The Wilderness Voice "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord;  Make His paths straight'" (Matthew 3:3). We read of the public fo llowing that John had. There were the m ulti- tudes of people who came to John to hear his message and to be baptized  by him. It may even seem to be an enviable position. Yes; we see his un-  just death. We have no envy of being beheaded by the king. Still, his death, though a tragic result of his work, w as almost beside the point. John served the purpose of God. God use d John, and John wa s gladly used. He was a voice for god, and he was a voice in the wilderness of this world. Think about the wilderness that John knew. We may no- tice the unusual nature of this chosen man. He was dressed in the clothing of a man that is living a rough and “out of doors” life. And people trav- eled to the uninhab- ited place to hear him. It is true that he was a voice in a literal wil- derness. Still, that sparse area was some- thing of an analog y for the g reater wilderness. He was a v oice in a wilder- ness of spiritual poverty. It was not to a land barren of people to which he cried. It was to a land barren of righteous people. His v oice ca lled in an effort to pull and return hearers to the way of the Lord. We may not see ourselve s in the place o r likeness of John. After all, we were not so unusually selected to serve in such a preparatory and pro-  phetic fashion. Still, if we keep the picture of a spiritual wilderness, we may find som e common g round. For, there m ay be not g reater need than the need for a voice that is calling us all to turn back to the Lord. Think about it. We honor John as the voice of one cry ing in the wil- derness. Honor is due today; to the v oices that still cry in this crowded wilderness. We do so need the call to the straight path of the Lord. Russ February 10, 2013 Volume 13, Number 6

The Wilderness Voice

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight'" (Matthew 3:3).

We read of the public following that John had. There were the multi-tudes of people who came to John to hear his message and to be baptized

by him. It may even seem to be an enviable position. Yes; we see his un- just death. We have no envy of being beheaded by the king. Still, his

death, though a tragic result of his work, was almost beside the point. John

served the purpose of God. God used John, and John was gladly used. He

was a voice for god, and he was a voice in the wilderness of this world.

Think about the wilderness that John

knew. We may no- tice the unusual nature

of this chosen man. He was dressed in theclothing of a man that is living a rough

and “out of doors” life. And people trav-eled to the uninhab- ited place to hear him.

It is true that he was a voice in a literal wil-derness. Still, that sparse area was some-

thing of an analogy for the greater wilderness. He was a voice in a wilder-

ness of spiritual poverty. It was not to a land barren of people to which hecried. It was to a land barren of righteous people. His voice called in an

effort to pull and return hearers to the way of the Lord.

We may not see ourselves in the place or likeness of John. After all,we were not so unusually selected to serve in such a preparatory and pro-

phetic fashion. Still, if we keep the picture of a spiritual wilderness, wemay find some common ground. For, there may be not greater need than

the need for a voice that is calling us all to turn back to the Lord.

Think about it. We honor John as the voice of one crying in the wil-

derness. Honor is due today; to the voices that still cry in this crowded

wilderness. We do so need the call to the straight path of the Lord. Russ
