THE PRESIDENT’S KEY NOTES

The month of December offers many exciting town activities as the tree lighting and Christmas parade for the first week of December. We all have activities with friends and families. Our duties with the club is to sit down and list the activities that you had done with the club since you joined or since last January. New members if you have been to a meeting or donated to a charity in the club, please write it down on a piece of paper with your name. Any member can go to the website and get a tally sheet from there or contact Julia Yeargan. We will have tally sheets at our social. Everyone turning in a sheet means much to our club and the activities we plan. Our first social will be our meeting at the Garden Hut starting at 5:30 on Dec. 12th. We will socialize and then have our meal at the Garden Hut. The price of the event is $18 per person. Please, join us for the Holiday fun. If you are on a restricted diet, let Pam Booker know. Her home phone is 919 552-8703 or [email protected] Finally, I am so excited about how well the year has been. We have both new and seasoned members sharing and enjoying the club activities. If you missed the November meeting, you missed an inspiring time with International Outreach. Our theme for the next two years is “Reaching for the stars”. January is our Art Festival. In February we will be honoring Francis Ashworth Senter. I hope everyone will share these special events. I see each of us making strides in being a helper, a concerned member, a contributor to club needs and most of all a friend to another member. Thank you for your efforts and for reaching for those stars. I am humbled to help lead such a wonderful group of women. May the star of Bethlehem be bright in your hearts and homes.

Cinderella. December 2 – 18. This musical comedy is a holiday sugarplum for the whole family; just the right mixture of comedy and romance to add the sparkle of magic to your holiday season. A visually stunning musical combining elegant costumes and scenery with song, dance, conniving step-relatives and resourceful fairy-folk.

Home Life – Chair: Barbara Kennedy & Peggy Reynaud

The Home Life Committee just completed Christmas Bags of shampoos/soaps for the Elderly Home. Thank you Martha for your donation of cards and all who signed them for us. Keep those soaps and shampoos coming in. They really appreciate what FVWC does for them. Still need: Men’s products and cleaning supplies for Hero's United. If you have furniture you would like to donate, please call Sara Tew and we will arrange a pick up if needed.

Education – Chair: Dot Mays & Shirley Simmons

Our department sends heartfelt good wishes for member, Pam Booker as she helps husband Kurt with recovery from by-pass surgery. We are delighted that the mother of Vickie Currin, Mrs. Ballard, is progressing toward returning home soon. Finally, Jeanne Ridpath is on the mend just in time for Christmas and the New Year. Education CSP has been hard at work over the fall with Mini Grant Applications and Awards. Vickie Currin and Pam Booker spent their hours working with the co-chairman on these grants during October. We have received a number of thank you notes from winners of these in our 25th Year of this program. Education CSP will be working on scholarship interviews during the holidays and over the period before our January meeting date. Members will be scheduled for only one of these scholarships working with the co-chairmen. Christine Taylor will be helping with HOBY on November 30th. We have one applicant from Harnett Central High for HOBY and she will receive our tuition grant. Lyndsey Nicole Brewer is a sophomore and the daughter of a firefighter at the F. V. Fire Department. From Fuquay-Varina High, we will be interviewing three applicants, with one of them being our choice for the tuition grant. Winning applicants will then complete the forms at the high schools and will be the representative from their respective high schools at HOBY on June 19-21, 2017. On December 15, 2016 we will pick up all applications for the Sallie Southhall Cotton Scholarship and will be scheduling interviews of these applicants during the holidays or in early January. Seniors from FVHS, HCHS, and SWA have forms for making application. These interviews will be jointly held with the GFWC Junior Woman’s Club and two students will be chosen to represent our clubs at the District VI Arts Festival in early February. Julia Yeargan will be working with the co-chairman on these interviews. Only college sophomores who will be “rising juniors” for the Fall of 2016 and already in a School of Education preparing to become a teacher are eligible to

make application for the Gleason-Johnson Teaching Scholarship. To date we have not heard from any potential applicants but should this happen, the Education CSP will be scheduling interviews for this scholarship during the holidays, also. This applicant will then interview at the District VI Arts Festival, too. Julia McCombs and Fran Baggs are on stand-by for this task. Our final interviews for the F. V. Technical Scholarships will not be scheduled until after April 15th.

International Outreach – Chair: Patty Byrne & Sandy Allen

What better way to make Christmas meaningful than with a gift from Heifer International? You can be part of a growing holiday tradition by helping those in need. Instead of material items, choose to honor your friends and loved ones with gifts that help struggling families lift themselves out of hunger and poverty. Consider a flock of chicks for only $20, or maybe a gift of honeybees for $30 or a goat, pig or sheep for $120. The list is long for ways to share your abundance with others. Go to www.heifer.org/gift-catalog/animals-nutrition/index.html.

Please continue to get a flu shot or any other vaccine at Walgreens. Get a shot and Walgreens gives a shot to a child in need of lifesaving vaccines. GFWC has partnered with the Shot@Life program sponsored by the UN Foundation for several years. Thus far, our local club has had 14 members to participate in this year’s project. In addition, special thanks goes to Vickie Cardin for getting 96 people at all 11 offices of FONVILLE MORISEY REALTY and to Kathy Koch for getting 27 people at the F-V American Legion to take part in this program. We are proud of your work!

WOW! WHAT A GREAT CAMPAIGN FOR UNICEF THIS YEAR! Our F-V Woman’s Club raised $710.54 and had 31 members participating. We also provided “Trick or Treat” boxes for the FVHS Juniorettes. Thank you for your awesome support of UNICEF.
