    apathy in AmericaLiberty,.....

It almost seems as though it's a dirty word in society today. It is

shrugged o with an ignorance that is astounding. I have wit-

nessed the systematic dismantling of the Bill of Rights by our

government. Which has grown to such immense proportions, that it has no where

to left to go, but inside our homes. Today we see gross misconduct on the part of

the White house. Although it was the Bush administration that enacted policies

such as the "Patriot Act" and the" Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention

Act" of 2004. Which, as stated by Bush: "Continues the essential reorganization of

our government." The Obama administration has not only continued these same

oppressive policies, but expanded them and their scope. (But you can't criticize

him lest you be labeled a racist. Even though sensible people of all complexions

are criticizing him) ( Continued on page 3 )

Legislating Morality ( is it right?)

A new report blames sugary soda for the deaths of

6,000 Americans in the last decade, saying it contrib-

utes to obesity, heart disease and diabetes. The anal-

ysis from researchers at the University of California at

San Francisco has renewed debate over a proposedtax on so drinks to help reduce obesity.

New York state has considered a penny-per-ounce

tax on sodas, excluding diet sodas that don't contain

sugar. The plan got a big boost from New York City

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who said in his radio

address that a soda tax "makes sense," because it

could save lives and cut health care costs, and gener-

ate revenue for the state's schools and other pro-

    grams

Advocates who support the idea say it's similar to a

tax on cigarees and alcohol, and could improve the

public's health, but not all crics are convinced the

government should be making that choice for con-

    sumers.

" The fundamental issue with government geng

involved with, legislang, or creang policy that en-

courages and/or mandates "Morals", is that it is im-

possible to make a law on this issue, that represents

all of America. Since our society is so diverse, and

"Morals" are subjecve. Who is to say that what you,

I, or any governing body think, is morally correct, or in

fact, "Right." Since it is subjecve, we may only claim

    that what we think is morally, true, correct and right;

    Is so, only for ourselves.

This country was founded on the premiss that I can

not tell you what is right for you and you can not tell

    me,what is right for me.

    51% of the populaon does

not get to tell 49% how to

    live, what they should be-

    lieve, and how they should

    go about their daily lives.

99% of the populaon cannot take away the rights of

1%. Because, if the rights of

    1 person are not respected

    and preserved, than the

rights of us all, are subject

    to restricons.

    Legislang morality is not

about right and wrong! It's about our governments

belief that their version/idea of whats right, is worth

more and should carry more weight -in our lives, than

our own moral codes. As if to say that we are not responsi-

ble enough to decide what we should or should not put, In

our bodies, teach our children, and live our day to day

    lives.

It is not the role of government to adjust my moral com-

pass simply because it lies in a posion that is not popular,

or in-line with the current idea's that are propagated by

any polical party. I have the right as a individual soul, to

hold true in my heart what i see t. Even if my morals are

such that they cause me harm, as long as exercising my

moral prerogave does not infringe upon, or harm anyone

else. This is the very ber of what true freedom is. I have

the inherent right to be free of policy, law, and coercion,

in any form that creates an imperave that i change my, or

    conform to your, beliefs.

And exercising this right should NOT incur a penalty! No

person should nd it anymore taxing to exercise a right,

than it is to NOT exercise them.

The thing that makes this kind of "liberty restricon" so

hard to swallow is the fact that abroad, our government is

involved in and is the main oender in some the worst

human rights violaons to occur in history. To date, over

1,000,000 Iraq civilians have been brutally murdered as a

direct result of our governments moral imperave to

liberate the cizens of Iraq. (Opinion Business Research,

an independent research rm from London, England puts

    the esmate at 1,200,000 +/-

    2.5%) The number of Iraqi's

that have lost their homes, possessions, and Jobs?

*4,000,000* Yes, that's four million people who have

nothing to do with terrorism, or the 9/11 aacks. That is

equal to all the people in Philadelphia, Dallas, and San

    Diego put together!

The government that has caused all this

suering and death; Our government! These

are the same people that here at home, try

to tell us what we can and can not eat, drink

or smoke. Are they morally correct? I have

heard the argument that there is a basicstandard of morals that a society must ad-

here to, lest it break down into chaos. This is

of course common sense. But should it be

dictated to under threat of penalty? Or, can

we allow liberty to ourish in our society

once again? When we start believing the

propaganda that it is anyone's business what

you do in or with, your home, bedroom, or

body, than we are usurping the very principles on which

we profess to be trying to secure. By: Joey Spencer

I have the inherent right to be free of policy, law, and coercion, in any

This country was founded as a republic.

Where the rights of one person are just

as important as the rights of every per-

son. We have lapsed in responsibilities

as citizens. There is a price for liberty,

and eternal vigilance is that price. How-

ever, we must be vigilant toward those

in our government that abuse to privi-

ve Orders into eect in mes of

    increased internaonal tensions and

    economic or nancial crisis.

They are allowed by law, to freeze all your

nancial assets IE; bank accounts, savings

bonds, home, car, and even your pocket

money. They can detain you indenitely,

without a trial, or a lawyer present for your

defense. And they are allowed to do this, by

law, with out ever having to have or state a

reason. "No probable cause is needed" You

may think this is untrue, but i assure you, it

is very true. And you are encouraged to read

the Patriot Act, and all legislaon regarding

the restricon of liberty in the name of

"security" All of which is available online.

Some of you may be thinking; "Well, I am

not a criminal and they have no reason to

bother me." To that, I would ask two (2)

quesons: 1.) Would you allow a stranger to

HAVE THE POWER to come in your home

and do as he/she pleased? Even if you be-

lieved they would not exercise it? 2.) Have

you ever bean accused of doing, or saying

    something that you did not?

Remember, people that work for the federal

government are just people, they have sick-

nesses and faults, may even be depraved.

Just like like anyone else. You don't know

them, or what they will will do to you and

your family. Just because the work for the

government does not mean that they have

your best interest at heart. In fact, many

mes civilians are seen as "potenal com-

batants" No one should have that kind ofpower over another human being.

Apathy is the sickness of our society today.

We are so busy with our gadgets and or

entertainments that we have allowed poli-

cians to go about their abuses of power and

daily bribery taccs, with no fear or sense of

responsibility. (In fact, we morph them into

    celebries once they are exposed.)

We have become a naon of people who

are so estranged from each other and

fearful of our neighbor, that apathy, seems like it's us minding our own busi-

ness. But that's just it, this country and

the laws and policies that govern us, are

our business. And the business of our chil-

    dren.

When will America stand up as one peo-

ple, and say we have had enough? When

will we stop leng the media accentuate

what our dierences are, instead of the

many more things that we have in com-

    mon?

And when will we begin to see ourselves

as human beings instead of consumers?

I will stand next to anyone who is willing

to put their reputaon, livelihood, and

even their life, on the line so that my

daughter, and your children, will live in a

country that does start wars for the pur-pose of imposing our standards on anoth-

er people. (Just we would not want other

countries imposing their will upon us.)

A country where more money does not

    mean more important. Where personal

responsibility is not determined by a comi-

ty or a corporaon, but by the individual

for which it stands. Where freedom is not

a privilege or even a right, but inherent as

    breathing.

Freedom and liberty are of the same

soil, you can not have one without the

other. Security is necessary, but not at the

cost of the very thing you are trying to

    protect.

States may hold onto tax refunds for months

Residents eager to get their state tax refunds

may have a long wait this year: The reces-

sion has ed up cash and caused ocials in

half a dozen states to consider freezing re-

funds, in one case for as long as ve months.

States from New York to Hawaii that have

been hard-hit by the economic downturn say

they have either delayed refunds or are con-

sidering doing so because of budget

    shoralls.

"It's an indicator of how bad it is," says Sco

Pason, execuve director of the Naonal

Associaon of State Budget Ocers. "You

know things are bad when you have to do

    that."

New York, hit with a $9 billion decit, may

delay $500 million in refunds to keep the

state from running out of cash, says Gov.

    David Paterson.

Hawaii's Department of Taxaon says some

residents may not see state income tax re-

funds unl the end of August, The Honolulu

Adverser reported. It was part of a plan by

Gov. Linda Lingle to deal with a revenue

drop-o by pushing costs into the next scal

    period, which begins in July.

States oen do not have a metable for re-

funds because delays are based on cash

ow. Most states typically issue refunds

    within 30 days.

    Delaying refund checks isn't unprecedented,

Pason said, but it is something virtually no

polician wants to do, because taxpayers are

owed the money and in most cases want it

fast. Delays in paying refunds and other

state bills can trigger interest on those over-

due payments, depending on state laws, he

    said.

California's massive budget shorall of more

than $20 billion last year prompted it not

only to delay tax refunds but to issue billions

of dollars in IOUs to vendors and others who

were owed money. State Controller John

Chiang called the delayed payments a

"shameful chapter in the State's history"when the IOUs ended last September.

California sll faces budget problems, but

Chiang said that revenue is running ahead of

projecons so far this year, lessening the

    threat of a repeat.

"Californians should expect to receive their

hard-earned tax refunds on me," Chiang

    said.

The delays come as some states connue to

face deep budget holes, even as economists

say the naon as a whole has begun recov-

ery. In a recent report, the budget ocers

group and the Naonal Governors Associa-

    on said state scal condions

    "have connued to worsen," and

that state revenues can be ex-

pected to lag one to three years

    behind a naonal recovery fromrecession.

This scal year, the report said, 36

states have cut nearly $56 billion in

spending, and 30 states have cut

funding to public and higher educa-

    on.

Break the law and your new

    'friend' may be the FBI.

    WASHINGTON The Feds are on

    Facebook. And MySpace, LinkedIn and

    Twitter, too.

U.S. law enforcement agents are following the

rest of the Internet world into popular social-

networking services, going undercover with false

online proles to communicate with suspects and

gather private information, according to an inter-

nal Justice Department document that oers a

tantalizing glimpse of issues related to privacy

    and crime-ghting.

Think you know who's behind that "friend" re-

quest? Think again. Your new "friend" just might

    be the FBI.

The document, obtained in a Freedom of Infor-

mation Act lawsuit, makes clear that U.S. agents

are already logging on surreptitiously to exchange

messages with suspects, identify a target's friends

or relatives and browse private information such

as postings, personal photographs and video

    clips.

Among other purposes: Investigators can check

suspects' alibis by comparing stories told to police

with tweets sent at the same time about their

whereabouts. Online photos from a suspicious

spending spree people posing with jewelry,

guns or fancy cars can link suspects or their

    friends to robberies or burglaries.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Fran-

cisco-based civil liberties group, obtained the

Justice Department document when it sued the

agency and ve others in federal court. The 33-

page document underscores the importance of

social networking sites to U.S. authorities. The

foundation said it would publish the document

on its Web site on Tuesday.

Robert Kane Pappas, the director of Orwell Rolls in

His Grave, should be commended for his insightful,

tightly focused work, although it is unlikely that

he'll get any favorable mentions in the press. As

much as I liked Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, it

was far too sarcastic to really advance the debate

beyond name-calling. So while Republicans can

castigate the Left for its radicalism -- and anity

for the likes of Moore -- they can rest assured that

Pappas' work will remain obscure enough never to

pose a threat. For if it did get more attention, it

would be impossible to refute, as it is sober, meas-

ured, and far from an anti-Republican screed. Bush

and his gang of crooks are implicated as they must

be (especially for the appointment of FCC Chair-

man Michael Powell, a man who refuses to believe

that there is such a thing as a "public interest"), but

the issue goes beyond the current occupant of the

White House. In Orwell Rolls in His Grave, Pappas

has provocative answers to questions most people

will never hear directed to the corporate news me-

dia: Are Americans pathologically detached from

reality thanks to corporate manipulation and cen-

sorship of news? Isn't it ironic that in an era when

there are more news sources than ever before, regu-

lar folks are less and even misinformed because the

"news" is owned and operated by fewer and fewer

corporate persons with ever more convergent view-

    points?
