Ingathering Sunday October 30

By now, everyone should have received their pledging inform-ation, either having picked it up after service on October 16 or received it in the mail. Contained in the packet is information regarding Trinity’s bud-get and how your annual gifts are used to support the vital ministries of our church. Our goals for this year’s appeal are to grow beyond 300 pledges and to achieve a 5% increase in our financial strength. Please return your completed pledge card as soon as possible. Please note that a Stewardship pledge is an annual financial commitment and an essential part of membership at Trinity. A commitment to the Building for Ministry campaign is a gift for the new Parish House Facility. Please give prayerful consideration to generous support of both.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

By the time you read this, we will have celebrated two annual events that are part of who we are as a community.

I highlight these two because they align with our stewardship appeal to “Expand our Circle.” Both of these events are vehicles for reaching out beyond Trinity to those who seek connections and who need sustenance.

Blessing of the Animals consistent ly brings people to our doorstep who love animals, but who are not affiliated with Trinity. It is a wonderful occasion for conversation and hospit-ality, and usually raises a small offering that we send to the Buddy Dog Humane Society.

Trinity Fayre nurtures connections within our parish and reaches out beyond it. Not only do we invite people in from the wider community to enjoy a time of fellowship and friendly commerce, but the great majority of the proceeds raised go back out to those in need beyond our immediate circle—to organizations and people as close as Concord and Boston, and as far as South Dakota.

Thank you for your participation in the life of our Parish, which in the name of Christ serves those near and far.

Faithfully yours, Nick

Gone…but not forgotten It was with great shock and sadness that we learned of the recent death of Wini Ferguson.

Many of us who were touched by her exuberance of life have felt a real sense of loss. At times like this we would do well to turn to our faith, and to one another, for consolation. We need to remember that a loving, supportive God is with us in our suffering. And as God’s love holds us in our brokenness, we are to hold one another. We can’t protect each other from the sorrow of grief, but through our caring, prayer, and presence, we can reach out to each other in our pain, and allow God’s love to enter. We can feel held by God as we are held by others, and it is through this spiritual connection as we struggle and suffer that we get through difficult times.

There are lessons to be learned, too, that a sudden death like Wini’s can teach us. Life is uncertain; tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old, and so we should make the most of each day. Don’t put off what you can do today. And if you love someone, tell them, as we never know when we might not have an opportunity to do so again.

Service of Remembrance Sunday, November 13 at 5:00 PM All are invited to join us for a special candlelight service in the chapel. This will be a time for us to come together to remember those who have died and to find consolation for ourselves. There will be a reception in the parish hall afterwards where we can share fellowship with others who have lost a loved one. We hope you will join us. If you would like a ride to the service, please call Anne Lynch in the office at 978-369-3715 and we’ll be happy to provide one for you.

November 13 (Witness): Houses of Healing

Robin Casarjian is the Founder and Director of the Lionheart

Foundation and its National Emotional Literacy Projects. She is a

public speaker, writer, and consultant with extensive experience

in education, stress management training, psychotherapy, and

administration. Whether in inner-city classrooms, hospitals, cor-

porations or prisons, Robin’s work has been widely acclaimed

for its clarity, directness, and unwavering vision of the enormous

potential within all people. Volunteering in a Massachusetts state

prison in 1988, Robin developed a course for inmates in emotion-

al literacy skill-building. Witnessing the profound impact this

course repeatedly had on prisoners, she was inspired to bring her

work to prisoners across the country. Toward this end, Robin

wrote Houses of Healing: A Prisoner’s Guide to Inner Power and

Freedom, with the intent of distributing free copies to all prison

libraries in the U.S.

November 20 (Witness): Healing the Wounded Warrior

Dr. Charles Drebing discusses the roles of faith and faith

communities in the healing of veterans. As soldiers are returning

from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, some face challenging

readjustments back to civilian life. The role of faith and faith

communities in helping these young men and women recover

from the effects of war can offer all of us important lessons about

healing. Charles Drebing received his PhD in Clinical Psychology

and a MA in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. He is

the Acting Mental Health Service Line Manager at the Bedford

VA Medical Center and is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at

the Boston University School of Medicine.

November 27 (Worship): The Gospel of Mark

The calendar year begins on January 1, the academic year begins

on Labor Day, the baseball year begins the first week of April,

and the church year begins the first Sunday of Advent, which

falls on November 27 this year. The start of the new church year

also marks the transition from one lectionary cycle (A, B or C) to

the next, with each cycle focusing on one of the three synoptic

gospels. With the start of Year B this year, we begin the Gospel of

Mark. Please join the Rev. Nick Morris-Kliment for this forum

reflection on the Gospel of Mark and what makes it special and

different from the other Gospels.

Prelude Recital & Choral Evensong All Saint’s Sunday, November 6 at 5 PM On Sunday, October 16, we dedicated to the glory of God a new Portative Organ, paid for by an anonymous donor, and designed to accompany instruments and voices and be movable. I will present this new instrument in a half-hour prelude recital including music by composers from Italy, France, and the US, representing five centuries. After the recital, our Parish Choir will sing the Anglican Service of Choral Evensong with musical settings by John Goss, Philip Radcliff, William Byrd, and others.

Advent Choral Evensong Sunday, December 4 at **NEW TIME of 4 PM** Our Youth Choir learns about the traditions of our church including the singing of the unique service of Choral Evensong. This Advent service is beautiful and meditative and one of our most popular. This year there will be musical settings in the service by George Dyson, Ronald Arnatt, an anthem by Charles Wood, and responses by Harry Bramma. We have changed the time to 4 pm to accommodate the tree lighting ceremony in Concord. Come for a brief diversion from the holiday rush.

Youth Pro Musica Concert in Newton Sunday, December 11 at 4 PM My non-Trinity choir is a chorus for children ages 8-18 in greater Boston. We will be singing a concert on December 11 at 4 pm at the First Unitarian Society in West Newton. The concert will include in Dulci Jubilo by Dietrich Buxtehude, Bereite dich, Zion from the Christmas Oratorio by J. S. Bach, Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata and a premiere of a work by Curt Leland called The Three Holy Kings. See Robert Barney for ticket information.

Calling All Cooks! Trinity is responsible for providing lunch to feed the homeless and needy in Boston at the Cathedral on a monthly basis. We have a schedule of loyal folks who cook the spaghetti sauce in the church kitchen each month, but we need more people to join our team. This is a wonderful opportunity for a family activity. You will only be called on about once every 9 months; less if we get more people. You do not need to be a gourmet cook – the recipe is provided and simple and the ingredients will be in the refrigerator. It takes 1-2 hours. If you think you can help out or if you want to find out more, contact Brenda Hawes, 978-448-3359 or [email protected].

Handcrafted Gifts Sale December 4 during coffee hour This is a first-time event and we hope you will consider support-ing this project by either donating and/or purchasing something handmade. There will be gifts for all ages for your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, even yourself! We will be in the Undercroft selling items to support the Building for Ministry Capital Campaign. Some crafters have already donated items and we hope many more will do so as soon as possible. There are crafters still working on their items but so far we have baby blankets, sweaters, booties & hats, sweaters, hats & mittens, scarves for women and teens, dish cloths, note cards, herbs, cookies-in-a jar, table-top Christmas tree, children’s activity packs, felted purse, slippers , and more to come! All handcrafted items are welcome. If you have a specialty item you would like to donate, we would be pleased to sell it for the benefit of Trinity Church. Co-chairs for this project are Margo Rafuse and Barbara Carvey. Let us know if you need to have items picked up. Simply contact Margo Rafuse or Barbara Carvey.

Robert Frost’s Mending Wall contains two lines for consideration:

“Before I built a wall I'd ask to know what I was walling in or walling out”

At Trinity, our ministries are flourishing beyond the walls that were bought and built by previous generations; the privilege is now ours to build for current needs and for those we have yet to envision. Our new walls will neither wall in nor wall out, but rather, will provide adequate, welcoming and well equipped spaces for the work we perform in service to a world in need. In this late phase of the Building for Ministry campaign, one wall of the new building may need some explanation: the giving wall. The name of each parishioner or friend of Trinity who makes a financial commitment to the new parish house facility will be printed on the giving wall in the new space. Each gift is important to Trinity’s future, and each donor - with permission - will be recognized, without regard to the level of giving.* The Fall Phase of the Building for Ministry capital campaign is $1 million by Advent. Since the Spring Phase of the campaign, 124 gift commitments have been secured for a total of $3.2 million. With the additional support of approximately 150 parishioners and friends who have yet to be counted, the additional $1 million by Advent will help the Vestry bring the Parish Hall Facility into view. While your gift may be funded over four (4) years, please add your name to the new Parish House Facility and return your Building for Ministry envelope now. *Additional naming opportunities have been identified for several spaces (e.g. library, parlor, classrooms, nursery, teen center). Some of these spaces have been reserved as memorial gifts, gestures of thanksgiving, or anonymous kindnesses. See a member of the BFM for more information about honoring someone with a named space.

Undercroft blessings by Carol Brady

Warm Hands, Warm Hearts This November may our warm hearts, and those of our children, donate hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves to warm the hands, heads and necks of the children enrolled in the after school program of St. Stephen’s Church in the South End, our partner congregation. This program is growing in size, like us! Last year there were 60 children; this year the program serves 105 low-income children from Boston, ages 6 to 15. Can we meet this need? How warm is your heart? A set consisting of a hat and mittens/gloves is preferable. Scarves are also welcomed. Items should be new or hand-made. (Give your used winter items to Ecclesia Ministries via the large box by the church office.) There are 70 elementary children and 35 middle school age in the program, with an equal number of boys and girls. Bring items to Trinity by Sunday, November 20 and pin them on the clothesline in the downstairs hallway entrance to the Undercroft. If you prefer, you may also leave them in the box in the Narthex.

Children’s Chapel Children in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5 are invited to sing songs of praise and worship during Children’s Chapel in the Undercroft on Sunday,

November 13 at 10 am. A new Godly Play lesson will be presented: The Parable of the Talents, which coincides with the adult lectionary that week! The work-time response will include the making of mitten gift tags to decorate each hat & mitten/glove donation to St. Stephen’s.

Advent Wreath & Card Making Sunday, November 27 ~ 11:15 am Join us for an intergenerational activity in the Undercroft on November 27 following the 10 am service. A free will offering is welcome to help cover the cost of metal frames and candles. If you want to be green, bring your metal frame from last year! If you have them, bring: garden shears/scissors, gloves, ever-greens, and a box to take your wreath home. We will have plenty of holly, courtesy of Rick and Betty Ann Wheeler. This is a great way to transition into the Holy Waiting that Advent is all about. We will also have materials to create holiday cards for Concord prisoners. Help us to remember “the least of these.”

Advent Fun & Fellowship for Children Saturday, December 3 ~ 1:00 to 4:30 PM There’s much to be done as we wait and prepare for the birth of the Christ child. Children will make a Jesse Tree and 24 orna-ments, and bring home an Advent booklet that reflects on a different ornament each day until Christmas. They will have a chance to sing, practice Christmas carols, play games, eat snacks, and watch movies. Advance online registration is required by November 27 and there will be a suggested donation of $20 per child and $35 per family. This is a collaborative effort between Carol Brady, Robert Barney, and the J2A Pilgrim group. It’s purpose is to help children focus on Advent, as well as provide respite for parents during this busy season. Net proceeds will go to J2A Pilgrimage.

Joan Meenan, Artist Exhibit A resident of Sudbury since 1951, Joan Spottswood Meenan's art has been accepted in more than 150 local, regional and national juried shows. Known for landscapes and portraits in watercolor, Meenan has been the recipient of over eighty awards and prizes.

Meenan was the protege of the late Joseph L.C. Santoro, and has also studied with Martin Ahearn, and Carlton Plummer. In August 1994, her watercolor, The Student, was selected for “The Face of America: Contemporary Portraits in Watercolor” along with paintings by Robert Vickery and Andrew Wyeth. It was also published in “Watercolor 95, American Artists Magazine's Premier Winter Issue.”

Meenan states, “As long as I can remember drawing has been a passion. In my late teens I studied drawing at the Boston Center for Adult Education. However, a career as secretary to a bank president, marriage, building a house and raising three children interrupted my pursuit of art. In my mid-fifties, I joined a friend who suggested that we take a drawing course.” Drawing led to watercolor and oil painting. Studio painting led to painting en plein ire, and a chance meeting with Santoro, paved the way to Meenan's stunningly successful journey in the field of art.

The Art Gallery is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday thru Friday and during coffee hour following Sunday services. Please come in through the River Street entrance.
