Outreach Council Meeting @ Bungonia Hall

The next Community Meeting in the area will be on November 12 in the Bungonia Community Hall.

After each meeting community members are invited to join councillors and staff for light refreshments and the opportunity to chat further.

We want community members to have the chance to address Council and sometimes the meetings are just too big, so if you want to share what’s on your mind, please call and register your items for agenda.

Memorial Service for Jane Crick

The Rev Tom Frame will be conducting a memorial service for Jane on Sunday 10th November at 11am at St. Andrews Church, Tarago. Following the service a rose will be planted in her memory in the CWA garden. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the CWA Rooms.

Log book run program boosts learner driver skills

Goulburn Mulwaree Council holds regular free programs for local learner drivers and their parents or supervisors.

The next Parent Workshop – Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers - will be held on Wednesday, 6 November from 6pm-8pm in the Council Chambers. The workshop provides parents with advice about the new laws for Learner licence holders. It will also give information about supervising and using the logbook to the best advantage and the benefits of supervised on-road experience

The Logbook Run will be held on Sunday, 10 November from 11am. This event is held in conjunction with Goulburn Police, the Rotary Club of Goulburn and NSW Police Driver Training School. The learners follow a set route which includes a range of driving conditions and finishes at the Police Driver Training School.

At the Police Driver Training School the learner drivers receive practical tips about defensive driving and the Rotary Club of Goulburn will provide a BBQ lunch.

Windellama SES First Aid & CFR We were all hoping that our "unit" would be finished in time for the Field Day, but it is not to be, apparently, this is very disappointing to say the least. We have had a few callouts during the month. It is gratifying to get feedback from some of the ones treated.

On the subject of callouts, it would be appreciated if just maybe, some nice persons in the district would put their hands up to join our C.F.R. team. There is a lot of strain put on us to maintain the service of which we provide. As mentioned previously there are people who are very pleased to see us.

There is one lady who is receiving her tutoring as this goes to print, good on her!

Please also help us as S.E.S. and also the R.F.S. by cleaning out your roof gutters, as this is a favourite place for both water and fire to "enter" your premises. Yes, storms will come and they may be dry or wet. Fire destroys, water ruins.

Lost Dogs from John Pearce

Reports of lost dogs have become a regular occurrence in the Windellama district with signs appearing attached to trees reporting the loss in a desperate attempt to reunite the dog with its owner. The separation is extremely traumatic for both the owner and the dog and sadly the dog is seldom recovered, more than likely perishing in the bush through starvation or being shot by a landholder worried about sheep losses.

The course of events leading to the loss is usually the same. The dog is bought into the district by a new resident or by a visitor to the area and allowed to roam free. Excited about its new surroundings, the dog will usually catch sight of a kangaroo or rabbit and its hunting instinct will come to the fore and the chase will be on.

The dog is generally deaf to the pleading and yelling of its owner who makes a vain attempt to follow the dog. The dog doesn't give up until it loses its quarry and then finds itself lost. The dog, finding itself in an unfamiliar environment doesn't have the ability to retrace its steps, panics and heads off in the wrong direction, often never to be seen again.

It is hard to imagine the mental anguish suffered by the dog's owners, separated from their loved pet and the frustration at not knowing what to do and quite often having to leave the area without their dog. The anxiety of not knowing the dog's fate can develop into mental torture that can last for a long time.

There are simple precautions that can be taken to avoid this ever happening to you:

If the dog is with people visiting for a day or two it must be kept on the lead or held in a dog proof compound for the duration of the visit. This dog will not be lost and return home with its owners

A dog to be kept permanently should be allowed, while under control, to familiarise itself with its new surroundings and when walking in the bush should be kept on a lead for at least a couple of weeks and never encouraged to chase wildlife, in fact it must be trained not to do this. Young kangaroo joeys and wallabies when caught by dogs suffer an horrific death. There are heavy fines for owners of dogs killing native wildlife.

After walking with your dog restrained for several weeks it will become familiar with the area and know how to get home by itself if it becomes separated when it is finally let off the leash.

Know where your dog is at all times. As dogs by instinct like to wander at night it is important that it is locked up at this time.

Train your dog not to go down wombat holes. Dogs small enough to venture down wombat holes seldom emerge after encountering the resident wombat.

The chances of losing your dog and the resulting heartbreak will be avoided by following the suggestions above.

October was quite a busy time. We had a working bee early in the month and finished off some painting and general tidying up around the hall in time for the field day, which is fast approaching.

Following a busy market day in September, with a bus tour group from Sydney, we had an even bigger bus group of an Anglican Historical Society in October. The kitchen was very busy and the hall was full of customers for a while. It was great practice for the food outlets on the 2nd.

Plans for the field day are nearing completion and we are looking forward to another wonderful day. There will be live entertainment, with the favourites Wayne Ryder and his band, Neville Burns with his reptiles and tales of the bush. We will also have the perennial favourites for the children – jumping castle, animal nursery and face painting and there is also the chance to win with the “Pony Pat Competition”.

We are also looking forward to demonstrations during the day by “Mr Straw Bales” – Ken Longshaw, who will be showing us the art of straw bale construction. Ken has been a licensed builder for thirty years. He particularly enjoys working with straw bales and earth render and will be more than happy to pass on his knowledge.

We would be appreciative of assistance setting up on Friday, Saturday morning early and any help packing up at the end of the day.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday 18th November, at Windellama Hall, commencing at 2 p.m.

Strawbale Building, Wineries and Vintage Cars Don't forget to head down to the hall on Saturday 2 November for the 20th annual Windellama Small Farms Field Day. You'll find a wide range of exhibitors – from cars, tractors and heavy machinery through to livestock and aquaculture, renewable energy advice and equipment, fertilisers, organic goods and crafts. This year we also have strawbale building demonstrations throughout the day, wineries displaying their wares, and historic cars from the Veteran and Vintage Car Club of Goulburn. For entertainment, there will be hourly wildlife talks, live music and of course, the children's area. Come along to see the latest in sustainable and rural products, meet new suppliers and catch up with friends and neighbours. It's a great family day out.

Bronte School

The Windellama Historical Society’s next excursion will be to the old Bronte school on Mr Steven Hawke’s property. Until 1890 the school was called Mullengullenga School after the land Parish for the area.

The first school started in 1869, possibly in the home of some of the parents of the area. The next school was conducted in the nearby Bronte church after it opened in 1871.

There was a move in 1876 to build a school building on land adjacent to Hawke’s lane near Steven Hawke’s home. It isn’t known if this school was built but the present school, the one that we will be visiting was built in 1881-2.

It operated as a public school until 1905 when it reverted to a half time school with Quialigo School that was located at the back of Bullamalita homestead.

Bronte school closed for good in May 1910. Quialigo School closed on the same day but opened again in October 1917 only to close again, for the last time in July 1924.

This will be 30th November, we will meet at the museum at 9.30 for morning tea, and then heading to our excursion destination for a fantastic explore of some of our oldest history.

What’s Happening in Nerriga 2013 wasn’t a bad year for our annual Bargains in the Bush market day. Global and domestic conditions aside, this gave us an opportunity to try out our “new” Supper room since the wonderful new stove was connected and our plumbing and walls installed.

All went very smoothly, and we didn’t blow anyone up. We had a very successful day, thanks to the folk who came for tea ,coffee, cake and wonderful lunch. Thanks to all who helped out with the cooking and tending the counter and stalls.

The cake stall was once more a triumph, and NPSA's old wares and bric-a-brac stall fared very well. The day was pleasant until the dreaded wind visited again.

Thanks also to the Nerriga Gardeners who have put in a stalwart effort at two gardening days to make the Nerriga Hall look loved. Now it's up to nature.

We look forward to Melbourne Cup Day celebrations at Nerriga Pub.

On Tuesday 5th November we are holding a Melbourne Cup day at Di Andrews home, 10.30am - bring a plate and we will be doing sweeps.

A cheerio to Lynn who is nursing a broken leg at the moment after a fall at Gosford; we hope she has a speedy recovery.

Nerriga Garden Group had another working bee at Nerriga Hall. Hopefully the plants will settle in well although the wicked hot winds will undoubtedly take a toll on them.

On Wednesday 20th November we will be going on a bit of a mystery tour in the Mongarlowe area.

We will be meeting for a cuppa at Sandra & Robert South’s place, Lambing Flat, Mongarlowe at 10am, then off to visit two gar-dens. Please bring lunch with you & some-where we will stop & have a picnic.

We will meet at Nerriga Hotel at 9.15am to car pool.

The October Willow Glen Gardeners’ meeting was held at my place in Quialigo. I agreed at the meeting to take over writing for the Windellama News and the Whispers from Willow Glen blogspot as both Katie and Denise are now both unable to do this, being working girls. Huge thanks to both of you for doing such a great job and, of course, to Judy who took over in the interim – I know I won’t be half as good!

After a small false start when some members went to the wrong address (apologies to my neighbour) we had our usual delicious morning tea and an interesting question time. Next time I will take note of the questions and answers so that I can pass them on for general interest.

The day started off sunny but windy and a deterioration in the weather was forecast for later in the day. Unfortunately the weather caught up with us and our garden walk was cut short by a very cold wind and a drizzle of rain.

I haven’t much to say about my own garden, other than I was pleased with the grass (can’t call it lawn) and my young trees are doing well.

Thanks to Meg, the Horse Whisperer and to Warren, the Guardian of the Gate.

Next month’s Garden Club will be on Melbourne Cup Day at Ross and Joy’s, 55 Run-o-Waters Drive, Goulburn, starting at 11am. Bring your own meat for a barbeque. Joy will provide salads and tea and coffee. BYOG and something for dessert. Don’t forget your CRAZY HAT and $1 and $2 coins for the sweeps.

As well on every Thursday there are usually a member or members at the Art Shed from about 10am to 4pm when you might like to join them to draw and paint. It is quite informal on either the Thursdays or the Saturdays - just come and enjoy!

In Your November Garden From Irene Turner

Hopefully the frost will be over, and all summer vegetables and flowers can be planted.

VEGETABLES TO BE PLANTED: Seeds:- beans, both climbing and dwarf, carrots, beetroot, cabbages, silver beet, radish, parsnips, herbs, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, pumpkin, capsicum, sweet corn, lettuce, celery.

Tomatoes seed for late crop or plants to get them growing, when you plant your tomatoes seedling water them in with a weak solution of molasses this give them a sugar boost to get them growing. Put a cover over them if a frost is due.

FLOWERS: Ageratum, aster, carnations, cosmos, dahlia, linaria, lobelia, marigolds, petunias, phlox, portulaca, snapdragons and verbena.

Grow nasturtium near the garden they help deter the white cabbage moths.

Amaranthus, loves very hot weather grows to 1m with highly colourful foliage, needs soil built up with plenty of compost and balanced fertilizer.

Cosmos; Another flower that can be grown now. It reaches a height 1.5m tall, makes an excellent background, in a colour mixture of red, pinks and sprinkling of white. Seeds can be sown directly into the soil, likes a garden containing compost.

Gazanias; This dwarf perennial will grow in a garden with poor soil and plenty of sun. They are good for rockeries, boarder and banks. They come in colours of crimson, orange, yellow, cream and white.

Zinnia; These flowers prefer warm days and warm nights to grow. They like plenty of sun and well mulched beds give them a liberal dressing of complete fertilizer. Pinch back the centre shoot to promote growth laterals and a bushy plant. They come in colours of yellow,

gold, orange, crimson and purple.

Roses; Check them for any aphids, pick off or hose them off. If they need to be sprayed, with complete Rose spray, which will control pests and diseases

Spray roses suffering black spot, spread a layer of mulch around the rose plants to conserve moisture during hot dry months. Lucerne hay, which breaks down to improve soil structure and adds nutrients, is ideal. Get the second cut without the seeds.

Lawns; Can be fertilized, water in well. Use a complete lawn fertilizer or if you want to discourage clover apply sulphate of ammonia.

Cherry Trees; Both fruiting and ornamental, can be attacked by a cherry slug. They are easy to control by spraying with Malathion, Rogor, Carbaryl or dust the tree with Cabbage Dust

Things to do this month Prepare pot plants for hot weather by applying a wetting agent and adding mulch and water-storing crystals.

Treat fruit trees, grape vines, and passionfruit to a pre-summer pep up with a product such as Dynamic lifter plus fruit food.

Install a drip irrigation system before summer to take the pain out of watering.

If leaves of your gardenias or azaleas are yellowing, they`re likely to be suffering from magnesium deficiency. Give them a feed using a well-balanced fertilizer with trace elements, such as Osmocote plus trace elements. Or add half a teaspoon of Epsom salts to half a litre of water, stir thoroughly, then use to water them.

Well we certainly had a wild month with strong, strong winds. I do not like it having been in Cyclone Tracy. The Alpacas hate it and the girls do not like going up the hill. So they are brought into the Maternity paddock during the day. The creek flowed through once up to the top of the banks.

Mbale's leg is much better with various natural treatments and he is now having Living oil Rainbow treatment.

Ayni was desexed by Jan with full pain and anaesthetic and antibiotic treatment and was only down for a day and then was fine. We always have dissolvable stitches which are easier.

Unfortunately the strong winds blew most of the blossom in the orchard away but I have been planting some tagasaste grown from seed.

Only this week we had a kelpie come through our property from the back, the girls chased him and we rang neighbours until we found his person. He was an old boy and needs to be retired and treated with respect. It has been World Animal Week this week and all creatures should be treated as sentient beings which they are.!!

Both swallows and Willie Wagtails are building around our house walls.
