The ‘WAFFLE’ Issue 8: 29th July 2019
Our vision: We aim to improve the world, one Booyal student at a time, by challenging and
supporting every student to reach their absolute potential in learning and behaviour whilst
encouraging them to demonstrate an enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude, care for each other,
contribute positively to the wider world, dream big, think ‘outside the box and have a healthy
dose of fun along the way!
Our 2019 priorities are …writing & spelling
G’day everyone,
Whoosh!!....and in a blink of an eye the holidays were over!
I hope that you and yours escaped the bugs that were doing the rounds and
stayed well enough to enjoy the break. Other than a couple of students, we
have pretty much had a full roll up since Day 1 so, fingers crossed, the
worst of the sickness that was hitting us hard before the holidays has
gone.
It is terrific to have Mrs Vaughan back after her globetrotting toCanada.
She had a fabulous time and some great photos to share.
Thanks to Miss Dale (a.k.a. Miss D) for taking Mr Harris’s lessons during his absence in
Week 1. Mr Harris will return next week for business as usual.
Reports: Reports were sent home last week. By now you should have
received a text to organise a parent-teacher meeting. Please reply to either
confirm or suggest another time that is convenient for you.
To keep you ‘in the loop’ about your child’s writing progress, a sample of
their work will be photocopied and sent home, at least on a fortnightly basis
(if not weekly). It will, hopefully, be a reason to congratulate your child on
their effort and also keep you aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
Please see a staff member at any time if you would like to discuss any
issues.
Attachment(s): Your child/ren’s Term 2 reflection sheet(s)
Missing Anything? Last term students checked their supplies and took
home a list of things they needed. Can you please double-check that your
child has enough pens, books etc. We have a couple of students who have
run out of writing books.
School Photos: Last week we received a message from the photographers
stating that photos should be at school within the next few days. If you
have any questions or concerns about your child/ren’s photos please contact
the photographers, Donna and Paul directly by phoning 0427 946 360.
Media Arts Excursion: The Year 4 – 6 students travelled to Burnett Heads
in Week 1 to interview outback boxing legend, Fred Brophy. Fred was
extremely generous with his time, answering a wonderful variety of
questions and showing everyone around the tent. The children will make a
collaborative documentary about him as part of their Media Arts unit,
(before creating individual documentaries about staff members) and, in English, they will
make an informative brochure about the troupe. Stay tuned!
Pirates On The Loose! You may
have notice a mutiny of pirates
escaping from school last week
thanks to Denise Rapkins from
Childers’ Library who worked
with the Year 1-3 students on a craft activity related to a
story she read them. The children thoroughly enjoyed this
activity and certainly looked the part in their snazzy pirate
hats. They will travel to Childers to participate in more
‘Read To Me Day’ activities on 28th August.
Term 2 Super Spellers: Congratulations to Beau, Lucia and Olivia who averaged over 95%
in their spelling tests last term. As a celebratory treat they and their parents were
invited to a special morning tea last week. I think Beau is a few kilos heavier after the
amount of goodies he devoured! It was a well earnt treat for them all.
Tuckshop: Order forms were sent home last week. Please contact a staff
member if yours didn’t arrive. Tuckshop will be available tomorrow, (Tuesday,
30th July).
‘Loose Ends’ Performance: Today we travelled in Chook’s bus to the
Paragon in Childers to watch ‘Loose Ends’, a live performance about
friendships and creativity. A great time was had by all.
Woolies Stickers: A big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who collected ‘Earn &
Learn’ stickers on our behalf. We have used the credits to purchase
some new robotic equipment for students to program and learn how to
code, as well as another truck for the sandpit. Some
stickers were sent into school late but we will hold onto
them until next year. Thank you all!
Fun Afternoon: The Project Club committee have organised another great
flood relief fundraiser. On Thursday 15th August students and family
members are invited to enjoy a board games, sausage sizzle and movie
afternoon/evening. Details were sent home last week.
Book Donation: We were delighted to receive a donation of two
beautiful photographic books; ‘The Grower, The Heartbeat Of
Australia’ and ‘The Grower, The Roots Of Australia.’ They are valued
at $200.
The set of books were proudly donated by John Nociletti to enable
young Australians to connect where their food and fibre comes from.
As an adolescent, John left home with $200 to his name and carved
out a great life for himself in agriculture. He is walking proof that
anything is possible and hopes that, through these books, he can
inspire the farmers of tomorrow by highlighting the importance of
Australia’s agricultural industry and the amazing career opportunities
it presents.
The books are very large and quite beautiful. If any parent would like to have a look please
see me; you are welcome to borrow them. I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy flicking
through the pages.
Finally!! Approval has been given and a contractor lined up to fix our
water (or lack of water!) situation. A new bore will be drilled, probably
on the school ground, so before long we should be able to enjoy some
green lawns and healthy garden beds around school. Yay!
Please come along to the next P&C meeting on Tuesday 6th August (next
week); 3 pm in the classroom. Meetings are friendly, short and sweet.
You won’t be saddled with a job but your ideas and input will be very
much appreciated.
The P&C ladies would love some help preparing and serving
tuckshop this Tuesday morning. If you are able to help please see
Desrae, Nancy or Kerry. Thank you.
BREAKFAST CLUB
This year is have become obvious that some students are regularly arriving at school
hungry, not having eaten breakfast. Some are also routinely arriving tired, yawning and
having difficulty concentrating from the word go. Not only is this sad for the wellbeing of
the child but their ability to learn is being affected. It is a long time until morning tea.
Staff can not make sure that some children get them to bed earlier but, between 8.30
a.m. and 8.45 a.m., breakfast will be available at school for those who need it; toast or
cereal. Clearly it is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that children eat before leaving
home but it has got to the point that we feel the need to do something. Thank you to Mr
and Mrs Vaughan for sponsoring this breakfast service.
Do you know… the ‘dingo fence’ is the longest fence in the world, (5,530 km). It is
almost twice as long as The Great Wall Of China.

Well done, everyone.
