A Word from the Pastor
Valedictory Reflections on the Interim Year
By Pastor Rich Neal
Two angels visit your home each Friday evening as Sabbath begins, according to legend. If they find it neat
and bright, the good angel blesses it, saying, “So may this be each week as we return,” and against his will
the bad angel must say “Amen” as if he’s glad. But if the home is in disarray, the wicked angel prays that
confusion will reign again the next time they visit, while the good angel must sob, “Amen!”
Good endings are required for good beginnings. To make the best fresh start, we need to bring good
closure to what has gone before, whether we’re talking about weeks, jobs, marriages, or any other
significant experience or season of life. Even a single day. “Finish one day before you begin the next,”
Emerson advised, “and interpose a solid wall of sleep between two.”
Of course – you see where I’m going with this – it’s also true when a congregation changes pastors.
Such a change is much more than a time of grief and uncertainty. It’s also a time of high potential, one of
the greatest opportunities members of a congregation will have to influence its future. We need to celebrate
the past that has brought us to this transition, and then we need to close the door on it as we open the door
to the new future we’re involved in creating.
During this intentional interim year at North Rose United Methodist Church you have rethought and
reevaluated who you are, what you thought you were supposed to be, and what you valued and cared about.
You reaffirmed some priorities and commitments as part of a ministry that will continue. You have
recognized others as appropriate for their time but less relevant in the future, and you have let them go
gracefully. In short, you have kept your house in order as one long season of ministry has drawn to a close,
and I believe the good angel of pastoral transitions has blessed you for the new season of ministry with
Pastor Anne that is set to begin. It has been a blessing for me to have served with you during this year.
Unknown to me when I arrived in North Rose, this has turned out to be a time of exceptional transition
for me, also. At the end of my appointment here, I will officially retire from active parish ministry. Some
ideas about what comes next for me are brewing, but I don’t know what those ideas will become. What I do
know is that my time with you this year has helped me bring thirty-six years of pastoral ministry to a tidy
and good close, and you have helped me look to the future with hope and high expectation.
Knowing you, I have come to know myself better; my relationship with God has widened and
deepened, and the foundation upon which I will build what comes next has been strengthened. For all of
that, and for all of you I am grateful. As we prepare to bid farewell to one another, we can both look
forward to the future with great hope.

March 21, 2017
Dear Members and Friends of the North Rose United Methodist Church,
It is with great pleasure that we share good news. The Rev. Anne Bey Canfield has been
appointed by Bishop Webb to be our pastor starting on July 1st.
Rev. Anne grew up not far from the ocean in New Jersey. After graduating from the
University of Delaware and Harvard Seminary she chose to be ordained as a Methodist
minister. On March 18th our District Superintendent, Rev Jeff McDowell, introduced Anne and
her husband Larry to our Staff-Parish Relations Team. All present were most impressed by her
enthusiasm. Loving people of the church and a commitment to the community are her priorities.
She is experienced in working with all age groups. For the past 17 years she has served the
Waverly United Methodist Church. That congregation will be very sad to see her leave them.
Anne’s husband, Larry, is an instructor at the Elmira Business Institute. During the week he
will be remaining at their home in Athens, Pennsylvania but on most weekends he plans to join
us in North Rose, hopefully joining our choir’s tenor section. Larry has been an active church
member, leading small study groups among other things.
They have three children, Clayton who as a college graduate has a job in finance in the
Ithaca area; Jonathan who will be graduating from college in May and seeking a job in our area
as a nurse; and Catherine who will continue her studies at Millersville University in Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania.
Before attending a wedding in Waterloo last summer Anne and Larry had never been north
of Watkins Glen. They quickly discovered the beauty of the Finger Lakes region. Wait ‘til they
get to see our apple blossoms!!
Our team is very excited about this appointment and are most grateful to God for sending
Anne to us.
Yours in Christ,
Renee Stewart and members of the Staff-Parish Relations Team (SPRT)

Pastor Rich Neal
Our Sunday service on June 4th will not only be the last service conducted by Rev. Rich Neal in North
Rose, but also his final service before his official retirement as a pastor of the United Methodist Church.
A graduate of Drew Divinity School, he has faithfully served congregations large and small in New York
State, New Jersey, and Vermont for 36 years. We are SO grateful that he finally found his way to North Rose,
even for a short stay.
In appreciation of his dedicated service we are planning to honor him with a monetary gift to the mission of
his choice- our church’s Campership Fund. Those wishing to contribute to this fund are asked to designate Rich
Neal Fund on checks which should be payable to North Rose United Methodist Church and can be placed in the
offering plate or mailed to P.O. Box 369, North Rose, NY 14516.
Following the June 4th service everyone is invited to a Fellowship time when you will get a chance to
express your thanks for his good spiritual guidance this past year -- and suggest ways in which he can spend all
of his spare time in the future.
We know that retired Methodist pastors are much in demand as substitute preachers so he’d better not be
discarding books and sermon notes just yet. And Sheryl must have projects in mind to keep him from being
bored.
We wish Rich the very best for many productive and happy years in his retirement.
National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 4
Thurs. May 4, has been designated as the 66th Annual National Day of Prayer. Our
church sanctuary will be open from 9 a.m. to noon, for those who would like to spend
some time in quiet prayer and meditation.
Our theme for 2017 is For Your Great Name’s Sake! Hear Us... Forgive Us...Heal
Us! Taken from Daniel 9:19, which says, “O Lord, Listen! O Lord, Forgive! O Lord,
Hear and Act! For Your Sake, O My God...”. Scripture tells us again and again that our
fervent prayer is effective. That our loving God responds to His children’s earnest pleas in
mighty ways that avail much, and ultimately determine the course of history.
At this crucial time for our nation, we can do nothing more important than pray. Thank
you in advance for making this spiritual discipline a personal priority and for standing with us as we encourage
others to incorporate prayer in their lives. The Lord has graciously anointed our efforts, empowering them to
touch and change many hearts and lives. We look forward to seeing His hand move across our land in exciting
ways each May in response to our petitions! In closing, we ask that you prayerfully consider becoming a
volunteer in your church or community to lead a National Day of Prayer gathering. May the Lord’s peace fill
your heart as you rest in Him throughout the days ahead.

will take place downstairs in the east end of the Fellowship Hall (former choir room). There will also be nursery

Casowasco this summer. That way, we can keep your family up to date with news about camp and also camp
fund-raising. If you know of someone who thinks they might be going to camp (age 6 to high school), please
contact the church office, 587-9544. Thanks!

To My Friends at the North Rose UMC
I would like to let everyone know how grateful I am for your prayers, cards and well wishes. My doctor was
very pleased about the outcome of my operation. I will still need radiation, but that’s better than chemo again. I
do believe in prayers and now I know they work!
Thank you again. See you soon,

2017 Mission Trip to Henderson Settlement in Kentucky
We are hoping to plan a trip to Henderson Settlement in Kentucky this Summer. Space is reserved for about
fourteen people, and we will be looking for a few projects that will challenge even our great North Rose
workers.
Participants should be at least age 14 at the time of the trip, and we will give preference to our church
families. Others will be welcome as space permits.
Each participant should plan on paying about half of the total per-person cost of $400. We will be doing
fundraisers and seeking contributions from friends for the rest. If there is a young adult who would like to go,
but is having difficulty with the funding, please contact Steve Guthrie. We are committed to making sure that
all youth are able to be part of this life-changing opportunity.
We are already raising funds for 2017! Please support our activities as generously as possible:
Sun. May 21, 11:30 a.m. Chicken Barbecue
Returnable bottle and can collection. Please leave them in the south entrance at any time.
If you need more information, contact Steve Guthrie ([email protected]). Those who have made
the trip before know what a wonderful experience it is and how much it means to the families we have been
able to help. If you have not yet been to the Laurel Fork Valley of Kentucky, it can be a highlight of your life in
Christ.
Africa University celebrates 25th anniversary
Africa University – the first and only fully accredited institution of higher learning established on the
African continent by action of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church – recently celebrated its
25th anniversary. The celebration included a dinner for alumni and friends at Amber Hotel in Mutare,
Zimbabwe, the main celebration at Africa University’s graduation arena, and a celebration/worship service at
AU’s Kwang Lim Chapel.
With an enrollment of more than 1,500 full-time students and 800 part-time students, Africa University,
located in Old Mutare, Zimbabwe, today boasts more than 6,100 graduates from 32 African countries. More
than half of the students (53 percent) are female — more than double other universities throughout Africa.
The United Methodist Church’s support of AU – which was previously funded by the Upper New York
Conference’s Africa 360 initiative – has and will continue to produce a growing number of effective disciples
and tangible positive change. Investment in AU helps fund scholarships for African students who would
otherwise have no way to pay for a university education.
