We had many friends visit the School of Innovation this week. U.S. Congress-
man Dave Joyce stopped by to discuss government and the role he plays in
Washington. Entrepreneur Mitch Allen, President of Vanderhaven Group Pub-
lishing, spoke to our students about owning a business and the different media
that exist. Finally, Marjie Ulyan from the Cleveland Zoo visited to talk about
careers at the Zoo and the excitement she has for working with animals. The
students did a terrific job as an audience. They were attentive, asked great
questions, and seemed to learn quite a bit from each speaker.
SOI after-school clubs are awesome! The traffic we are experiencing at pick-
up is NOT. Please see the REVISED club schedule and pick-up procedure.
Hopefully it will alleviate some of the congestion in the parking lot.

SOI NEWS AND NOTES
The W-E SOI PTO will begin selling POPCORN on the dates listed
below. Just bring in your money and give it to your homeroom teacher.
The popcorn will be delivered to students before the end of the day
(to be eaten at home!). This starts Friday, March 11th!
This week the 3rd graders learned about folktales, point-of-view, contractions and we continued to work on fictional narratives. In math we continue to grow in our multiplication and division knowledge, used algebraic equa-tions and expressions, solved multi-step word problems, and Mrs. W’s class even added, sub-tracted, multiplied and fractions! Great job on the SUM DOG National Competition. Do not forget your child can complete Connect Ed, COMPASS, No Red Ink, and Typing Club from home for extra practice!
Some conversation prompts for you to
ask your child:
“Why is the story Wonder a GREAT exam-ple to use when talking about Point of View? Who is the narrator(s) of the story, Wonder?”
“What did you do in math this week? What skill are you working on?”
“What is the problem in your energy robot narrative? Have you finished publishing it?”

4th grade Weekly Update
The Defined STEM Solar Challenge was certainly the highlight of the week. Students presented to a fictional committee from a fictional school from Buffalo, NY. That school was interested in learning more about solar energy and the possibility of installing them in their school. Students and teachers were im-pressed with the quality of the presen-tations and information that was
presented AND we had fun because the teachers spoke with New York ac-cents! We’ve wrapped up long division and decimal division and are heading in-to patterns and order of operations in Math. Our whole class novel is such a HOOT! Actually, it’s titled HOOT and the students enjoy reading it. We’ve been focusing on characterization and word study.

5th grade Weekly Update This week the students are busy preparing a “museum” of their ancient civilization. Each class will be teaching their peers about either the Incas, Aztecs or Mayans. We are looking for-ward to their presentations, artifacts and other ideas to communicate the civilizations from South America. In Science, the students will be putting on their “architectural hats”! They were given a challenge to design the lighting system for a kitchen that is eco-friendly AND performs the correct task, of lighting a kitchen properly. The students learned about accent, ambient and
task lighting as well as how much energy differ-ent bulbs use and the light they emit. Each groups was given a dollar amount to stay under which incorporates math into their project. Learning about author’s point of view was a main concept in ELA this week. The students learned that different authors may have different opin-ions on the same topic. The students are also in the midst of writing narratives which will include dialogue. They learned the rules for dialogue and will incorporate those into their final writing piece.

PE UPDATE
Students finished up this week with their Jump Rope for Heart activities for increasing Cardio-vascular Endurance for fitness. I am very proud of the effort and drive of students showed for increasing their fitness levels during the month of February and their awareness on eating a little more healthy. Reminder that all Jump Rope for Heart money and Fitness Calendars are due by March 4th so I can get the students rewards to them before Spring Break. Students will be starting a week of Yoga and Fitness testing (Ohio State Physical Fitness Testing) 2/29 - 3/04.
DESIGN/ART
All log entries are on their way to The Ohio State University Extension in Painesville. Great work done by all! This week all students planned and designed personalized scratch art. Many students chose to bring it home to share. Some students opted to place it in their portfolio.
Ask your child to explain the scratch process and the unusual way of sealing their work. Ask them what type of stylus they used to create their art work.
FAB LAB We are wrapping up the fifth grade project. There are 28 puzzles left to cut on our Epilog He-lix. Have you tried putting your child’s puzzle together?
