The ‘WAFFLE’ Issue 3: 17th March 2017

Our vision: We aim to improve the world, one Booyal student at a time, by challenging and

supporting every student to reach their absolute potential in learning and behaviour whilst

encouraging them to demonstrate an enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude, care for each other,

contribute positively to the wider world, dream big, think ‘outside the box and have a healthy

dose of fun along the way!

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the end of Week 8 – there are only two weeks left until the holidays. Where

did the term go?

Today Project Club held a St Patrick’s Day fundraiser. The day had a fun

Irish theme, including lunchtime games and music. It was great to see the

students getting into the spirit of things by coming to school wearing green.

The delicious Booyal Bunyip green spiders were enjoyed, along with cups of

green jelly and sprinkles. Photos will be included in the next Waffle.

Thank you for also supporting the Project Club’s first fundraising

activity for the year. As you can see from the photos later in the

newsletter Crazy Hair Day was lots of fun. Everyone got into the

spirit of things and looked great. We certainly have some very

talented (and patient!) mums and dads around Booyal.

Congratulations to the Doc, Jessica and Kaylah for organising both fundraising days. All

money raised go towards excursions that the students would like to organise at the end of

Semesters 2 & 4.

Cross Country Carnival: This year the Small Schools’ Cross Country

Carnival will be held at Booyal Central on Friday 21st April. Our P&C

will operate a tuckshop. An order form is attached. If you would like

anything please ensure that it is returned no later than Tuesday 28th

March. Thank you.

Principals’ Conference: I recently joined over 1,200 principals from around Queensland at

the 2017 Principals’ Conference on the Gold Coast. The conferences are held every two

years and all principals are required to attend. The theme for the conference this year

was: Every student, every school: lighting the path for innovation, equity and impact. There were

some really interesting speakers who had information that can be applied in our little

school setting. A presentation by VC recipient Mark Donaldson was particularly inspiring.

P&C AGM: Many thanks to those who attended the P&C AGM last week.

Congratulations to our new P&C executive:

President: Kerry Mandrek

Vice President: Karen Ryan

Treasurer: Desrae Bendell

Secretary: Nancy Warren

The P&C is a vital part of our school and we greatly appreciate the wonderful work they do

to support the learning outcomes of all our students.

Sincere thanks go to outgoing committee members David Horner, Heather McMahon and

Robyn Vella on a job well done. Their tireless effort and commitment to all P&C activities,

especially in our busy centenary year, is acknowledged and greatly appreciated.

School Photos: Photos were taken last Monday and should be ready by the end of

term.

Farewell Melanie: On Friday we fare welled Mrs Pape

who is extending her hours at Childers State School.

Mel became a valued member of the Booyal team,

working hard to ensure that students always had a

clean and healthy environment in which to learn and

play. We express our thanks and wish her all the best

for the future.

Position Vacant: The position of school cleaner is currently being advertised. Please see

below for details. As from today, Mrs Rowe returns as relief cleaner until a permanent

Clean Up Australia Day: Booyalians recently participated in Clean Up Australia Day,

scouring the grounds and car park to make sure that our school looked extra ‘schmick’. Our

students joined hundreds of thousands of other people around the country who took time

to clean up their local environment. Well done everyone!

Visit From Mr Ilett: ‘Survival in Australian Environments’ is the topic being explored in

Year 5/6 Science. The children are learning about adaptations animals and plants have

made to help their everyday survival, as well as in extreme environments. As part of this

unit, the children searched for evidence of animal activity and adaptation in the school

grounds. Mr Ilett visited and demonstrated how detailed information can be obtained

from observing animal tracks.

He also brought his stereoscope (microscope) and the children were able to observe,

close-up, how some insects have adapted to aid survival (e.g. mouthparts, eyes).

While Mr Ilett was at school, the younger children were also given the opportunity to peer

down the microscope and were amazed at what they could see.

Nature Out Of The Box: Art for Year 3-6 students this semester is about using “found

objects” to express ideas and feelings. Much of this artwork is ‘ephemeral’ which, the

children have learnt, means short-lived. As well as individual pieces, the children have

worked collaboratively to construct a whole-group installation entitled “Nature out of the

box”.

THANK YOU: A big ‘Thank You’ to those parents who have volunteered time in class or

donated items for the prize box this semester. The children benefit from

your effort and we really appreciate the support.

CAMP: I can now confirm that camp will be held from Wednesday 9th

– Friday 11th August. Please note that due to an increased number of

students and the complexity of the classes this year camp will be for

Year 2-6 students only. The Prep & Year One students will not miss

out though. Mrs Hollier is organising three exciting excursions for

them throughout the year. The lower grade class will operate as per

usual when the older students are on camp.

A final cost will be confirmed after the next P&C meeting; I expect it to be approximately

$100. A layby option is alreadty available. If payments start now, saving $5 a week will see

camp paid for in time.

Leadership Day: There has been a change to the venue and date

of the Year 4, 5 and 6 Booyal Bunyips’ leadership day with

students from Dallarnil and Cordalba State Schools. It will now

be held at Lake Redbrook at 122 Farnsfield Road on Tuesday

21st March. Permission forms were sent home last week. Cost is

$15, which includes morning tea, lunch and all activities. Please

see me if you have any questions. If payment before we leave is

an issue please do not hesitate to come and have a chat. I am sure that we can work

something out.

Chappie Shane, (Mrs Turner’s son), visited on Tuesday. He spent time talking to the

students about the leadership excursion and discussed different personality types.

Everyone had the chance to explore their traits, as well as those of people with different

personalities. It was a valuable learning opportunity and should help teams operate even

more effectively next Tuesday.

The Preps and Year 1s have been learning about our school’s behaviour code and what it

means to # Be Safe # Be Respectful and to # Be Responsible . They have been earning

stickers in class for following our behaviour rules. Most have earned 20 stickers for which

they earn a prize from our reward box. They still receive GOTCHAS for effort completing

their class work and lining up.

Thanks for all the effort you are putting into homework. A mid- term assessment of

reading has shown a marked improvement in reading ability. Our preps are beginning to

recall some alphabet letters and the sounds the letters make and are happily reading

beginner texts to each other and the adults in the room. Daily reading practice is the key

to developing a love of reading. We have quite a few budding scientists who loved looking

at insects through Mr Iletts’ microscope. Thanks to Mr Ilett for extending our interest in

living things.
