The Treasures of Great Britain

There is something about the British Isles. Without question, it is one of the world’s most interesting

destinations combining spectacular natural beauty with rich and fascinating history… our history. So much

of who we are as a nation has its roots in what happened there. So many of us trace our roots, in some form,

to people who came from there. A trip to Great Britain is not just another trip. In many ways, it’s a

pilgrimage because it teaches us more about who we are.

The destinations are thrilling: We’ll enjoy the pageantry of London, the Roman history and stunning beauty

of Bath, the unrivaled charm of the Cotswolds, the breathtaking Lakes District, the glens and highlands of

Scotland and SO MUCH MORE. We’ll enjoy many of the places you’ve heard about and some you had no

idea existed. And we’ll do it in style with our private touring coach, 21 delicious meals included and clean,

comfortable hotels at the end of each day.

But that’s only part of the story. On this tour, we will focus much of our attention on the LDS history in the

British Isles. Did you know that nearly 90% of those who crossed the plains from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City

were from the British Isles? The missionary labors of Wilford Woodruff, Heber C. Kimball, Brigham Young

and many others bore miraculous fruit, with thousands joining the church. Without their success, the church

would not have survived. It is inspiring to retrace their steps – steps that were taken in some of Britain’s

most picturesque areas like Herefordshire, Lancashire and Edinburgh. It is a tour like no other.

Webb Tours has directed many trips to England. We have designed a custom itinerary for those who want to

see the highlights and wonders of Great Britain WHILE also focusing on the LDS history that unfolded

there. The tour will be directed by Karen Lesser who lived for three years in England and is an expert in

LDS history there. She has directed many dozens of church history tours including several to England. You

will love her knowledge, personality and inspirational teaching. This is a trip of a lifetime… We hope you

can join us.

Daily Itinerary:

July 28: Today we fly via the east coast to London, England, arriving the morning of August 26:

July 29: Welcome to England! It’s a great time to be here. Much of the summer traffic is dying down.

Crowds are smaller and temperatures are pleasant. Upon arrival, we’ll transfer to our hotel for a brief rest

(rooms may not be immediately available). This afternoon, we’ll provide an orientation tour and begin

seeing the sites of London. We’ll take a stroll in Hyde Park area (and visit the important Speaker’s Corner

and the historic Hyde Park Chapel), browse briefly at famous Harrods, and spend a couple of hours in the

British Museum, one of the world’s great museums (if you prefer, you can visit the National Gallery of Art). We return to the hotel to enjoy a relaxing dinner together and a chance to retire early. D

July 30: Today we’ll be joined by a local guide who will show us more of London. We’ll see Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and more. We’ll drive by Tower Bridge, Tower of London and famous St. Paul’s Cathedral. You’ll see Trafalgar Square, Picadilly Circus and

many of the stunning monuments. Those interested can take a one hour cruise on the River Thames (not

included). In the afternoon, we’ll travel to the suburbs and enjoy a session in the London Temple

(optional). If you have been to the temple (or choose not to visit), we can arrange for you to see a Broadway

Show this evening (not included). B

July 31: Today we work our way to the west as we begin our circle around the island. England is a

relatively small country. It is only 700 miles from the tip of Scotland to the south of England. Travel time is

Page 3: The WONDERS of ENGLAND & SCOTLAND - Webb Tours Isles Brochure.pdf · Cotswold Villages in Central England The WONDERS of ENGLAND & SCOTLAND JuJJuuJulyllyyly 22228888----AugustAugustAugust

enjoyable because the scenery is always pleasant. Our first stop today is a road-side view of mysterious

Stonehenge – massive stones place in a curious pattern – but for what purpose? We’ll then drive a short

distance into Salisbury where you’ll have a brief orientation tour followed by a visit to their most impressive

cathedral. It may be the most beautiful in all of England (you have to trust us on this one). Our hotel tonight

is in the Cotswold village of Gloucester. Dinner is included. B, D

August 1: Welcome to the fabled Cotswold Hills of central England. Many of these villages look today as

they did several centuries ago with their famous Cotswold stoned houses and buildings. The setting is

peaceful and this makes a great home base from which to explore the surrounding area for the next couple of

days. Today our excursion takes us a short distance to Bath, one of England’s five star attractions. This was

the northern most portion of the Roman Empire. Entrance to the famous Roman Baths (where Julius Cesar

often came to relax) is included. This is a chance to see 2,000 year old Roman history in a setting that is

uniquely England. It is a protected UNESCO site and one you’ll never forget. You’ll have some free time

for shopping before we return to our hotel where we will enjoy dinner as a group. B, D

August 2: Today we turn our attention to LDS history. We are just an hour away from beautiful Hereford

which is the main town in the lovely area known as Herefordshire. Upon arrival here, Wilford Woodruff

climbed to the top of beautiful Hereford Beacon and called the scene a “grand survey of the works of nature

and the power of God”. The natural beauty of the area cannot be overstated with green, rolling hills as far as

the eye can see. We’ll first visit the Benbow Farm where the first baptisms in this area occurred. The

church has purchased a right away to the pond that is still there today. We’ll have an inspiring devotional as

we enjoy the setting. We’ll then drive over to the Gadfield Elm Chapel, the oldest continuously standing

chapel in the world. The original structure where Brigham Young, Wilford Woodruff and Willard Richards

met in 1840 is still standing. It became the meeting place for the growing church. Missionaries are there

today to share the inspiring history. We return to nearby Gloucester for the evening. B

August 3: Today we’ll visit some of the famous Cotswold villages. Most tour groups just drive through the

Cotswolds on their way to the north. That’s a shame. These are some of England’s greatest treasures. We’ll

make brief stops in a couple of the villages like Broadway, Stow on the Wold, Bibury, Chippen Camden or Bourton on the Water. This is England as you pictured it. We’ll exit the Cotswold area near the town

of Stratford upon Avon and have a chance to take pictures of Shakespeare’s birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s charming thatch-roofed cottage. In the late afternoon, we’ve included admission to Warwick Castle, England’s finest medieval fortress on the banks of the Avon River in a lovely natural setting. We

stay in the town of Wrexham tonight. B, D

August 4: There is so much to enjoy in this part of England. This morning we’ll drive over to the famous

walled city of Chester which has witnessed much of England’s history. Take a stroll along the wall, see the

famous “Rows”, and enjoy some really fun browsing. Chester is one of the best preserved medieval towns

in England (similar to Rothenburg in Germany). From there, it’s a short drive over to Liverpool where we’ll

enjoy a visit to the Albert Docks. From here, thousands of saints boarded ships for their journey to

America. A visit to the Merseyside Maritime Museum is included where there are large exhibits about the

migrations of these pioneers. Our hotel is in nearby Preston. B

August 5: This morning we will visit the beautiful Preston Temple. Those interested may attend a session.

This is where the church had its beginnings in England. When Heber C. Kimball and others arrived in

Liverpool, they made their way to Preston. In the town square was a banner that read “Truth will Prevail”.

The temple now stands as a monument to their faith and efforts. After the session and lunch (in the

cafeteria), we’ll visit other sites like the River Ribble where the first baptisms took place. If time permits,

we’ll drive out to Downham a picturesque village where the entire town joined the church (including your

tour director’s ancestors). We’ll share the touching history. We stay in Preston again tonight. B, L

August 6: Today is a chance to see another five star attraction: The Lakes District of England which is

nestled between Lancashire and the Scottish border. We’ll enjoy a cruise on beautiful Lake Windermere

while admiring the green hills and mountain setting. The bus will meet us and take us to the village of

Grasmere which is oozing with charm. You’ll have time for lunch and browsing. You’ll have free time in

the afternoon to do as you wish. We’ll stay north of the Lakes District tonight. B, D

August 7: Today we enter into Scotland. If time permits, we’ll make a picture stop at Hadrian’s Wall built

almost 2,000 years ago as the northern most border of the massive Roman Empire. Most of the day will be

spent exploring the beautiful Lakes District of southern Scotland. You’ll love the green valleys (or glens)

with more sheep than people. We’ll visit the town of Sterling and learn the history of William Wallace of

Braveheart fame. You’ll have the option to scale his impressive monument. After a picture stop at Sterling Castle, we’ll continue into Falkirk where we’ll stay at the impressive Airth Castle. This once imposing

fortress is now a comfortable hotel where we’ll spend two nights. B, D

August 8: We are about 30 miles from fabulous Edinburgh where we will spend the day. Edinburgh is a

sophisticated city with much to offer. We’ll see the famous “Old Town” and the modern “New Town”.

We’ll see Carlton Hill, St. Giles Cathedral and more. We’ll view “Arthur’s Seat” from where Orson Hyde

dedicated the country of Scotland for the preaching of the gospel. Entrance is included today to visit the

famous Edinburgh Castle which is perched on the hilltop overlooking the city. From the top you’ll enjoy

stunning views of the city and surrounding countryside. On the castle tour, you’ll learn much of Scotland’s

history, see the Crown Jewels and more. After visiting the castle, you’ll enjoy some free time on the

famous Royal Mile, full of shops and restaurants in a setting that is pure Scotland. We’ll return to our hotel

in Falkirk. B, D

August 9: Today we return to London making our way to fascinating York. We’ll enjoy a relaxing walking

tour of Old York. We’ll see the famous Mansion House, Petergate and Stonegate and, of course, the

Shambles. Entrance is included into colossal York Minster, one of the world’s largest (and most

impressive) cathedrals. B

August 10: Today we make our way back to London. After a short drive, we’ll enjoy an orientation tour of

Coventry, passing the famous Coventry Cathedral. We’ll see the statue of Lady Godiva as well. Before

returning to London, we’ll see beautiful Oxford with a chance for some browsing after seeing some of the

sites. We’ll arrive back in London this evening as we complete our circle of England and Scotland. B, D

August 11: Buffet breakfast followed by our transfer to the airport for flights home. B

Warwick Castle
