OPENING ACCLAMATION (BCP p. 355)

The people standing, the Celebrant says

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever.

Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no

secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your

Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy

Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant Lord, have mercy.

People Christ, have mercy.

Celebrant Lord, have mercy

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more

than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things

of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask,

except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and

the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lessons

FIRST READING: Exodus 20:1-20 (ICB)

The people sit.

A Reading from the book of Exodus.

1Then God spoke all these words:

2 “I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of the land of Egypt where you were slaves.

3 “You must not have any other gods except me.

4 “You must not make for yourselves any idols. Don’t make something that looks like anything in the

sky above or on the earth below or in the water below the land. 5 You must not worship or serve any

idol. This is because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. A person may sin against me and hate

me. I will punish his children, even his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 6 But I will be very kind

to thousands who love me and obey my commands.

7 “You must not use the name of the Lord your God thoughtlessly. The Lord will punish anyone who is

guilty and misuses his name.

8 “Remember to keep the Sabbath as a holy day. 9 You may work and get everything done during six

days each week. 10 But the seventh day is a day of rest to honor the Lord your God. On that day no one

may do any work: not you, your son or daughter, or your men or women slaves. Neither your animals

nor the foreigners living in your cities may work. 11 The reason is that in six days the Lord made

everything. He made the sky, earth, sea and everything in them. And on the seventh day, he rested. So

the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 “Honor your father and your mother. Then you will live a long time in the land. The Lord your God

is going to give you this land.

13 “You must not murder anyone.

14 “You must not be guilty of adultery.

15 “You must not steal.

16 “You must not tell lies about your neighbor in court.

17 “You must not want to take your neighbor’s house. You must not want his wife or his men or women

slaves. You must not want his ox or his donkey. You must not want to take anything that belongs to

your neighbor.”

18 The people heard the thunder and the trumpet. They saw the lightning on the mountain and smoke

rising from the mountain. They shook with fear and stood far away from the mountain. 19 Then they

said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself. Then we will listen. But don’t let God speak to us, or we will

die.”

20 Then Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. God has come to test you. He wants you to respect

him so you will not sin.”

PSALM: Psalm 19

1The heavens declare the glory of God, *

and the firmament shows his handiwork.

2One day tells its tale to another, *

and one night imparts knowledge to another.

3Although they have no words or language, *

and their voices are not heard,

4Their sound has gone out into all lands, *

and their message to the ends of the world.

5In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; *

it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber;

it rejoices like a champion to run its course.

6It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens

and runs about to the end of it again; *

nothing is hidden from its burning heat.

Page 4: The Word of God · idol. This is because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. A person may sin against me and hate me. I will punish his children, even his grandchildren and great-grandchildren

4

7The law of the LORD is perfect and revives the soul; *

the testimony of the LORD is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent.

8The statutes of the LORD are just and rejoice the heart; *

the commandment of the LORD is clear and gives light to the eyes.

9The fear of the LORD is clean and endures for ever; *

the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

10More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, *

sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb.

11By them also is your servant enlightened, *

and in keeping them there is great reward.

12Who can tell how often he offends? *

cleanse me from my secret faults.

13Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins;

let them not get dominion over me; *

then shall I be whole and sound,

and innocent of a great offense.

14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, *

O LORD, my strength and my redeemer.

SECOND READING: Philippians 3:4b-14 (ICB)

A Reading from Paul's letter to the Church in Philippi.

4 If anyone thinks that he has a reason to trust in himself, he should know that I have greater reason for

trusting in myself. 5 I was circumcised eight days after my birth. I am from the people of Israel and the

tribe of Benjamin. I am a Hebrews, and my parents were Hebrews. The law of Moses was very

important to me. That is why I became a Pharisee. 6 I was so enthusiastic that I tried to hurt the church.

No one could find fault with the way I obeyed the law of Moses. 7 At one time all these things were

important to me. But now I think those things are worth nothing because of Christ. 8 Not only those

things, but I think that all things are worth nothing compared with the greatness of knowing Christ

Jesus my Lord. Because of Christ, I have lost all those things. And now I know that all those things are

worthless trash. This allows me to have Christ 9 and to belong to him. Now that I belong to Christ, I am

right with God and this being right does not come from my following the law. It comes from God

through faith. God uses my faith in Christ to make me right with him. 10 All I want is to know Christ

and the power of his rising from death. I want to share in Christ’s sufferings and become like him in

his death. 11 If I have those things, then I have hope that I myself will be raised from death.

12 I do not mean that I am already as God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal. But I

continue trying to reach it and to make it mine. Christ wants me to do that. That is the reason Christ

made me his. 13 Brothers, I know that I have not yet reached that goal. But there is one thing I always

do: I forget the things that are past. I try as hard as I can to reach the goal that is before me. 14 I keep

trying to reach the goal and get the prize. That prize is mine because God called me through Christ to

the life above.

SEQUENCE HYMN Help US, O Lord, to learn (628)

All stand.

GOSPEL: Matthew 21:33-46 (ICB)

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

33 “Listen to this story: There was a man who owned a vineyard. He put a wall around the vineyard

and dug a hole for a winepress. Then he built a tower. He leased the land to some farmers and left for a

trip. 34 Later, it was time for the grapes to be picked. So the man sent his servants to the farmers to get

his share of the grapes. 35 But the farmers grabbed the servants, beat one, killed another, and then killed

a third servant with stones. 36 So the man sent some other servants to the farmers. He sent more

servants than he sent the first time. But the farmers did the same thing to the servants that they had

done before. 37 So the man decided to send his son to the farmers. He said, ‘The farmers will respect

my son.’ 38 But when the farmers saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the owner’s son. This

vineyard will be his. If we kill him, then his vineyard will be ours!’ 39 So the farmers grabbed the son,

threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 So what will the owner of the vineyard do to these

farmers when he comes?”

41 The priests and leaders said, “He will surely kill those evil men. Then he will lease the vineyard to

some other farmers. They will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Surely you have read this in the Scriptures:

‘The stone that the builders did not want

became the cornerstone.

Page 6: The Word of God · idol. This is because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. A person may sin against me and hate me. I will punish his children, even his grandchildren and great-grandchildren

6

The Lord did this,

and it is wonderful to us.’

43 “So I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you. It will be given to people who

do the things God wants in his kingdom. 44 The person who falls on this stone will be broken. But if the

stone falls on him, he will be crushed.”

45 The leading priests and the Pharisees heard these stories that Jesus told. They knew he was talking

about them. 46 They wanted to arrest him. But they were afraid of the people, because the people

believed that Jesus was a prophet.

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON Mtr. Suz Cate

THE CREED (BCP p. 358)

All stand.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

Page 7: The Word of God · idol. This is because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. A person may sin against me and hate me. I will punish his children, even his grandchildren and great-grandchildren

7

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

For the President and all who are in authority.

For health care workers and all first responders.

For hospice care workers.

For all students, faculty and staff of schools and universities.

Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for the Church: that believers throughout the world may preach the kingdom of God, not as

our private possession, but as a gift for which the Lord will one day demand an account. Lord, in your

mercy: Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for the world: that all peoples may learn to live in the light of the law of the Lord, finding it

a source of refreshment, joy, and justice. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

vigilant in their duties and their hearts may be converted toward working for justice and the common

good. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

be visited by the peace of God which surpasses all understanding and be restored to wholeness. Lord,

and for Maggie’s baptism. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for those who celebrate birthdays this week, especially Brett Murphy, John Wilson, Sylvia

Linvill, Tenley Murphy, and Caroline Werntz. Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days

increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand;

comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may

your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives.

Let us pray for those who approach death and those who have died especially Gary Knivila, that they

may ever proclaim that to live is Christ and to die is gain. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

The Officiant adds this concluding prayer:

God our Father, bless all children. Keep them in your tender care. May they know you, love you, and

serve you, all your children everywhere. Amen.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,
