How? Re- search shows that not reading over the summer can cause young minds to lose up to three months of reading achievement. You can be a hero and fight that “summer slide” by getting 20 minutes of reading in per day. Our fearless Summer Reading Club is a great way to do just that, allowing kids to earn prizes simply by read- ing books. It continues through July 25, and anyone 18 & under can sign up at our Youth Services Desk. When the Summer Reading Club draws to a close, there will still be bunches to celebrate during the fina- le party on July 25. Kids of all ages are invited to dress as their favorite superhero and enjoy the finish of all of their heroic summer efforts. But there are still lots of events that will happen before the final party. Our school age crafts, story times, Teen Tuesdays, and Family Fun Nights will all be happening each week until the finale. There are plenty of local heroes to talk about this summer, as well. Each year, the Warren G. Harding Symposium (a collaboration of The Ohio State University at Marion, Marion Technical College, the Harding Home and Memorial, and the Marion Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau) presents in-depth analysis on a single topic or event in the Harding Era, or related areas of interest. This summer, the library is offering programs to coincide with this event, that will focus on Ohio’s First Ladies. From the glitz and glamor the First Ladies have portrayed, to some of the traditions that they have contin- ued or created, our summer events will examine some of the ways that these women have influenced society. There will also be a Community Read that will tie into this theme as well, with a casual discussion on the title “Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule” by Jennifer Chiaverini. In this his- torical fiction novel about the deep and often complex friendship be- tween Julia Grant, wife of Ulysses S. Grant, and her servant, Jule, the turbulent changes of the time are highlighted and provide lots to talk about. Heroes! History! Glitz! Glamor! Ex- citement! And it’s all happening this month at your Library. Read on to see when your events will be taking place. You may have noticed a dif- ferent format for this month’s edition of The Wire. This is just a part of the Library’s focus on improving and up- dating all that we do, in order to serve our community to the best of our abilities. We hope you’ll enjoy a more vibrant newsletter, with a focus on what’s new in the literary world, as well as hearing from our staff about current library happenings and prob- ably most importantly: what we’re reading now! We are incredibly passionate about books, and we are al- ways looking for more ways to share this with our pa- trons. We are also extremely interested in hearing from you about how we’re doing. If you have anything library- related you’d like included in this publication (or any input about our other services), please do not hesitate to let us know. Read! | Learn! | Enjoy!
