What’s in a Baptism?

People seek baptism for many reasons. In

our tradition, children and teens are bap-

tized. Adults are baptized. Why? What are

they doing? The pastor will talk about this

next Sunday and invite you to remember

your own baptism. Rebecca Hubbard, who

grew up at Weatherly, will be baptized.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January 22

Our church will participate with other community churches again this year for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The pastor and Rev. Christie Ashton, pastor of Hope Presbyterian Church, will do their pulpit swap. Then we will gather for a community Christian Unity service at All Saints Lutheran Church at 6 p.m. Father Phil O’Kennedy will be the guest speaker.

I always like the beginning of a new year. A whole year, 365 days, lies before us. What does that mean for our families, our children? What does that mean for our jobs? What does that mean for our church? To begin this year, Handy, Patrick and I want to hear from you. What are your hopes for this year? What are your dreams? What are your ideas? What are your concerns? This Sunday at 3 p.m. we invite you to a Chat with the Staff in room 215. It will be very informal. Please come and share your hopes, dreams, ideas, and concerns. They will help us plan for the new year.

Adults also begin a new Bible study on Wednesday nights. The group selected the book of Genesis. For my 33 years of ministry, I’ve wanted to lead a study of Genesis. I finally get to do so. Adult Bible Study is an informal study time. I cover a passage, share my thoughts about it, and then we have some time for discussion. I hope you will join us at 6:15 in room 215. Dinner begins at 5:30, so call and make a reservation.

I’m excited that a young woman who grew up at Weatherly and moved away has requested to be baptized here. Rebecca Hubbard is a student now at Troy University. She is the daughter of Bryant and Lisa Malone and the granddaughter of Dwight and Pat Malone. She will be baptized this Sunday. I will invite all who are present to remember their own baptism.

C. S. Lewis once said, “There are far, far better thing ahead than any we leave behind.” I agree. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year with you.

Called Business Meeting

We will have a called business meeting on January 11 to hear a motion from the Personnel Committee regarding the Minister of Music’s schedule and job responsibilities.

Judy and I wanted to thank Weatherly Heights Baptist Church for the wonderful presentation of the Moravian Feast Service. We have attended several, and we believe this was the finest. After 11 years at WHBC, I am leaving my position as Administrative Assistant in order to take a new position at a Huntsville business. As I leave Weatherly, I have much to be thankful for. Handy Happenings…….. Several months ago I approached the Personnel Committee about a decision that Elaine and I have discussed for some time: semi-retirement. I am not a person who can go into retirement "cold turkey" which is to say, work and then abruptly stop work. In the meeting with the Personnel Committee I made the request to make a change in my work responsibilities to allow me to work a 18-20 hour work week beginning in February, 2017. This was approved by the committee and announced at the Deacon's council in December. On Wednesday, January 11 it will be presented to the church as a recommendation that I be allowed to develop this new job description which will basically be to continue as minister of music without other direct responsibilities in non-music related areas. There have never been changes in my life that did not need to be finely tuned--and this will certainly be one as these administrative and ministerial duties are developed. I ask that you consider this as a prayer request for God to lead us all in making this a success.
