesfor live target practice.

Usable parts such as weapons wereremoved and a remote control system wasinstalled. The D11 can either be pilotednormally (for ferry missions) or flown byan astromech droid or controlled byground-station data-link.

Apart from being used for target practiceand live weapons test, the Y-wing Dronehas also seen use as an improvised missile.

In the latter case, every available spacewithin the fighter was packed with highexplosives and the generators wired foroverload. The Drone was then piloted byeither an on-board astromech droidprogrammed for suicide missions orremotely guided by a pilot on another ship.Known instances were this modificationwas used is for example during the Battleof Calamari, when every available resourcewas used to combat the attacking WorldDevastators.

Game Terms: When used as animprovised missile, the Y-wing Drone hasa damage rating of 10D, capital-scale.

It will explode if damaged more thanlightly.
