BACKGROUND TO THE PLAY
The Railway Children is a children’s book by Edith Nesbit, originally serialised in The London Magazine during 1905 and first published in book form in 1906. It has been adapted for the screen several times, of which the 1970 film version is the best known. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography credits Oswald Barron, who had a deep affection for Nesbit, with having provided the plot. The setting is thought to be inspired by Edith’s walks to Chelsfield railway station close to where she lived, and her observing the construction of the railway cutting and tunnel between Chelsfield and Knockholt.
The story has been adapted as a television series four times by the BBC. The first of these, in 1951, was in 8 episodes of 30 minutes each. A second adaptation was then produced, which re-used some of the film from the original series but also contained new material with slight cast changes. This had 4 episodes of 60 minutes each. The background orchestral music used in these early programs was the memorable and very lyrical second Dance from the Symphonic Dances by Edvard Grieg which we will also be using in this production to stir the memories of the mature members of our audience.
The BBC again revisited the story with an 8-episode series in 1957 and a 7-episode series in 1968. The 1968 adaptation was placed 96th in the BFI’s 100 Greatest British Television Programmes poll of 2000. It starred Jenny Agutter as Roberta and Gillian Bailey as Phyllis.
After the successful BBC dramatisation of 1968, the film rights were bought by the actor Lionel Jeffries, who wrote and directed the film, released in 1970. Jenny Agutter and Dinah Sheridan starred in the film. In October 1999, ITV made a new adaptation, as a made-for-television film. This time Jenny Agutter played the role of the mother.
DIRECTOR’S NOTES Having not directed for Wedmore for a few years, I said that I would like to direct the autumn production – not knowing that it was going to be suggested that we perform that wonderful classic, The Railway Children. At the time, I did not even know that this had been turned into a play but was only aware of it as a film.
We held auditions on 22nd July and having publicised this in both the IOW News and posters around the area, I was thrilled to bits with the number of people who came along to read the script and over 36 people put themselves forward for parts in the play. As a result, we have a real community play with a cast of over 30 people, many of whom have not acted with Wedmore Theatre before.
You may be wondering why some names have an A or a B alongside – well, we had so many wonderful youngsters come along to the audition that we didn’t want to disappoint any of them. As a result, we have two teams over the four performances and depending upon which performance you are watching, you will be seeing either Team A or Team B.
Directing two teams has certainly presented quite a challenge – both teams have rehearsed on the same evening. Not only did I have to tell the first team what I needed from them but then had tell the second team to do exactly the same thing. Some of the youngsters are in both teams and just occasionally I have been told by one of them that that was not what I had asked them to do first time round!
Staging a production is also a challenge when scenes are determined by the lighting, sound and use of different acting areas. We needed a cottage, garden, a station and a railway!
I have been so lucky to have had such a wonderful cast and crew to help me put on this production – it certainly could never have been performed without all those mentioned in the programme. I must make special mention of all the young people who are taking part – their enthusiasm has been catching. The speed with which they knew their lines was incredible and it has certainly helped with directing them. Our thanks also go to Sophie and her staff at Wedmore Village Store for selling tickets, and to the East Somerset Railway and to all those who have loaned us props.
For many of us of a certain age, we remember with great fondness the film directed by Lionel Jefferies. Whenever I see it (usually at Christmas when it is one of the staple films that are put on at that time) I cry at the end. It is a film with such an iconic ending.

Aurora Bedford Phyllis (TEAM B) Aurora has played Alice in Alice in Wonderland, Iris in Fame, Flounder in The Little Mermaid for Winscombe Youth Theatre and also acted in Singin’ In the Rain. Her ballet training is at Caroline Barlow School of Dance and at Swindon Dance, and she has gained Merit and Distinction grades in several LAMDA exams.
Sonya Bull Passenger/passer-by Sonya hasn’t been onstage for a while (apart from singing and playing clarinet with her band – Insomniac Jack) but has previously been in productions with Salisbury Operatic Society and others. She says “My most famous role was Toad in Toad of Toad Hall (quite a few years ago!)”
Jack Bethell Alfred Perks Although Jack is one of our youngest debutants in The Railway Children, he already has a distinguished acting career locally, having appeared in productions at Wedmore First School and Mark Youth Theatre. He currently attends Hugh Sexey’s Middle School, and says “I love acting because it helps me express my
feelings”.
Ella Bolger Roberta (TEAM A) Ella studies Performing Arts at Bridgwater College and, before her debut with WT’s The Railway Children, she had made many appearances with Mark Youth Theatre and at school, playing such leading roles as Rizzo in Grease and The Lion in The Wizard of Oz.
Andrea Brenner Doctor Forrest Andrea has appeared in a number of WT productions over many years, including Under Milk Wood, Bazaar and Rummage, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? and The Panto That Goes Wrong. She is a former Chair of Wedmore Theatre, and now owns Wedmore’s Pumpkin Delicatessen and Café.
Chloe Creaser Bert Perks This is Chloe’s WT debut. She is a member of Wells Little Theatre and has appeared in numerous pantomimes since the age of 6, including playing a dwarf in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. She also played Gracie in Little Lights Up 3 with WLT. Chloe attends South West School of Dance where she studies ballet, tap,
modern, musical theatre and contemporary.
David Cole Old Gentleman In his nearly 30 years as a WT stalwart, David has played many leading roles, including in Chekhov’s The Bear, Oh! What A Lovely War, 1066 And All That (in which he performed a memorable striptease!), Mansfield Park, Pack of Lies, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Panto That Goes Wrong. Over the years he has also directed
a number of plays and revues for WT
Elizabeth Coulter Passenger/villager Elizabeth has played many major and leading roles in WT productions over the last 30 years, including Cleopatra, the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet, the Rev Mompesson’s wife in The Roses of Eyam and Miss Prism in The Importance of Being Earnest. Last year she gave a memorable solo performance in Soldiering On, one of a
Talking Heads trio of monologues by Alan Bennett.
Clarissa Dawkins Hound/villager Clarissa has been in three of Theale Players’ legendary pantos: Jack and the Beanstalk, Aladdin and Robin Hood, as well as in WT’s Panto That Goes Wrong last year. She has trained in acting skills with Louise Merryfield’s ‘Acting Up’, and had dance training with Bristol School of Ballet and Kaye Morgan-Anstey
Honor Farnie Emma Perks (TEAM A) Honor’s debut with WT was in The Panto That Goes Wrong last year. She has a successful performing career behind her at Sidcot School, where she has played The Narrator in various Christmas plays. Honor is known for her expert puzzle solving and knitting. If you stand still for long enough she will knit you a hat.
Stephen Farnie Father Stephen’s very first acting job was in last year’s The Panto That Goes Wrong, although in his youth he regularly appeared onstage playing in jazz bands. He now runs the Wedmore Cubs and has recently learned to lindyhop (whatever that is).
Ren Fayers Mrs Perks Ren began her onstage life aged 6 at dance school and in school productions. Since then she has appeared in many shows, including pantos. As a semi-professional percussionist, she switched to playing in bands and orchestras - from the 'pit' to the Albert Hall. She starred in the kitkat band in Cabaret, and as Prince Charming and Bob
Cratchit’s wife in Scrooge. She made her WT debut last year as Mercutio in The Panto That Goes Wrong.
Zoe Folland Edith Perks (TEAM A) Zoe’s performing talents cover a wide spectrum. She has acted in the Theale panto, and sings with different bands at Bagley Baptist Church. She plays the piano and clarinet, and has performed in local concerts including at the Panborough Folk Club. She recently attended WT’s series of acting/directing workshops with John Hartoch of
Bristol Old Vic.
Matilda Friend Phyllis (TEAM A) Matilda loves drama and has performed in shows at the Wells Little Theatre with Wells Academy of Theatrical Arts, sang in Joseph for her year 4 school play and has won gold medals at Weston and Highbridge Junior Arts Festivals for both poetry and prose speaking. Matilda played two
roles in The Panto That Goes Wrong last year, and also attended WT’s theatre workshop this summer. She is already aiming for drama school and hoping for a glittering acting career!
Isla Gardiner Roberta (TEAM B) Isla has appeared in a number of school productions over the years, including Alice in Wonderland. She attends the Kings of Wessex Showcase Club, and also studies ballet and piano. This year she participated in WT’s summer Theatrical Workshops with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s John Hartoch.
Samuel Kolind Peter (TEAM B) Samuel played the lead role of Simba in The Lion King at Wedmore First School. He takes singing lessons and studies flute and guitar – the latter instrument he also plays in his band, called The Royal Bandits. He plays football for Wedmore under-10s, and writes and draws his own comics.
Kathryn Jones Mother Kathryn has a BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre Studies, and it seems WT may once have contributed to her stellar career! She played Mae Rose Cottage in our Under Milk Wood, and Lead Wolf in The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. She then starred in a number of Mark Youth Theatre productions: Ratty in Wind in the Willows,
Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, and Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For Wells Community Youth Theatre she played three Shakespearean leads: Juliet, Titania/Hippolyta and Gertrude. Kathryn has acted in several TV productions, including Sherlock and Father Brown.
Peter Langley Mr Szczepansky and District Superintendent For WT, Peter has played in Pack of Lies, Now We Are Married, The Chekhov Comedies, Under Milk Wood, Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Scottish Panto and The Bourgeois Nobleman, in which he played the eponymous lead. He also appeared in The Rescue, Habeas Corpus, Carrot, Once a Catholic, London Assurance, The
Importance of Being Earnest, and The Panto That Goes Wrong. In spite of his talent for playing decrepit old fools, we suspect him of being rather clever, as he was formerly Professor of Biology at Cardiff University.
Caitlin McDonnell Hound and passer-by Caitlin is making her acting debut with Wedmore Theatre in The Railway Children. She has previously performed in a number of productions both at Winscombe Youth Theatre and at Hugh Sexeys School, where she also takes singing lessons.
Phoebe Munro Edith Perks (TEAM B) Phoebe is an experienced trouper, having appeared in Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies, Rock Bottom, Pirates of the Curry Bean, Mary Poppins, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Wicked and Peter Pan. She attends the Wells Academy of Theatrical Arts, has trained at dance school for three years, and has been in a Weston
Panto. She modestly declares “I have had a solo in a show” but declines to reveal which one!
Nigel Newton Albert Perks This is Nigel’s WT debut. Previously he was with Axbridge Community Theatre, playing Harry Brewer and John Wisehammer (two roles) in Our Country’s Good, Philip Welch in The Deep Blue Sea, Harry Robinson in The Ladykillers and Frank Lubey in All My Sons. He also appeared in Twelfth Night at Axbridge and in Aladdin and also in Mack
and Mabel at Strode Theatre. In Manchester he played in The Monkey’s Paw. Nigel sings with Axbridge Community Choir and in theatrical productions. He has written and directed a number of one-act comedies
Patsy Newton Mrs Walker and passer-by This is Patsy’s debut with WT. Previously Patsy was in The Ladykillers and she played Mary Brenham in Our Country’s Good at Axbridge Community Theatre.
Amy Purcell Joan Perks Amy played Young Nala in The Lion King when she was at Wedmore First School. She has also appeared in Mark Youth Theatre productions, and studies contemporary dance. In addition, she is learning to play both the piano and the trombone.
Georgina Sweet Jim Georgina sang and understudied Joseph in Joseph, and played the inspector in Magpie Manor at Wells Little Theatre, where she has performed in a number of productions. Her singing won her the Hugh Sexey Talent Show last year. She attends Wells Academy of Theatrical Arts, Mark Youth Theatre, Kings Street Dance and takes
singing lessons with Elspeth Salmon, and piano with Teresa Barlow. Best keep her onside, though – she has a Black Belt in Kickboxing!
Hannah Tipping –Emma Perks (Team B) Hannah loves performing, especially singing and dancing, where her interests lie in both ballet and contemporary dance. She has been in a number of school productions, including playing a lioness in The Lion King. She has attended four years of ‘Acting Up’ classes, in between caring for her pet chicken and two guinea pigs.
Gabriel Todesco-Bond Peter (Team A) Gabriel was in the UK tour of Joseph at Bath, Bristol and Cardiff, and played Benji in the UK tour of Priscilla at Bristol Hippodrome. He attends Wells Ballet School, Somerset Umbrella Dance and Amanda Salmon-Board Musical Theatre classes. He has passed LAMDA level 3 in both Acting and Musical Theatre, and also studies
violin and piano – not to be confused with what he describes as ‘rocking out’ on the electric guitar!
Libby Tucker John Perks Libby made her WT debut last year, playing Benvolio in The Panto That Goes Wrong, although she has appeared in a number of productions at Kings of Wessex Academy, including Alice in Wonderland. Libby attended WT’s Theatrical Workshops with John Hartoch earlier in the year. She also studies both ballet and modern dance.
Jendy Weekes Director Jendy began acting over 40 years ago and has been a member of Wedmore Theatre for 19 years. During that time she has proved herself a complete all-rounder, having both acted, directed and served on the Committee. She is also an experienced Stage Manager and has frequently been ‘Prompt’ for WT productions. Her acting
roles have included Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, Once A Catholic and The Panto That Goes Wrong. For WT she has directed Confusions, Deadly Nightcap, Living Together, Home, and An Evening of Reflections to commemorate the ending of the Second World War.
Holly Woodward Passenger/passer-by Holly hasn’t been on the stage since she was at school but, fortunately for all of us, she says she “wanted to experience being part of Wedmore Theatre”. We think she must be a bit of an angel – her day job is as a nurse.
Jack Woodward Passenger/passer-by and hound This is Jack’s WT debut, and he says it is his “first experience of being part of a grand-scale production”! However, he has received a good dramatic grounding, appearing in various Wedmore First School productions, where he still attends in Year 4.
Oliver Woodward Passenger/passer-by and hound Oliver is a keen and seasoned stage actor, having been in a number of productions both at the First School and at Hugh Sexey’s. He enjoyed being in the Theale panto this year, and he also attends Lou Merrifield’s ‘Acting Up’ drama classes.
