Mr Goya was trained by Mr. Naka to carry on his principles o bonsai in Caliornia. Frank resides in West LA and teamong many other places at Yamaguchis Nursery. Te nursery is still run by the amily even though Mister Yamaguchxcellent bonsai artist, has passed on.

Mr. Goya brought his assistant o 1 year Jaime and Jaimes amily came along. Mr. Goya said he liked saikei because it ery ast demonstration. No time or boredom watching a demonstrator wire. However the trees were already prepareired and trimmed. Te earth secured in a Gardena Nursery was ready as was the muck necessary to stabilize the ro

nd plants. Te Muck was made rom muddy clay and peat moss. All this took time beorehand. Te slab was preparede trees placed. Moss was applied and small groundcover and grasses planted.

Te saikei was admired and then raed. He brought a second saikei or the auction in August. Tanks to Yoko.

What makes his saikei so outstanding? Like most bonsai it is aeveloped taste. But one likes what he sees right away. Tere iswow actor. For me the trees were prepared so that the oliage

was tight and as small as possible. Te tree styles were slanting

nd the branch distribution ollowed Mr. Nakas recommenda-ons to create a spiral rom the straighter branches on the lean-

ng side to the down pointing branches on the other. Te compo-tion was sophisticated and precise.

Your main concern this time o year shouldbe to careully tend your trees during the heat.

Rotate them everyweek or two. Hot pots can cook rootsso protect the pot by covering it withsphagnum moss or burlap or placea board over the surace o the pot toshade the soil and the side toward thesun. Set trees on the damp groundin the shade. Put up shade cloth onan overhead rame. Water overheadin the morning so as to dampen thebenches and surrounding ground. Tehigher humidity is good or the treesexcept or pines. Something I have

learned rom the scientic literatureon needle cast disease in pines is thathigh humidity promotes it so I spraymy pines inrequently. Junipers and deciduoustrees all seem to like a good wash o though.Fertilize everything. Remember re-quent dilute ertilizing is better than in-requent heavy applications. reescan be deoliated this month but notlater. Remember to remove all leavesand set the tree in a shady place ora couple o weeks until the newleaves are just beginning to pop. You

should cut down on the water alsobecause without leaves there is little

transpiration and the soil will remaintoo wet. Flowering trees should haveany remaining buds removed and mosto the ruit. Leave a ew or all enjoy-ment but dont leave all the ruit onone branch. I you le ruit on the treelast year it might be a good idea tostrip it all o this year. Fruits are verytaxing to the tree.Dont transplant this month. Excep-tions are pomegranates, olives, bougain-

villeas, willow, and tamaris. Shapingo trees can go on as or June but you should

have already done your candle pruning onpines. Air and groundlayering can be donethis month. Check or insect pests. Woolyaphids might show up in any apple relative.Spider mites are always a potential prob-lem in junipers. Mealy bugs are al-ways a problem at our house. Spraywith a combination o malathion andVolk oil or malathion and Ultrane. Becareul to mix the spray according todirections or weaker. It is possible toburn trees with too strong an oil mix-ture. Dont spray anything in the sun.

Wait till sunset or move the tree into shade.

    Rereshments Josh,

Mr. Mel Ikeda visited the Sepulveda Garden Center on an excellent June Sunday or our yearly show. His tree was a simple curved San Jose juniper that he had recently ound in a nursery. He had wiredthe branches beore coming so as to make the demo move along nicely.Mr. Ikeda has been in training rst with his ather Mr. Masayuki Ikeda who owned a bonsai nursery.Tis gave him the unique experience o growing up around Harry Hirao, Khan Komai and JohnNaka. He presently gives lessons in Gardena with Leila Kusumi.

He stresses taper in the trunk, the branches and the roots as a base or aesthetic design. He preerscutting o a larger non-tapering branch or jinning it and awaiting a more slender shoot o thebranch to mature so taper is created. Tis is the ability to see the tree in the uture. He believes thatit is difcult to live with a branch or trunk that does not taper and will always be an eyesore. Hestressed that the branches diameter and length must be in concordance with the size o the trunk soas not to diminish the trunk visually.Te branches were set up beautiully with an apex to the branch and oliage going out to a point. Hewanted the trunk exposed as much as possible to see the taper. Mr. Ikeda repotted the tree removingabout hal the root ball. He ound an area just under the trunk that was not allowing water in andloosened and replaced the soil.Te bonsai will be auctioned in August at the BBQ. Mr. Ikedas competence and generosity weremuch appreciated as he took time to look over the trees in the show or suggestions on improve-ment. Tanks to yoko or arranging the demo.
